2007 so far

Album faves:

'Future Rock' by Strategy
'Yearbook 1' by Studio
'Andorra' by Caribou
'Sound of Silver' by LCD Soundsystem
'Journeyman's Annual' by Deadbeat

Fairly dub heavy but hey, dub always rules.

Track faves:

"Running on Empty" by Strategy
"Stop Spinning" by Strategy
"Self Service" by Studio
"Feuervogel" by Solomun/Stimming
"Glamourous" by Fergie

Funny story about the Fergie track: I once considered buying the rims from the very Mustang Fergie sings about in that song

BrotherLovesDub 06-25-2007 09:41 AM

Re: 2007 so far

i love the beats on the Deadbeat but that vocalist is fucking awful. i was hoping for a more dancehall/techno hybrid after seeing Deadbeat live a few times in the last couple years. his live sets rule and that is reflected in the music on the new one, however that vocalist is horrible. oh well. thankfully there are dub versions right after the vocal versions. still a waste of 4 or 5 songs on the lp.

that Strategy got a huge write up in the new XLR8R. their last was good, not heard this one yet.

my favs.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Aril Brikha - Ex Machina
Tracey Thorn - Out of the Woods
Thomas Fehlmann - Honigpure
Pantha Du Prince - This Bliss
Efdemin - Efdemin
Bjorn Torske - Feil Knapp
Lindstrom+Prins Thomas - Reinterpretations
Black Devil Disco Club - In Dub
Joris Vorn - From A Deep Place
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
Noze - How To Dance

it's been a great year for techno!

Chemical Brothers - We Are The Night (patchy)
Bebel Gilberto - Memento
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (production is awful)

Not an album but worth mentioning:
Jori Hulkkonen - Katajanukke EP (bleeptastic - new album out soon)

Is the whole album by Strategy as good as Running On Empty? That song is beautiful.

I think so. "Stop Spinning" is just as beautiful in an entirely different way. Towards the end the album gets a little unfocused by the first 40 minutes of it are grand.

I never thought it was a bad record. It's really good. I just think 'Up in Flames' is a very special album.

sometimes buying an album makes you want to listen to it more

patrick 06-25-2007 08:45 PM

Re: 2007 so far

agreed... when you own the albumn you give it the attention it deserves and often also listen to it in one go rather than mixed in between other albumns or with single tracks...

i can't even think of my top ten right now... i've actually got a lot of stuff from the past and that has been mixed in with the new stuff and confused things in a lot of ways

well not impossible and i'd probably take more missteps that would make me less willing to just pick up stuff surely. i dont know if i would have found half the stuff that i love if i hadn't
i mean i know where you're coming from with the downloading thing. it's not as evil as early leaks but it's a shitty way to go about amassing GB after GB of music, especially since it's so easy to lose control and forget what you have on it and youre just... collecting. i try not to, and i dont mostly. i'll delete an album if it just hasn't gotten to me and i keep my HD under 20GB, but then again, i like a LOT of stuff. i'm told i can't discern and that 3/4 of the albums i bother to listen to i like in some way, so it's easy to find something really great that i want to get and the only way to keep listening to it more often than not is to hook up some cables to my laptop.

it's just frustrating sometimes, is all

Overall the album is weird but just because of Adler (that is the best to ride bike by the way) i think this album is great :).. I really like the vocal intros too. So far so good. I have to listen to it more? MORE?

this year its finally happened, life has caught up with the frankly excessive amounts of cash i used to spend on new releases and family responibilities have taken over so i've hardly bought anything. only really heard what friends have hooked me up with........anyway this year i've loved

Bloc Party - a weekend in the city. quality lyrics, and although some of the production does my head in and affects the songs i really identify with a lot of the themes in this record.

Black rebel motorcycle club - Baby 81. Combines the songwriting skills they showed on thier last stripped down effort Howl, with the noisy guitar sound that they come out with. couple of these tracks and real anthems and i'm surprised its not blown up

saafi brothers - supernatural
and another vote for Aril Brikha - Ex Machina

Slippery slope, mate... ;)

It was 2002 when I realised that I had only bought 2 CDs all year and both of those were compils. That was when I knew I had to do something about it, or give up entirely and start doing macrame instead.

This year oive mos'ly been liking:

Justice - (Cross) .... can't be bothered to find the symbol :p
Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release
Orbital - Glasto 1994-2004

I'm digging the new Interpol, sounding more like TOTBL than Antics. No real improve but still solid IMO. No one else about this ?
