ok,

i put up a mix set of the 'riverrun remix' already
in Post your mixes, music, etc here...


anyways, a few more developments..

just got a new turntable:

the ION ittUSB

shortCircuit City)...

anyways, its a (cheesy looking) decent turntable,
that has USB capabilities..it also has line/phono outputs,
and an input jack.. it comes with the free software
audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ )

i dont' have a stereo yet, so i wanted something
with a pre-amp...i looked at audio-technica, and
some other ones..but i decided to try out the usb feature
on this..

anyways, the turntable required a few steps to install,
the platter, the belt, the needle, and then it had to be
balanced etc..so after an hour of putting it together,
that part was done..

my new computer had VISTA on it..and audacity supports
that....i tweaked some of the sound settings, and got it
to support outputting the sound as the record...and
then i was good to go...

i tested the recording levels, and was good to go..


riverrun on vinyl

i had already ordered all 5 records previously (along
with a whole bunch of other stuff new order 12x12,
future retro, etc)... so i had those ready to go..

i started digitizing each of the non-cd mixes,
and the riverrun versions...

yes it was good to hear those in a non-mp3 format
finally...

some of the are actully different from the mp3 versions
(due to mixing, etc)...vanilla monkey sounds very
different....


i will be making a couple of things from these..

- maybe something like a misterions mix 2?
- another mixed set..

it looks like the titles are slightly different from
what i had previously listed in my uwmk3 listing..

also, there appears to be only one:
vanilla monkey mix by martinez - the hungry ghost one,
i thought there were two, but the second one was a
rip from a dj set, and it had faster bpms...

anyways, i'll post more later when i get finished..

by the way,
whoever mastered these records did a great job,
there's very little clipping, and the levels are well defined.

most of the other vinyl i've been sampling clips a lot, and
is very poorly mastered..

i enjoyed your Lemonworld mix from a while ago but thought that suffered greatly from sound quality issues. any chance you can make that mix in a higher quality?

that will require a lot of work..
i need to go back and fix a lot of glitches in those..
which is very time consuming..

also, the originals weren't that great to begin
with, so i'm limited by the bitrate that were at..

done,
i've gone back, and re-editted the lemonworld
tracks..

there were a lot of pops/clicks/skips in some
of the tracks, especially 'shouttwice'..in general
its cleaned up...

now as far as the quality goes, there were 2 original
tracks in 256k, and the rest were 192k, so the
final result is 192kbps...

i'm going through one more soundcheck, with
headphones, and i should be posting
lemon jam v1.1 tomorrow..

hey uw'ers,
i've had time to go back
and redo this mix,
looking back, the original
had some glitches in a few
of the tracks, skipped beats,
missing bars etc..

these were in the original files,
so i really didn't notice them too much..
however, after listening closely,
and a few requests to go back
and fix them, i did so..


there are some noticeable differences
especially in 'shouttwice', which had
several glitches and missed beats,
these have all been fixed..

i've also gone back through each
track, and removed all pops, clicks
and skips...overall it should sound
a lot better..

in my original release, the files
were split (across mp3, and shn)..
however, i'm just going to put
out 1 file as an mp3 (for now)...

as far as the quality goes, 2 of
the original files were 256kbps
and the rest are 192kbps..after
converting to wave files for
editting, i've reencoded them
back down to 192kbps, so they
area all at least the same
quality they started from..

the overall mix is only 51 minutes
long, but the quality is decent,
and there are lots of different
styles of music represented..


all the tracks were originally
available to download for free
from underworldlive.com as
unmixed tracks...

i really like this mix, and
hope you enjoy revisting it,
or if you've never heard them
before...

This is the shit thing about CDs these days:

Although CDs have a wider dynamic range, mastering houses are often encouraged to compress the audio on CDs to make it as loud as possible: It's the so-called loudness war. Since the audio on vinyl can't be compressed to such extremes, records generally offer a more nuanced sound.

Theres a thread on the hydrogenaudio forums that lists CDs that have been mastered overly loud and have lots of clipping. The Depeche Mode album Playing The Angel was one of those. Before Oink's demise I requested a FLAC rip from the vinyl and it sounds far better.

interesting. i like "playing the angel" as an album, but i find the sound quality of it almost impossible to listen to at times. it definitely has an overmodulated, clipped sound. it never occurred to me that it was an artifact of the mastering process rather than a creative decision to err on the side of "grittiness."

too bad about oink. i would love to hear the vinyl version of the album to see if the clippy sound i find offensive is reduced.

This is crap. You get nothing by just looking at waveforms. His wannabe scientific method is completely invalid. A waveform alone can not give information about the dynamic range.
I hate the loudness war myself, but this is just wrong.

i agree that you can't learn a lot from simply looking at the waveforms. for example, it tells you nothing of the signal in relation to the noise floor. in which case the smaller waveform could be the inferior one.

however the methodology isn't completley invalid. this image tells the story. the squared off tips of the peaks means clipping, pure and simple. a non-clipped signal doesn't square off.

so in this case, the point is valid. but you're right, you can't make a purist argument against louder mastering simply by comparing the size of waveforms alone.

this thread is pretty much off-topic at this point so i figured i'd go ahead and include this here:

after several critical comparisons between the CD and vinyl of "playing the angel," i've come to a few realizations:

yes, the vinyl transfer is different. the mix is more subtle, the stereo field a little more balanced and precise. there's a banging-your-head-against-the-desk feeling to the depth of field on the CD version where everything is jockeying to be at the front of the line. very shallow. the depth of field on the vinyl version is, for lack of a better word, deeper. elements recede and prioritize themselves in a much more pleasing way. i think "damaged people" is the most outstanding example of these differences.

that being said, a lot of the gritty distortion and clipping is still apparent on the vinyl version. it is by no means a clip-free transfer. you can definitely hear where it's worse on the CD, like the outtro to "nothing's impossible" (the farty sounding bass on the CD version is fart-less on the vinyl version) but there's still a lot of nasty sounding grit on the vinyl transfer. there are clips on martin's backup vocal in the chorus of "nothing's impossible" that are audible and identical in both versions. and the chorus of "john the revelator" is equally harsh on the ear on both versions.

it sounds to me the clipping wasn't necessarily all in the CD mastering process, which is what the debate seems to be about. i feel like i'm hearing clipping that goes back to the layback of the original master. whatever they sent on to the mastering house already had some pretty bad distortion on it (some intentional, i feel, and some not). the CD mastering process exacerbated the problem by compressing the hell out of the final product and cramming every element into your ear at the same damn loudness. it's like putting spotty, blemished skin beneath a magnifying glass. the vinyl, on the other hand, acts like a soft vaselined lens, making the blemishes sound smoother and less noticable.

but the blemishes are still there.

Love this mix. It's been sitting nicely besides holden's/AViD's Born Slippy megamix on my mobile music-listening device for these last years. It got me into the new UW stuff of the time.
