So here it is, the release of the Dirty compilation!

I've been eager to release it since I got the idea of actually releasing a compilation.

I want to thank every artist who has contributed in this compilation. I would also like to thank all Dirts for supporting us by listening to our tunes.
Professor thanks for hosting the tracks and Biz for designing the website, it looks amazing!

i've been waiting for this, all you guys talking about the tracks made me really antsy :)

I changed tracknumbers and names in winamp just like they're listed on the site...

Listening to Solar Polar song now, which is great. Current favourite "Cool Water Temple" by Sputtnik (King Of Snake).

Ahhhh listening to The Viirus's song now. I had heard it a few days ago already but it didn't grab me but now, amazing. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

This compilation is so good.

Awesome site! Nice work to all involved.

Hey...a couple things on mine. It should be by "Grandbrother featuring Polyester, Freshchuckdaily and Rob Hypnotiq". And Leon - did you get the picture and bio I emailed you a while back? I can resend it if you didn't.

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

it's great! Everybody please take a bit of time to download this and listen, and maybe comment on the tracks. I know everyone has put a lot of effort into it.

Only nitpicky thing is that the id tags are kinda all over the place but that shouldn't take too long to rectify if it bothers you.

Professor 07-02-2006 02:58 PM

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

ahh, sean, i have the granbrother logo image, but no text for you...can you resend it to me? sorry about that

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

Nice, just downloaded. Woulda been nice if the tagging and file labelling was better so that i knew which track was which or if there was an .m3u playlist but as im listening to them all at once anyhow its not that much of a big thing. it is FREE ELECTRONICA MUSIC after all.

Professor 07-02-2006 06:46 PM

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

hmm tagging was never my forte.

Agreed! The design looks great, and it was a nice idea to have a zipped folder of the whole comp. plus be able to DL individual tracks.

Digging into the tunes now!

Really enjoying this too. And without sounding patronising, really really surprised at the excellent quality of the choons. I won't list my favourites so as not to give offence, but really some wonderful stuff in there. Thanks for the hard work, guys :)

I don't have much time these days, but when I have some, I'll write reviews of all the tracks. Everyone should :)

Leon 07-06-2006 09:02 AM

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

Ok, I'll review every song in order as how I like to listen to them:

Avid - Glow In The Dark
Very nice opening synth. the fact that the synth is phased actually gives me the feeling of something glowing in the dark. The dark "humming" is just beautiful.
I like how the drums are building up in the first part of the song, where I hear the hi-hats taking the lead, so to speak. Which makes a good rhythm. And the bleeps and blops are the light bulps in this dark song, but it really fits and doesn't bore me. Great song!

Sputnikk - Cool Water Temple
First time I heard this, I was hooked already. The beat is nice and relaxing, and the "playful" hi-hats make it a nice rhythm.
Somehow I feel that the melodies and sounds used are very "recognizable", as if I have heard them all before. But I don't think I have, it just has a really nice familiar sound, I don't know. The vocal samples and the bellsounding melody is nice.
But I gotta say, that leading synth that appears later in the song, and goes on and on, is fantastic!!!!!! It's very easily to listen to, but definately not cheesy. Very well done!

Exile Cartel - A Year In The Waiting
Again, a great song. A nice rhythm. And very nice and warm sounds that fit together really well. Piano sounds with it. Hmmmm.
One point of critique: As I use Reason myself, I asume you use Reason too. And I can hear that clearly in the drums. Maybe if you had modified the drumsamples more, and make it a more unique sound, that would be great :)
Normally I really don't like it when people use drumsamples and don't modify them, but this song is great, so I don't mind it.

Solar Polar - Aerobic Sensation
Very nice. Minimal and dark. The way I like it :p The beat is nice and those little squeeky things make it interesting. As soon as I heard those diva-ish vocals come in, I thought "oh no, not a song with diva vocals and lyrics", because I hate that cheesy shite. But it doesn't get cheesy because it's drained in echo, nice effect!
It's cool how this song kinda grew on me. When I first heard it, I heard a beat and the vocals, but later my attention gets drawn to those other low sounds.

The Viirus - Kata (For Human And Drumcomputer)
This is my favourite of the moment. It took some time for me to get into it, but man! The constant repeating, weird sound... it's just weird. I like the unique style of this.
At first listens I didn't notice a build up, but then, at 2:03 in the song, it gets a really nice... Adrenaline kinda thing.
The visuals in my head listening to this song are the insides of a body swinging back and forth.
Nice and experimental. Hmmm.

The next song in my playlist is my own song, but I'm not reviewing that.

Marshall Watson - An Evolution Of Sorts
The synth heard in the beginning reminds me of your song "I Love You Neckface", which is a really cool song. But this is something different, and really gives me a summer feeling, because of those Boards Of Canada-like synths. Or Star Guitar by Chemical Brothers. something like that. Anyway, the overall vibe of the song is just lovely. And I like the beat and the blips and blops in it.

Polyester & Freshchuckdaily - Whatever You Do (Grandbrother Does Something Mix)
Nice and funky. The cheerful vocals combined with the kinda dark vibe of the song, make it an interesting mix. That's how I interpret this anyway. That bassline has a neat melody, which I keep humming.

The Wankfoot Soundsystem - Police And Thieves
When I saw the title, I thought, YAY, that's a classic. The song itself is nice. But it takes a lot to like the vocals. The vision of you being drunk REALLY helps. It's a funny vision. But the dubby sounds and all are good.

Emmet - My Mission Is This
This is something totally different from all the songs in this comp. It's kind of a "simple" dance track, but it has that party thing to it. And I like that. It's just wicked in a ":D" kinda way. In the last part of the song the beat goes on for quite a while, which gives me almost the same feeling as Dark Train and Cowgirl give me. Adrenaline.

Sr. Cranks - Your Time Is Now
Ok, this is kinda oldskool and thus I needed some time to get into this. The acid sounds are really really nice though. The beat is good too, reminds me of a song by Luke Slater on Wireless. Nice :)

PhaseBlue - HAL TEST MSTR HI (is this the right title?)
Nice and long. I like the whole vibe of the song because of the nice sounding synth. The part at around 5:30 is just beautiful!

Come on wit' the feedback yo!

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

You want feedback? You got it! i just listened to the whole thing again, and wrote some thoughts on each track in the order they're placed in the compilation. i hope the artists and others get my drift, which is overwhelmingly positive:) :

“What Ever You Do” – Polyester & Freshchuckdaily: Smooth melodies and a groovin’ beat which builds nicely and is heavy on the bass drum, but never overwhelms. And, while i’m not usually into hip-hop vocals, I really dig the refrain…it’s fun!

“A Year in Waiting” – Exile Cartel: This track has a lot of warmth to it, lots of variety of layers, instruments and countermelodies to the main bass chords. The short guitar riff has such great treatment, too…lovely balance of chorus, reverb, tone, whatever- gives it a very summery sound! I just wish the song didn’t end so abruptly.

“Police & Thieves” – The Wankfoot Soundsystem: I don’t know the original version of the tune, so I can’t comment on how this differs. But on its own, I like the contrast between the reggae song structure and the breakbeats. Some of the effects (like the speeding-up sound and the female vocal clip) are high in the mix, but they’re short so they don’t take over. As for the vocal, yeah it’s unique, but without knowing any better, I figured it was supposed to sound kinda strung-out. There are some nice moment with layered vocals, too.

CoolWaterTemple” – Sputnikk: This is a track I was really looking forward to hearing, since I’ve enjoyed King of Snake’s Sputnikk productions in the past, which were more trancey. You’ve really expanded your sound! The opening melody and the twinkly keys give the track a happy vibe immediately, a sense of child’s play. Enter the female voice about creating perfect life and the buzzy lead line and the track moves into the realm of Orbital (likes something off of “Snivilization”)…for me, that’s a good thing! The washes of synth at the end are lovely, as well.

“Aerobic Sensation” – Solar Polar: A nice minimal track, this. I dig the glitchy beats and the warm bassline. The diva-like vocals are awesome, too…”You make me feel so good” – is that nixed from “Move” by Moby? Bits of “Good Vibrations” in there, too. The delay and swirls of the vocals are nice touches, too…Again, the quick fade out left me wanting more!

“An Evolution of Sorts” – Marshall Watson: based on Professor’s other tracks, I had high expectations for this, and he didn’t disappoint! The opening analog key note and pulsing melody interact well, a very M83-like vibe. But once the drums and warm pads drop in, it’s distinctly your sound we’re getting! Lots of flanging or phasing reminding me of the summer breeze. I like how your tracks somehow feel simultaneously melancholy and uplifting. And, the beats and melodies do evolve throughout. The ping-pong outtro beat is a fun finish.

“Kata” – The Viirus: A darker track than those previous, and its nice that we get a drum-n-bass inclusion in the compilation. So many great effects on the drums and effects, flying up in the mix and building the energy. Around 2 minutes, you settle into a great groove and the track takes off. As many jungle-type tracks, the melodies are sparse and the beats ever-changing, but it holds together well, probably as you have that bell-like rhythm throughout.

“Quelebric Hazel” – A Gator Got Her: The clicking beats seem slightly out of phase, giving the track an unsettling entrance. But the three-note lead entrance is just great. There’s a whiring sound in the left channel after ~2:35 that, to compare to Orbital again, sounds a lot like “Planet of the Shapes”. Simple melody, but with the bass playing against the lead, and that whiring noise, it holds interest well!

“My Mission is This” – Emmet: Knowing Emmet’s style, I expected a banging dance track, made all the more energetic because of the track order of the compilation. Lots of samples flying through this track. The track takes off after 2 minutes in, with a great synthline and a very Depeche Mode-like vocal! Love the robo snippets and guitar flanges too. The production is excellent. I’m dancing in my chair as I write this!

“Your Time is Now” – Sr. Cranks: This one builds up so effectively. All the elements (beats, background whirling synth, effects and blips) work really well together, entering and exiting at exactly the right time, and you’ve obviously put a lot of work into crafting each of these components. The lush middle section is a nice diversion, and, I’m a sucker for dropped beats, which you use effectively around it. Great techno track, this!

“Glow in the Dark” – Avid: Hey, that’s me! i’m just happy my little track is alongside these real artists!

“HAL TEST MSTR Hi” – PhaseBlue: Our compilation’s semi-ambient come-down! The HAL bits from 2001 and the echoes and deep beats make me feel like I’m in outer space. That heartbeat is changing bpm, isn’t it? Lovely string melodies and the deep bass fills the gaps. I like the blippy beat that sounds like a short raygun. The hi-hat really gives the track a sense of drive. At 5:40 or so, the new melody seems to herald something important, and I love how these two parts of the song still seem totally integrated by virtue of the elements you repeat. This makes a 12+ minute track go by effortlessly. After 10 minutes, there’s a subtle skipping beat that lends some danceability to the track, sort of like The Orb’s ambient house style.

Well done, everyone! I’m enjoying this more and more with each listen. So cool how all these unique styles still can go so well together and the contrasts in styles actually make certain aspects stand out all the more (e.g. going from lush to hard, vocal to instrumental, etc.). Was the tracklist varied a lot? It seems totally correct!:D

Glad to hear you say that. Thanks! I'm not big into hip-hop either, but I asked them if I could use the vocals for the same reason you mentioned here. It's just fun, which is why it seemed good for a summer compilation to me.

Really? What do you call this style? It reminded me of jungle and d-n-b beats, though admittedly there's not a lot of bass. Ah, i could never really understand genre definitions cos lots of tracks don't fit neatly and the defs are often subjective 'kindalikeasorta'.
Whatever. i like your track!

Class act guys. My personal faves would have to be "Cool Water Temple" and "Quelebric Hazel". Hopefully next year ill be worthy enough to have a song on there myself. But until then ill just listen to you guys doing it how it should be done. :)

Re: Finally: Dirty Summer Compilation.

Hi dirts,

I’m doing my NME bit here too.

Great effort from everyone and a special well done to Leon for organizing the whole shebang.

1 : Polyester & Freshchuckdaily - Whatever You Do (Grandbrother Does Something Mix)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This mix in my opinion is way better than the original. The original is clichéd in places and the hip hop rap sound dated. This mix however creates a fresh feel with a capital cool. I wanna get on the floor and do something. Classy and already in my fav folder.

2 : Exile Cartel - A Year in the waiting
----------------------------------------
We go even more down tempo with this. The track builds then fades nicely. I really like the guitar sound (what is this?).

3 : The Wankfoot Soundsystem - Police & Theives
-----------------------------------------------
Spliff up and sit on your porch (if you have one) then reggae it up. It starts of reggae – then gets more "Orb-ish" with the echoes and samples dropped later on. Strangely reminded me of Chief Wiggum singing “Jammin” (not in a bad way though :) ).

4 : Sputnikk - Cool Water Temple
--------------------------------
A layered lead arrives after the intro and guides us along into the tune, building slowly with confidence to help us arrive into a beautiful chilled out descent. I started whistling the lead in Tesco yesterday!

5 : Solar Polar - Aerobic Sensation
-----------------------------------
shit

6 : Marshall Watson - An Evolution of sorts
-------------------------------------------
The organ grinds, the arpeggiator bubbles with a beautiful echo, the minimal beats tease, the lead says nothing but manages to convey a retrospective melancholy which subsequently transforms into hope and beats. (NME muso writers - watch out!)

7 : The Virus - Kata (for human and drum computer)
----------------------------------------------------------
Keeping a bell like chime underbeat throughout, the track throws sounds at you from near and afar, layering and mixing blips, bleeps and drums in a style that I'm sure, edited, wouldn't have gone amiss on the late John Peel's evening shows. Praise indeed. More cowbell.

8 : A Gator Got Her - Quelebric Hazel
-------------------------------------
This one fades in with clicks and bass... then fades up with an electro pop sound that stands up well on its own... I found myself singing words to it and you may too.

With an added vocal this would be my stand out track on this compilation.

9 : Emmet - My Mission is This
------------------------------
DANCE NOW! Four to the floor with samples, tweaks and stabs to frenzy you up in an old skool style. Robots and samples aplenty then... Fuck me - there's singing too.. with a catchy lyric this really starts to rock. Cmon Now :)

(I'd love to remix this)

10 : Sr Cranks - Sr Cranks Your Time is Now
------------------------------------------
Following on with more upbeat sounds, Sr Cranks introduces hard and tough sounding synths - screaming along with heavy drums that drop into a mix of sweet versus nasty.

11 : Avid - Glow in the Dark
---------------------------
The start gives me a warm glow inside - a reminder of St Ettienne and The Smiths before then delving in and out of that sound using synth lines and stabs, topped of with cheery bleeps. Love it.

12 : PhaseBlue : HAL Test Msts Hi
---------------------------------
Chillout with HAL samples and the music to-ing and fro-ing from spliff-tastic ambient to a quicker pace which may get you out your chair and hit the munchies. Lovely layers.

Hmmm glad you like it :) And the funny thing is, listening to the "electropop sound" over and over made me sing to it too and this song I originally wanted it to have lyrics. But I tried and I tried and it just didn't sound right. So I left them out. But now that you've mentioned it, I'm gonna try and do a version with vocals for this :)
