Re: The Orb - The Dream
hmm... sounds interesting
but I hope that the 'okie dokie' vibe isn't completely lost, I really liked some of those more ambient portions and what's "LPO" ? |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
If I was, like, a little girl. I would be, like, singing and skipping in a new yellow dress with pony tails and bow ties.( and you know, like wasn't bald).

Re: The Orb - The Dream
I have listened to this twice and have to say, I have to get used to the humour thing. Not much into it yet. There's Dub all over this though, hmmmm

LPO= Le Petit Orb
Patterson & Fehlmann will play gigs as LPO. The few clips I've heard from the album did not impress me or make me want to buy it. I know it's not fair to judge the album on just those short clips, so looking forward to giving the whole album a proper listen. |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
Definetely surprised me to see an Orb album with so many tracks. It's good, better than Cydonia and Bikes & Trikes anyway. So far it's been a little hard to get used to the lack of any real theme, and a few of the vocals caught me off guard, but I agree that this is a lot closer to their Ultraworld sound. I don't think it's quite as good as Okie Dokie was, but then again I really loved that album, and I guess in the meantime there's all of Thomas Fehlmann's solo work. Speaking of which, is Fehlmann on this one?

Re: The Orb - The Dream
the problem with the Orb is Alex Patterson. if the Orb was just Fehlmann, they'd be much better. whether it's true or not, i hold Patterson responsible for the cheesy vocals and shit attempts at humor. 75% of this record is classic Orb material. maybe there's a version of it somewhere that dispenses with the shitty, cheesy vocals and just focuses on the dub heavy ambience.
seeing Fehlmann live on October 3. i'll ask him if he's ever put off by Dr. LX's sense of humor. |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
it's shit. really shit.
awaiting uforb reissue with bonus cd. |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
Just to stoke up the fires... I missed this coming out and have just been listening since yesterday.
It's brilliant... I used to love the orb but they drifted outta my life... the latter albums not having much connection with me... but this one hits the spot entirely. get it and decide for yourselves :) |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
Yet again, this one follows my 'rule of the Orb', which is that no matter which genre they are leaning towards, for any given Orb album, there will be exactly 2 tracks that I really like, and all the rest will leave me fairly cold. This time round it's "Vuja De" and "Katskills". Odd.

Re: The Orb - The Dream
i love the song "lost and found" on this albumn. super catchy or whatever...
|
Re: The Orb - The Dream
Except for maybe two songs, I really love the album. To me, it's the most Orb-y they've been since Cydonia at least. And while I enjoyed Okie Dokie and B&T, I feel The Dream is more eclectic sounding. It's nice to have Youth back as well.

That's exactly what had me most excited about this go round. |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
youth's just a workshy layabout who blows smoke into the mixing desks cos he thinks it adds something to the tracks. whereas fehlmann is a genius.

Re: The Orb - The Dream
this is by far the best ORB album for a long time...
very similar to UFOrb imo... this is how all orb albums should sound, dubby ambient, and full of weird vocal samples like days of old... people still listen to good shit like this.... |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
Upon listening a few more times, I can dig it. It is certainly one of the best-SOUNDING albums I've ever heard. Just fantastic production here. A little more reliant on vocal samples, most of the tunes have some sung phrase in them, but yeah this is a lot closer to their first two albums - this could have followed U.F. Orb.
Me? I'm still waiting on another Orbus Terrarum (I think I will be waiting a long time) |

And I feel you're right about the need to have other people keep Alex focused. I don't think Orb could exist without Alex, but I also feel he can't do it on his own. Supposedly, he's very tempermental (and he's had temper tantrums at two shows I have seen...the worst one was with Felhmann, who seems like a really sweet guy, so it was kind of uncomfortable to watch). |

anyway, lx has a lot of influence on the orb's albums, but musically he doesn't do a lot....i mean, thrash left when lx was playing a simple sine wave through an amp....to my knowlegde, the only actual musical things that lx has done on orb albums is the (dissonant) piano on oxbow lakes. he is good at samples though. story about little fluffy clouds - lx gave kris a bunch of samples and told them to put them together...electric counterpoint (which lx didn't realise was in 3/4 time anyway), the rickie lee jones sample, the drums (whose origins i'm not allowed to say), and the engineer banged out the track. you never wondered why youth's solo material sounds so much like this album? or why fehlmann's solo material sounds so much like oakie dokie? etc. |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
there's never been any confusion in my mind who the musicical masterminds were.
alex is repsonsible for the cheesy samples and that's about all i give him credit for. |

btw for those interested in the actual physical release of The Dream, it's coming out on Feb 18, 2008 in the UK. cheaper than the Japanese version. Amazon.com lists Jan 29 as another release, but from the price it looks like some Euro import (possibly the UK release with the wrong date). also does Noise, Rhythm And Gardening = NRG? |
Re: The Orb - The Dream
yeah, there's a uk bonus track too, different from the japanese bonus track.
