Are you serious? Where did you find this out?

That sounds like an awesome idea if true! I'm seriously excited about this.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

Wow, I didn't know that! I pre-ordered the disc version to get a physical copy.

That is absolutely amazing. Good on them for trying out things like this.

Edit: And it's definitely true that you pay whatever you like for the download. When you go to checkout after purchasing the download option, it asks you to enter in whatever price you like.

what's it sound like? any clips?
is it OK Computer-ish or Kid-A-ish? cos i never want to hear Kid A in my life ever again. but OK Computer was amazing.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

I think the amount I'm willing to pay is proportional to the bitrate/format of the music. Hopefully Radiohead have their stuff together and it will be at least 192 kbps CBR mp3?

I pre-ordered the download and paid them a lot more for the record than I would have ever given a record company coz they're a fuckin' global treasure this band. I'm really touched with this whole announcement and I'm really curious to see how things go for the "pay what you want" experiment.

not cheap but you get the vinyl and the CD (x 2) and the downloads, its a bumper bundle....plus a booklet and hard case

and its limited to the number bought, as its made to order

seems like a good deal to me....

Anyone knows if the Disc Box is limited, I would like to get the 12" and CDs but I don't really want to spend the money right now...

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

Wow! This was a surprise...well, not the new record, as the band have been hinting and teasing for years. I'd heard some of the work-in-progress songs live and they sounded like a nice return to rock form, following on HTTT. The surprise that suddenly it's here and you can "pay what you want" for download...that is a nice gesture. i hope people take it seriously...it is new Radiohead, after all..but i guess any money paid is better than the no money they'd receive if it was downloaded unofficially.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

this is so friggin conflicting.
i want to give them the bundle of cash they clearly deserve for doing something this cool, but i'm not interested in digitally owning an album. i never was. i like to hold things. i like to buy cds i like.
this whole $81 deal though is a *bit* asinine, then, as i have no use for the vinyl whatsoever (and thats shipping i also wouldnt have to pay), and i would rather not hold my cds in a slip case.

on the other hand, this is just cool as crap.

I'm with you, man. I'd much rather take care of a pretty CD and look at the artwork than worry about losing thousands of mp3s if the computer crashes. But seems we are in the minority these days. :o

Yeah I am not into digital music at all, I spend more money than ever, I like to have all the artwork associated with the music in my hands, i love vinyl though, specially as the artwork is always better on vinyl. :D

oh god i know. i remember before we started buying CDs and never looked back we'd have everything on vinyl and it'd all be huge slabs of artwork, it's a much preferable way of looking at and holding things but as far as equipment and storage and practicality i just need CDs. it's too late for me to really get into vinyl anymore and the player i have is so old...

also, i'm really quite broke and the thought of spending 80 bucks on a package, half of which i wont need, is quite off putting.

i just want the cd dammit

I have little to no CDs or vinyl remaining in my collection. I am an enthusiastic supporter of a removable media free future. I've certainly enjoyed album artwork throughout the years but I've got no problem with expunging that relationship at this point - not just because of the convienience but also because I sort of also associate this sort of thing with institutionalized record industry practices and well, good riddance to that shit. :)

So I probably won't be purchasing the hard copy but it definitely looks neeto.

Scott,
So you burned all your N.O.? Amazing. What about all that talk about amazing artwork on the 80's thread?

I for one defintely want to purchase one, but the frickin servers aren't responding... quite annoying.

I've still got all my New Order vinyl but that's it. I don't own anything else from any other artist. :)

it's coming out on regular boring old cd too early next year.

The thing is I will actually miss record labels too if they go away, not the big corporate ones obviously but all those labels out there that specialize and promote a certain kind of music, those labels that have an agenda. There are still labels out there that when they release something it is recommendation for me and I usually feel I have to give it a listen at least. Eventually all labels of this kind go to shit but new ones appear...

In any case I like the people that do this stuff and the work that goes behind it, and I find that it is a better way to discover music than a soulseek group or something where there is so much garbage...

Not really feeling the album title "In Rainbows". Sounds like trying too hard to be lighthearted after the last 2-3 albums, wherein Radiohead were in danger of disappearing up their own, well, where there's no sunshine for rainbows.

What if its all a big hack/hoax/whatever and you end up with a package of dead pigeons in december.

That'd be weak.

So far this is, in my opinion, the best thing they've done since 'O.K. Computer'. I'm not saying it's in the same universe as that record but the beautiful stripped down melodies on this one are pretty special.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

I'm absolutely loving this. Reckoner is a phenomenal track. So are Nude and 15 Step.. I'm having trouble picking a favourite actually. Still struggling to come to terms with that whole "holy shit it's a new Radiohead album" feeling.

Scott Warner 10-10-2007 01:37 AM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

Yeah, the only sore spot is they almost demolished "Videotape". All the live versions of this track suggested that it was going to be one of the most beautiful things they've ever done and they had to go and mess around with it.

But, all is redeemed for "Reckoner" - which doesn't resemble the original live version I heard at all and all the better for it! haha

dubman 10-10-2007 01:39 AM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

i;m not sure whats happening. i sort of casually paid them about $8 for it earlier today, and i'm sort of casually listening to it now at 2am, and i'm not reacting at all. it's clearly good, i just dont know if i'm genuinely lacking a response or if i just need more time.

what am i talking about, i'm only halfway through the album so far.

Yes. That was my first reaction too. I'm not sure what i think about Videotape yet. I know when i finished the record it was as if it wasn't complete. I'm wondering what I'll think when disc two is delivered to my door....

Wow, considering how upset we got when we found that the Riverrun was 192 CBR, I can't imagine what the Radiohead community's reaction to this is. I was planning on throwing in 5 or 10 bucks but 160 kbps seems like a slap in the face, and unfortunately to me it's pretty noticeable. Great songs though!

I agree, I'm upset but I love the idea so I went ahead and bought the digital release. If a single CD comes out I'll probably get that as well :(

joethelion 10-10-2007 12:26 PM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

I get the feeling that it's only in 160kbps b/c well - you're essentially just getting the promotional release of the album.

So it's like - "well, normally we wouldn't get any money whatso ever out of this deal... so why not just see how much people will offer; instead of just downloading it off of some website, etc"

It's really hard to think of it objectively, just b/c of how sudden & new this whole release is, but I would be definitely willing to say that it's at least a better album than HTTT

while I do miss some of the piano in "All I Need" [check their concert in San Diego not too long ago], I'd say that all the tracks that were debuted live have improved on the album

and it's good to FINALLY have "Nude" (aka "Big Ideas")
I think, that to not release it by this point would - basically be kind of insulting, as it's been played live since like... '97? (or was it '96?)

speaking of which... what's the longest it's taken RH to release a track? Like from between it was played live, to when it came out on album?

for example (other than Nude)
Life in a Glass House was played by Thom on acoustic guitar back in 96-ish. From what I remember, the lyrics didn't change around too much and the melody was kept intact

or

how pretty much all of Amnesiac was played live back before the release of Kid A

or how "I Will" dates back to the early 90's doesn't it?

...and apparently "Myxomatosis" was from Kid A
