it was extremely close between the top 3 with burial leading most of the way until the last flurry of votes pushed junior boys to the the top

thanks to everyone for voting and i'm looking forward to checking out some of the albums on the list that i missed during the last 12 months...

UW & Yared OST on #4....right. it's ridiculous how biased some people are...oh well.... ;)

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

virtually all those albums deserve to be in front of breaking and entering. i mean, where's fennesz? mouse on mars? tim hecker at #43? lidell at #40? you lot should be ashamed of yourselves.

at least Burial got the edge :|

i should've put Ruff Sqwad at #1! then at least they'd grace the same list as Ben Folds.

i am suprised that working for a nuclear free city was so low. that was a kick ass albumn. the roots should have been higher too, although i didn't put it on my list too...

oh well

i think it was a pretty solid year though! i forgot some of the great stuff that come out though, i was confused when people said they didn't like the stuff that was coming out

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

weird.

trentemoller and liars should be reversed. gnarls barkley should be down about 30 places. william orbit and keane should be forbidden. isolee is a friggin compilation and he sucks anyhow.
breaking and entering was maybe in my top 30, as i just keep liking it more and more, but i didnt expect to see it at #4
move spank rock up and it should be a solid top ten, but the rest is kinda confusing.

Daedelus should be higher, IMO. Seriously folks, it's IDM goodness.

I'm rather surprised Junior Boys made it number one. I guess name recognition counts for something.

yes. exactly.

or maybe the blinkered people in the underworld part of the forum who will listen to anything over and over again with the words "smith/hyde" on it. shit, if "change the weather" had been reissued, they would have voted it for their #1.

(cmon, it's an UW forum, there's no way B&E wasn't gonna be in the top 10 if only through the fact that probably everyone has at least heard it)

it is what it is. So sorry that an averaging of multiple people's opinions doesn't match your own. There's no need to criticize what other folks considered their favorite music of the year. As it is, this is a nice cross-section of just what it is, other than UW, that dirties enjoy listening to and kudos to Matt for tallying!
The fact that "breaking & Entering" is up there certainly has to do with the hyper-exposure of that soundtrack around these parts. But it also is in the minds of many a lovely album. So quit yer whinin' and banishin', please. What's the world without surprises?

holden

p.s. and before this launches into the usual, "we're just discussing/debating" and "everyone's entitled to opinions" endless argument, let me repeat that this poll is what it is. These were voted on, and shouldn't be changed, regardless of if i feel slighted that my tops didn't rank high or get on.

Stephen 01-08-2007 08:54 AM

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

Fuck me there's some moaning going on. If you want to see a list of the 50 best albums of 2006 that you agree with 100%, then write it yourself.

Without any kind of weighting, this is always going to be skewed like this. I mean, I barely bought 10 new albums last year (I didn't vote either) but if I had voted it would basically have been everything that I'd bought (assuming I didn't buy any dogshit recordings by accident). Gnarls Barkley ended pretty high up so let's say for arguments sake that 15 people voted for St Elsewhere. Of that 15 maybe 3 thought it was excellent, the rest thought it was good/fun/whatever. Those 12 people then entered it into their top ten of 2006 alongside some albums they really REALLY loved. Someone could feasibly have included Gnarls and Trentemoller on their list, knowing full well that they enjoyed Trentemoller's offering infinitely more and yet, the 2 votes count exactly the same amount towards the final results.

bitching & moaning about lists = people love (talking about) music.

why is the "everyone's entitled to opinions" debate only welcome when it's positive opinions being expressed?

No, people are definitely entitled to their opinion, whatever it may be, it's just that it wouldn't hurt for people to recognise the limitations and nature of such a poll.

I only bought three albums off that list (Trentemoller, Technasia and Nathan Fake) I intend to pick up the Junior Boys and Burial offerings very soon though.

i agree completely about understanding the nature of this poll. i just wanted to re-emphasize that criticizing polls like this is fun, and should not be frowned upon! :D

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

i'm not exactly losing sleep over this poll. ;)
just i'd rather whoever voted for the u/w to look at this poll and listen to the rest of the top 20 eventually, just to appreciate the truely great music that has been released this year. if someone's voted for the u/w album, having listened to the rest of the top 20, i'll be astonished.

patrick 01-08-2007 11:00 AM

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

agreed... i do agree that it is suprising that it is out there in front... but remember that this is a compilation of polls, so it is is statistically not very significant in terms of: lots of people know uw here, and so many maybe put it on the end of their list... maybe only a few put bonobo on their list, but ranked higher...

which is the better albumn vs. which is more popular?

kid cue 01-08-2007 11:09 AM

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

i'd like to see the number of votes for each album on the list ... matt used to include this data in previous years' lists, if i'm not mistaken.

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

I assume the #1 picks are VERY heavily weighted as I am pretty sure I am the only one that voted for The Goslings. :D

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

I'm not sure about the weighting as my number 2 - Belong's October Language didn;t even rate. Nor did another 4 of my offerings, really surprised not to See Scott Walker or Joanna Newsome on there.

But otherwise it's been the same sort of list the past few years as has been the reactions.

myshkin 01-08-2007 02:33 PM

Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

As far as UW's album being so high, what the hell would anyone expect on an UW site? It's the one album of the year that virtually everyone on an UW forum will buy so on the basis of very simple mathematical probabilities, it cannot but end up so high. No offence but rather than slag off people who voted it so high, I'd question the working intellect of the person who finds such obvious logic beyond them.

people who appreciate a variety of music and have enough intellect to voice opinions on that. not just listen to one band or group.

Very presumptious of you, carpee... be careful, please, not to insult the intelligence or musical diversity of folks around here.
This remark is especially ponderous since that particular release is quite unlike what one expects from Underworld and exhibits a lot of sonic variety.

The point isn't about listening to one band. It's simply the inevitablity that on a forum dedicated to a particular artist, that artist is bound to finish very high up on a best of list, simply as a result of the mathematical probabilities. Also the best music can be quite difficult to even know about these days. I'd say be content to point people in interesting paths rather than get annoyed about them not listening to the particular musical treasures which you've been fortunate enough to have come across.

I've no interest in any pointless hostility, but the point I made is very obviously valid and a suitable response to a fairly aggressive initial post about those who voted UW so high. Not that I even voted in the poll in the first place. But anyway, I'm more interested in Carp's likes in music than any aggro so hopefully we don't have to wallow in this.
