The New Order / Factory Thread
i know new order are basically dead... and well we know about Tony H, but their memory lives on for sure...
i'm sure we had an official thread for NO but I couldn't find one, so i've started this one... what with 'Control' coming out imminently... Anyway, most pressing news is tonight's show on BBC4 for those in teh UK who have satellite or those who can access it via the interweb http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/factory/ its a full documentary about Factory Records if its on the beeb (and esepcially BBC4) it is likely to be very good get there - if you love everything N'Order / Factory obviously post here any other related comments or New Order / JD related snippets cheers Matt |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
What do you want from me?
MONACO TO REFORM IN OCTOBER Monaco will reform for one gig on October 28, which is a charity gig for Oxfam. It's called the Oxjam Music Festival. The gig will be at the Manchester Ritz. The lineup is still to be confirmed. More info can be found on the official website: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved...xjam/index.php |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
Mmmm... yeah, the Factory/NewOrder/Peter Saville/Joy Division/Rob Gretton/Tony Wilson/etc. creative force were easily the most formative thing present in my childhood. Until the early 90's there was little else I paid attention to other than girls.
I mean just take one New Order 12". Let's say, "Fine Time". The WHOLE OBJECT is a carefully constructed work of art. The cover. The high quality inner sleeve. The hidden inscriptions on the inner side of the vinyl. The enigmatic "no name, no marketing" policy still in full-effect. And then the MUSIC: 909s, 303s, the acid house experience mutated and filtered through the New Order perspective all culminating in a big fuck off ending like all of their classic records during the 80s. I don't expect most people to really understand but for me it's still untouchable stuff. luvluvluluvv |

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
has anyone bought this?
Factory Records Graphic Album I keep meaning to pick it up... and I'd totally agree with Scott about the "whole object" being a piece of art... I've even bought 12"-es of New Order's where I didn't really even like the song, or I already had the tracks on the vinyl -> just b/c of the cover |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
i bought it in hardcover and softcover :D
worth every penny. |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
so - do you get nice full-page presentations of the album covers?
or is it like most of the books/magazines about album covers - where the majority of the images are scaled down tiny? |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
loads and loads of full page stuff. it's truly beautiful. i recommend the Hardcover. worth the extra money. i bought the softcover so i could cut out some images for framing, it's that nice!
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
ok good... I've had it in my 'wish list' (or whatever) on like amazon for aaaages b/c I could never actually see what it looked like on the inside
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
definitely buy it
its one of my fav books :) factory records were something that will never be bettered, their whole ethos, and management sadly have died with one man... long live factory |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
anthony wilson's son talking to new order members to reform for tony wilson concert. they are all positive. so lets see what will happen? they're astonishing live when they hate each other. :)
i listened new order tracks from control soundtrack. they're all cute instrumentals in salvation soundtrack style, dont expect new songs anyway. reading bernard sumner biography "confusion". recommended. |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
the docu on bbc 4 friday night was quality................new order talking about factory ploughing their royalties into the hac was a particular highlight :D that and Tony Wilson saying 'when the hac first opened, we opened it every night, we sort of viewed it as a public service'
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
I never heard any New Order, what would be a good place to start? The only thing I've listened to by them was Joy Divison's Closer album, and besides "Isolation" I didn't really like it too much (although I can see how others would).

http://www.discogs.com/release/543435 personally, i and many others think Technique is the best album, but all the hits are on 'singles' and probably in their simplest form - in their original single format its the best place to start, there have been loads of compilations substance, international, retro... all are worth checking because they showcase the bands entire career.... JD is a bit harsher... and probably worth going back to if you enjoy the stuff mentioned above... have fun... i listen to New Order more than Underworld, but don't tell anyone.... |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
I was introduced with them via Substance, a 2 disc singles collection released in 1987. I would either go with that or 'International', which is a modern best-of. Note that Substance was done before 'Technique', which as already mentioned is very good.

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
"power, corruption & lies" album and famously non-album singles around -1981-1983 era could be a good introduction. everything is in art state.

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
I'd say either get "Substance" (which was my first NO purchase), which collects most/all of their 12" singles & some bsides
unfortunately - the release only goes up through 1987, so you might want to get "Singles" which collects all of their 7" singles |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
Substance is probably the best start.

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
yah, good call that, just need to be the completeist and get that box. it's phenominal...
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
loads of overlap from Heart and Soul box set, however, the sources for the live songs have been improved and remastered in what is supposed to be the cleanest copies yet. they're still not great but apparently they sound better than the live versions on Heart and Soul.

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
bbc 4 documentary.
very good quality. http://www.purelivegigs.com/forums/s...hlight=factory i think its the most complete factory documentary. with amazing period material. late 60s, early/late 70s footage. |

steven morris, as listed above! btw, gillian and steve's remix of NIN should be out very soon. hooky's band, Freebass, now has Liam Gallagher, Tim Burgess, Ian McCullogh and some other Manc/Northern singers doing vocals. |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
DOH! guess that's what happens when you SKIM. thanks.
Freebass sounds like Yardbirds2007! haahah |

looks like there will be no remaster anytime soon... i'd like to hear whats left from sirens though.. |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
wait... wasn't it Bernard that always said that JD sounded better live, which is why the live discs were included on the new JD reissues?
...then why would he not want to release live NO recordings... |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
I'm really glad Peter Hook got reduced to a burping and farting machine in 'Control'.
Sumner should dislike their (New Order, not Joy Division... JD stuff is pretty good) live past because it's peppered with drunk and half assed performances. Perhaps Hook thinks they were Led Zeppelin up there but every time I saw them Sumner was forgetting what to sing and shouting at the sound engineer to "sort it out you fucking twat". * * Hollywood Bowl, Summer 1993 |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
i'm a huge fan of j.d and n.o on record and saw j.d once and n.o countless times.while seeing n.o was always an "event" for me and my mates the band were more times than not a huge let down.bernie was nearly alway drunk or in a bad mood and the gigs would often come close to falling apart.i've meet the band socially on a few occasions and can also say that bernie is one of the moodiest mancs i've ever come across and i've been to the pub with mark.e.smith !
|
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
the 93 US tour is notorious. Bernard is the moody one who more often than not, holds full responsibility for their live shortcomings.
these outbursts and mood swings are all part of what endears New Order to me. i love the band for what they are and what they've accomplished. now, Jose M, care to give us any details about that JD show you saw? did you see Control and what was your opinion of how Corbijn captured Manc in the late 70s and the band in general? |
Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
yes, i've never met anyone who's attended a JD show... know many who could have but didn't and well i've never met you either for that matter! :)

Re: The New Order / Factory Thread
i saw them at brunel uni in 1978.it was a local gig for me and all the punk bands played there at the time.even saw the sex pistols there !
can't recall that much about it now but i remember not being impressed by their dress sense and peter hook had a fucking beard ! |
