Any Orb fans?

Just got this through from the Orb Mailing List and thought it might interest some people over here. Not going to be around to listen 'live' myself, but hopefully the on-demand stream will hold up for a while.

M-T Here
...wanted to tell everyone that I'm fucking stoked about the Orb show this weekend on Music For Listeners. I've edited the interview, sent off copies of the live recording to Orb HQ, and all is ready.

The live set is going to be played as it happened on March 21st, 2006 - Red 7 in Austin, TX. I am playing selected pieces from Alex's DJ set, but the Orb set will be played as is, unedited. There maybe a voice over here or there, (station ID's, etc.), but what do you want for free? The Orb set runs just under 93 minutes!!!

This is all early morning for you in the European zones. The show airs live 5 AM - 10 AM GMT on Saturday.

If you happen to live in "A Merry Car", then it is on live at 1 AM - 6 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

For you lucky people in Australia.....it's on 3 PM - 8 PM, Saturday evening by Sydney's watch!!!

The show is currently broadcast on Central Daylight Time, so it broadcasts out of San Antonio, TX from Midnight - 5 AM CDT.

Go to www.musicforlisteners.com to follow the link to the krtu.org webcast and listen in live.

Just to let you know, I think Thomas and LX were not that pleased with some of their sounds cutting out during the set. They mentioned the sound problems after the show, but the sound cuts out only two or three times during the set for a split second. It just adds to the "live experience". These problems were in real time. I tried to edit the spaces, but it sounded even worse as it sounded like a skip instead of a break. So...the live set is as it was played and heard.

Most likely the live set will air after the interview...I plan on starting the interview rather early in the broadcast. Five hours is certainly not enough for this bands wonderful catalog, but I do hope to play my absolute favorites during the show. If you want to make a suggestion or if there is something you think I just have to play, just send me a e-mail to
info@musicforlisteners.com . I don't think any of "Okie Dokey" will be played as they play almost every track from it during the live set.

I do hope all you Orbheads get to listen. Certainly if "head" phones if you got 'em.

Muchos gracias to Alex P. for letting me record the set for radio broadcast and webcast!!! Muchos gracias to both LX and Thomas for sitting down and having a chat about their past, presents, and futures.

Peace...out
Michael "Skidoo" Thomas

P.S. Also, a big thanks to certain list members for heading me in the right direction to set up the interview.

This week on Music For Listeners....

...Ambient-house pioneers, The Orb for five hours! There will be a complete live set and also an interview that was held with Alex Patterson and Thomas Fehlmann. These were both recorded in March 2006 at the Red 7 club in Austin, TX.
Music For Listeners is also very grateful to be chosen to be the radio program to document a sound recording during the 2006 "A Merry Car Tour". You will hear the interview and the concert in its entirety along with other music written or remixed by the band. You can hear all this on this Saturday morning, July 15th, 2006. Go to www.krtu.org and listen live Midnight - 5AM CDT (5AM-10AM GMT) If you live in San Antonio, then you can listen on KRTU 91.7 on the FM dial.

Spend a part of your weekend chillin' with The Orb!

If you tune in live, you can call the station ONLY from 5AM-10AM GMT on Saturday to request your favorite Orb track. You can also send us a message on here or at info@musicforlisteners.com to make a suggestion before or during the show. If you miss the live broadcast, you can stream the show on demand for a couple of weeks on www.musicforlisteners.com

Remember.....An Orb is not just for Christmas.....it's for life...

I'm a fan of their earliest work, but I'm totally in love with the track "Masterblaster". It's a masterpiece. Everyone should know that track.

What a coincidence... i bought my first Orb album 6 days ago (Orblivion). Currently i'm listening to (almost) nothing else.
Thanks for that info!

Orblivion is an absolutely amazing album and definitely stands the test of time. Modern Orb is completely different, basically just Alex P doing minimal techno with a few friends and trading under The Orb name. Still, the radio show should be a good retrospective.

And Tom, you mean you were no longer a fan when U.F.Orb dropped? Shame on you :) That's akin to saying you were a Floyd fan... in 1968!

Re: Any Orb fans?

no, i think alex p is using the orb name while fehlmann makes the minimal techno. i dig their kompakt stuff, but i don't hear much of a connection with the orb of old.

Re: Any Orb fans?

i love the orb and i saw them last saturday at "t in the park".. about an hour set which for 20-25 mins was ace then it was pretty bland.

was quite dissappointed but i can still pick and choose some nice tracks from their latest offerings.

p.s. both guys were there as the orb.

mkb 07-14-2006 09:22 AM

Re: Any Orb fans?

when i saw them it was fehlmann up first, then both, then alex p SUCKING ASS on turntables.

All of The Adventures are great, so is U.F.Orb. After that, I dunno, their music didn't grab me as much as their first two did. I like some tracks on Cydonia though.

Haven't checked their recent minimal stuff out, might have to do that. As I said I do own the track "Masterblaster", got that by accident, but wow, one of the best tracks ever. seriously. So simple, subtle, but so good.

Re: Any Orb fans?

their second peel sessions with their cover of "no fun" by the stooges is the best thing ever.

Re: Any Orb fans?

what?

I've never heard of that! Although - the only Peel Sessions disc I've been able to find was the one with "A Huge...", "Back side of the Moon (Tranquility Lunar Orbit)" and "Into the Forth Dimension (Essenes in Starlight)"

is "no fun" like done as a proper cover? or is it more like a remix

(edit)
and I also got a chance to see them on their last tour (w/ the dj set - performance - dj set deal) and it was great... totally a lot of fun, which is something that doesn't seem to happen at shows anymore... only time I've ever had everyone around me be so chill, and yet so responsive to faster / harder tracks

Loving all of their older stuff, I haven't been into the Orb since Orblivion as it seemed after that they were coasting on whatever vapors were left in the inspiration tank.

On the other hand Thomas Fehlmann's work has been sublime and I much enjoyed his patterson corralling in "Okie Dokie! It's the Orb on Kompact!"

Yeah I thought the whole thing was pretty flat, delighted I've had the chance to see them though :)

Re: Any Orb fans?

man...

if only like - that show would get posted somewhere in Flac format, like dimeadozen or something (hint hint)

but I was also wondering about a track in the second half of the live set (so that'd be the "music_for_listeners_2006_07_15_part_05.mp3" file).

at 9:24 into the file (right after "little fluffy clouds") in comes a sample of the David Bowie & Pat Metheny song "This is Not America"

so what I was wondering - is that like a proper Orb song using the Bowie track? or - at least a proper song of someone else's?

or was it just something they threw into the mix for when they played live? (they also played it when I saw them in DC)

...too bad that this recording doesn't have that cool version of the muppet theme w/ "gay bar" [or have I somehow missed it?]

BrotherLovesDub 07-20-2006 07:44 PM

Re: Any Orb fans?

sounds like the song on the Transit Kings EP about America...got it here but can't be bothered to look for it...something about America and it's quite good too...my money's on that being the song you're refering to.
