NUXX always played live since '96?
Hey all,
I know there's an ongoing effort to catalog the live performances of Underworld (thanks to those involved)... But as i sat sorting CDs this weekend (unpacking from a move!), i realized just how many UW shows have been recorded, and it seems to me, NUXX has been played at virtually all of them since this song became a hit. I realize that the 2003 version was an effort to revitalize the song, but save the piano outtro, the live version is still remarkably the same as it always was. Has there ever been a show since circa 1996 anyone can recall where Born Slippy.NUXX was not performed? Interestingly, a recent Chemical Brothers concert i heard did NOT include "Block Rockin' beats", likely their biggest hit, which surprises me. Do you think ther will ever be a time when UW stops playng NUXX? Not that i'm complaining...the song is still amazing and stirs the crows to a frenzy. Just wondering! :o |
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
i think that this snippet from an interview back in 2002 sums up underworld's position on this subject (link to interview = http://music.barnesandnoble.com/feat...D=344817&z=y):
B&N.com: Do you ever get sick of playing "Born Slippy"? RS: No! There was a period three or four years ago when I was sick of it, and Karl said, If you went to see James Brown, you'd want him to do "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" -- how would you feel if he didn't do it? Because we jam, it becomes a thing to be manipulated and fooled with, and it changes every night enough to keep us happy. When you see 40,000 people go completely mental as you drop a chord in, it's hard not to just think, This is great! Whatever you're feeling about it as a piece of art, it's incredibly satisfying. my guess? odds are you'll be hearing it at every underworld show ;) |
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
and at least the vocal has been kicking around since those early '94 shows
|
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
it's interesting though that for a while they always morphed into the 2003 version when playing Nuxx live, but now they seem to play the "classic" version again (at least they did at Wild In The Country).

Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
Blue Mountain wasn't a radio broadcast
I think it was more like a 'dress rehearsal' done either at the same time, or around the time of the making of the "Push Upstairs" video |

In theatrical terms it would be what's referred to as a "dry run".

Came across this: http://dancemusic.about.com/cs/inter...derworld_4.htm " “Push Upstairs,” that was made by Graham Wood, you know, one of our long-time collaborators at Tomato, who has done most of the videos that Underworld’s put out. And at that point we’d become kind of bankable and programmable by music television, so he had pressure on him to make something that was television-friendly, you know, that had a look, and yet retained some integrity. So we spoke about it and what we wanted to do is we wanted to be filmed playing live in the landscape, you know, so we thought let’s go to Scotland and do it up in the mountains, and we’d take cameras up there and we’d take a mobile recording studio and we’d build a stage up there and we’d do a gig, and that would be part of the show and then we’d use the recordings for something else. And everyone said that’s ridiculous, in Scotland it’s going to be raining, it’s going to be wet, everyone’s going to be sodden, you know, and then this possibility to do the Big Day Out Tour in Australia came up and so we said fantastic, OK, let’s go down there a bit early, we’ll film it in Australia, no problem, the weather’s going to be fantastic, scenery for miles. Graham Wood went down there, found this spot up in the Blue Mountains, where on the edge on the edge of this cliff, we’d build the stage on the edge of this cliff and we’d play to hundreds of miles of beautiful landscape. Well, we woke up in the morning and it was pouring down with rain, and it was a cloudy day and you couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of your face, and basically it was Scotland with Gum trees. And I have these DV films of Graham Wood in this poncho, stood on the end of this cliff looking out into the abyss, and you know, you can see, do I jump or do I try and pull this one out the bag? And I think he did a fantastic job, needless to say if it had been a sunny day, we would have been fried to a crisp." The Big Day Out they are talking about was in January 1999, so Blue Monutain is from around that time. |
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
thanks for that quote - I didn't want to say anything was definite, b/c there's always a chance I could've remembered it somewhat incorrectly
but yea - that's where the Blue Mountain gig is from the "recordings for something else" = Blue Mountain gig, which originally was only available as individual streaming-audio files - so you had to check back after a day or two to see if anything new came up [this was the early UW live page, so when the 365 couches first started] |
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
whew...here in Ontario Canada, we also have ' Blue Mountain " and i would have slayed small dogs in half if i found out i missed that. :p

Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
Speaking of the Blue Mountain gig...
Is track 5 entitled "Cappe Pfuno"? It bears a lot of resemblance to "Please Help Me," from the Push Upstairs EP, but the ending at Blue Mountain is completely different. Should it be called "Please Help Me/Cappe Pfuno"? I'm confused. |

Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
To answer your question, it is "Please Help Me/Cappe Ffuno"
|
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
yea - it's basically the two songs together as one track
and Cappe Pfuno was never released officially. It only showed up as a part of the Blue Mountain download and as an improv here and there |

Cappe Pfuno is the bit at the end, I'm assuming. :) |
Re: NUXX always played live since '96?
Pretty sure it's Ffuno, not Pfuno.

What about the Luxemburg gig in 2005? I remember from the bootleg that they played the original Born Slippy instead (?) of NUXX.
