Re: breaking and entering!!
Hello and welcome!
I never thought the film track was gonna be a banging selection of tracks. It shows a much calmer side to Underworld which i like. Not their fav work of theres that i own but i do like it. Its done to suit the film which ive seen snippets off and it does work well with the movie. |
Re: breaking and entering!!
I love it and think it's awesome. If I wasn't an Underworld fan and saw the film I probably would've bought the soundtrack regardless. Different strokes for different folks.
Edit: Also, welcome. :) |
Re: breaking and entering!!
its just you,i think you should try "transporter 2" i hear that they've got faithless and the dub pistols scoring it !;)
|
Re: breaking and entering!!
i like it, but its really only the mellow side of uw. its nice for what it is, but its certainly not for someone expecting to hear the typical uw sound.

Re: breaking and entering!!
welcome!
first and foremost, this is a soundtrack. it is also a collaboration with another artist. this is not the same thing as a guest musician. UW collaborated with Gabriel Yared to score for a film. below i've detailed my 5 step plan for enjoying this album: 1. purchase album* 2. contract the flu 3. roll and smoke spliff 4. take 1.5 doses of Nyquil 5. insert disc, press play this works. if this doesn't work, please send me a sample of your weed and i'll test it on my end. thanks. |
Re: breaking and entering!!
I think it's absolutely wonderful. Obviously if you were expecting banging underworld tunes you're gonna be dissapointed but it's a great piece of soothing, atmospheric "ambient" music.

Agreed. This is an album that gets into you slowly. Nice themes, repeated motifs, lots of small surprises. Karl's voice as a lovely instrument (a la "I'm a big sister..." tracks), great guitar bits, even some beats if you listen closely! First listen, i wasn't wowed, either...it sounded too minimal/unfinished. Give it some more spins while relaxed (maybe not drugged up on nyquil), and it'll start surprising you wirth lovely lil things. :) |
Re: breaking and entering!!
Hmmm listened again, at home this time chilled (not driving!),still boring, never really expected banging tunes but didnt expect sub 'boards of canada' like ambient twaddle either!!:(

Re: breaking and entering!!
It strikes me that this album lies more in the vien of clasical than it does electronic. This is the Yared influence obviously, but something I'm sure Underworld were very excited to do. I know it's not minimalism, but it still reminds me of Steve Reich or Phillip Glass.
I highly highly recommend Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians," both as a referrence for how classical music has affected electronic (Kraftwerk were strongly influenced by Reich) and as a stunningly beautiful piece of music. Maybe this would be a way into the album for people who aren't into it at the moment. |
Re: breaking and entering!!
i think its a film score and should be judged with the film really.to judge the music against a track written for someones artist album is a bit daft.this music was written to go with the images and emotions of the action on the screen.

Well yeah mmm skyscraper, that's pretty common.
Musicians usually have bits and bobs of music around them that don't seem appropriate for anything then suddenly (boom) they remember something they have that captures the feeling of whatever they apply it to. |
Re: breaking and entering!!
well in this case I think it was not like that, but rather the director had approached them about the project and they probably talked about what kind of film it was gonna be, what kind of feeling and atmosphere it was gonna have ... and then they started writing the music before the shooting had started. It was not like they already had this music lying about just waiting for the film to come along.

Re: breaking and entering!!
thanks for that!
Funny how the track that captured his attention the most was EssGee, a track which a lot of people here found to be the weakest on the album. |

Re: breaking and entering!!
i agree that Breaking and Entering is in the vein of Ess Gee, but it is much more than a harmless guitar doodle. It is multi-instrumental, orchestral, alteratively minimal and overlayered, quiet and percussive. it basically shows how much UW is capable of in addition to the banging electro-dance tracks that we all know and love.
As an aside, i don't understand the lumping of Ess Gee and Skym...theyr'e very different sorts of tracks. Ess Gee is just guitar, while skym is mostly keyboard. The fact that they are both beatless might warrant comparison, but Skym def. feels like a full "song", which builds and changes. Ess gee is just a nice lil noodle bit. If you're gonna include it with anything, here's the family: Ess Gee, Blueski, Shudder. Hmm, just thinking about that 5 least favorites list. i bet if there was a top ten downtempo/ambient tracks, some of those would appear as favorites ;) |

For example: the way DA3D follows Ess Gee on AHDO. And the very lovely combo on EE: the lovely calm outro of Push Upstairs, followed by the pounding beats of Pearl's Girl, followed by the mellow Jumbo, then Shudder and then King of Snake. |
Re: breaking and entering!!
Just wanted to say, that after listening to this score for a few weeks, that I really love what Rick, Karl, and Gabriel have done. Having not seen the film, the cd has become the score to my life this winter. Returning home to Chicago for thanksgiving, the themes of this score were constantly floating in my head as I walked/drove around the cold, winter landscape that I once called home. This really seems like winter music. I walked around the Chicago campus where I was a student just months ago with the "Hungerford Bridge" theme in my head, thinking of old friends and old memories left behind for the hustle of Los Angeles. I really love the textures and melodies (and lush soundscapes;)) in the score. Great job fellas.
