orbital
i hear a lot of y'all dig orbital, the last forum poll showed that the top 3 other favourite bands were Moby, Genesis, and Orbital. and i've never heard a song by them. what kind of music do they play? are they prog house like underworld? what album would you most recommend?
|
Re: orbital
What album to recommend? It depends of what you expect. There was and compilation called Work 92/02, so its easy to start with to remember the old tunes and get to the mood. But the real Orbital journey starts with non single pieces on the albums. I can say that for me is highlight the two first albums Yellow and Brown, thats the classic, must hear.
But maybe most interresting album is In Sides from circa 1997. Its my personal oppinion and many other fans will not agree with me. I liked the last Blue Album as well. Hope it helps;) |

Orbital 2--the Brown Album is AMAZING
|
Re: orbital
In Sides and the Brown Album are both absolutely essential, then Snivilisation. Don't bother with The Altogether. Both are definitely in the realm of techno, but, like Underworld, theres so much more going on than just pounding beats.
Overall, their sound is as broad as Underworld - their albums are all slightly different, there are lots of gems on hard to find EPs, and they have done soundtrack work as well, but speaking as someone that has everything they've released, the above should get you interested :) |
Re: orbital
halcyon.on.on.on.on.on.....
and belfast. and chime. and lush 3.1 + 3.2 + 3.3 and everything by them ever. |
Re: orbital
They've got so many amazing amazing amazing music.
In Sides is in my top 3 of favourite albums ever. The melodies on that are indescribably beautiful. Even the Green album (their first) has some great tunes on it. Belfast of course. Snivilisation starts with some beautiful tracks, although I loose interest in the second part. Just get everything they have released. |
Re: orbital
Orbital fucking rock i wish they hadnt called it a day, they were my first gig to which blew me away.Mmmmmmmm.
|
Re: orbital
Yeah, Orbital were class. And I'm very pleased that I got the chance to see them live.
|
Re: orbital
Bryantm3: please do a search on the forum before making posts like this. With a band like Orbital, its highly likely that there is already a thread or two dedicated to them. A search for the word "Orbital" returned 87 threads, one of which was "The Orbital Appreciation Thread" with over 900 views on it.
But no, this time im not gonna merge it  |
Re: orbital
We only allowed one thread per band a year or what? The last Orbital thread died a death in March or April, the one before that (the appreciation one) petered out in November of last year.
Give the youngsters a break! :p Snivilization is one of my fave albums ever. I also love the Blue Album too, which a lot of people didn't rate so highly. But yeah, anything by them is eminently listenable. :) |
Re: orbital
middle of nowhere!
|
Re: orbital
As said before if you haven't got anything by them yet get the Work (best of)
As for albums in-sides Brown Green Snivelisation Blue In that order |
Re: orbital
i don't typically go for 'best of' compilations because they don't really make any musical sense. i'll try in sides.
|
Re: orbital
in sides will get you going. diversions will help too. as will peel sessions.
find a live version of impact and get ready. but you have to remember that it was in the 90s. "music had changed" |

in sides is like as good as stiti. it's bloody brilliant. also: genesis is the top 3 other bands? HGUHKL? |
Re: orbital
second toughest in the infants is probably my least favourite underworld album. and yes, Genesis was in the top 3.
|
Re: orbital
And I would say Juanita most closely resembles Orbital's sound, without lyrics.

Re: orbital
hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
orbital sucked... they were a couple of bedroom dj's with a keyboard... i mean anyone can wear miner's lamps on their heads and nod to plinky plonky electronics... i'm glad they're gone, means more room for Underworld - the original electronica survivors... Orbital were bloodly lightweights like Leftfield who couldn't handle the pace ps. i love oribital... just listen to something by them... anything - you won't be disappointed |
Re: orbital
man, genesis!
terrible |
Re: orbital
well...
I kinda think Orbital were a bit over-rated. And, I definitely gave them more than a fair chance. I've bought: In-Sides, the Brown Album, the Blue album, the Alltogether (x2cd), Work, the Middle of Nowhere, their BTM mix, and I've even borrowed a copy of Snilivision honestly - the only album of theirs that I found to be really solid was "In-Sides". Other than that - I only ever seem to like maybe 2 or 3 tracks max per album but I will give them - those 2 or 3 tracks that I like, are usually extremely good. Like, I mean - "Belfast" is simply an incredible song. You can't knock that track one bit. The same could be said for Halcyon... and so forth |

Re: orbital
i'd have to agree with JtL completely. in sides would be one of my top 5 albumns i think, but other than the brown albumn which is good for me but still has a few questionable songs i agree with the albumns being ok with a handful of amazing tracks.
but this is going to make me listen to in sides in my car today on way to work. that is exciting. |
Re: orbital
I just read today that there will be an Orbital release soon, but there are no other details...
My money is on live DVD (that would certainly be nice) or some sort of rare tracks/remixes release. We'll see. |
Re: orbital
live'd be great - they were a fucking fantastic live act
|
Re: orbital
Never really cared for the song, but "Satan" live is one of my fondest concert memories.

To me Orbital has always been more beautiful than anything else.
|
Re: orbital
I got real big into them 3 years ago...I remember being a pretty big fan right when the Blue Album came out and they split up :(
My favorite is Snivilisation...it's one of the most interesting techno albums I own. I will say that Orbital are prehaps the best in the world when it comes to writing techno hooks and that's why Sniv can be such an experimental album in some ways yet still be pretty accessible. After that, there's In Sides, Orbital 2 and Middle of Nowhere...the other three albums are sort of sub-par (yet still have some great moments, like "Tension", "Satan", "Belfast", "You Lot", "Funny Break"...and so on). DO NOT get the "Work" compilation. Almost every song is shortened to a three minute single version which is ridiculous considering the scope of some of these tracks. |
