"I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

so... what do we think?

it's an incredibly lush release. i asked earlier how things can get more chilled after PFE in slight disbelief, and this is how that's done. talking about an ambient underworld album a couple years back too.. seems to have finally yielded itself in the form of this 30 minute release.

routinely calm for an unusual 5 minutes, then it just dives into full involvment. pretty exhilirating, and it pulls back again as if it never happened. pulsates in some of riverrun's warmest parts. every element used as a rhythm to make it a smooth block of sound. lots of spoken bits throughout, and a little bit of recycling from other songs. 'wedge' (i believe it's called) is one of karl's finest moments. also fairly large surprise at the end, music-wise.

it doesn't disappoint, let's say... or understate. at least on par with previous riverruns.

Best of the three, in my opinion. Absolutely loving every track, though I can't pick a favourite just yet. This is exactly what I needed to hear right now.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Hmm.

"Ansum Part 3" :)

I need to listen to it in my car, its easier to feel the 'power' behind ambient tracks when your driving.

Right now, its not something i will listen too time and time again...

I guess i do appreciate the ambient Underworld, but not for 30 minutes.. im sorry to say this but i just find parts of it boring!

Strangley, its JAL that remains my fav RRP track - i think mainly because of its lyrical quality, but also its energy and rythym...

early deivery is fine, but that means i'm a couple hours behind schedule today due to this bag of awesome, which screws the rest of todays events for me.
but...ah, i'll live :D

Perfect Night-Driving-Music........
Peach Tree is my pick for this batch.......the way "11 hundred hz." blends into it reminds me of "Please Help Me".
For all those wishing for something a little more uptempo, keep in mind that standard releasing may have not permitted this side of U/W to be shown.....
The piano piece at the end is simply beautiful......
Now, back to listening........

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

After the second listen, I'm a lot more positive. At first, I found it a bit boring, but it is actually really good, especially the first part. I hope Peach Tree gets a proper release. But the slideshow is definitely not my cup of coffee.
Pizza for Eggs is still my favourite, probably followed by Big Sister

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Noticed that some of the spoken stuff said on this release was played just before the "Heal all bodies track" on the dityradio broadcast.

I cant get the slideshow on to iTunes any hints on getting it on there and how to get it in on to an iPod [never done it before] Actually, i cant get it to work at all. Help!

Anyone else notice that the file name is '05 I'm a big...'?

Does this mean there were 2 other potential RiverRun releases since P4E that never saw release?

This one seems to blend better from one song to the next, and the quality of the music is pretty great. Definetely could go for more stuff like this...I think it's up there with the last one in terms of quality. But the 160 kbps makes me angry...why can't we even get 192 again, if not even better?

But good stuff, regardless!

"I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Not only is the "Sister Princess Girl" mp3 file in 160kbps.........it's 48kHz as well......meaning it won't burn to cd (without converting it and making it sound EVEN SHITTIER!!!!!)

Do you think that last piece involves Gabriel Yared? It doesn't sound like their usual style and I know that Yared is a pianist, which, to the best of my knowledge, neither Rick or Karl are.

mmm skyscraper 06-04-2006 09:52 PM

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

I like it. If they put this and LBT together it would be about as long as AHDO and probably just as good.

I would buy this as a cd release.

Personally, the 160k doesn't matter. I think the 96k radio broadcast sounds ok. It took me 3 hours 3 min and 40 sec to download, so the higher birate would have just taken longer. Now maybe if they left the slideshow off it wouldn't have been so bad . The joys of 56k. :)

LBT - UWR-0500003-1
P4E - UWR-0500004-1
TOKYO CD - UWR-0500007-3
I'm a Big Sister... - UWR-0600013-1

on my PFE track the ID3v2 tag lists it as track #2, so maybe the cat number and track number do not match. I don't have LBT on this computer, does anyone have its track #?

so we're missing 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 :) (or we have Factory numbering and some of these are stationary and statues)

Too many technical issues with the slideshow. The audio works, but I can't the pictures yet. Oh well.

Nice. I like this chilled stuff.

Does anyone speak Japanese? UW have been putting in a few spoken Japanese bits recently. In the piece at about 22:30, the girl says 「俺のせいじゃない」 or "ore no sei ja nai". This is a fairly masculine phrase, so it seems weird to hear a woman saying it :)

Just thought I'd mention.

Re: Okay, now I'm really pissed off!

After trying to convert it and getting nothing but sped up garbage.......

I tried the program Nero which allowed me to burn it at 2x speed only. At least now I can listen to it for the first time on something other than crap computer speakers.

If I can make an mp3 in 320kbps then holy crap I know that master Rick can....so this is just crazy!:(

BeautifulBurnout 06-05-2006 01:42 AM

Re: Okay, now I'm really pissed off!

Maybe the whole purpose was to make it difficult to burn to CD, so people couldn't bootleg it and sell it on eBay/Japanese Yahoo/whatever?

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

I'm on my third listen now, and christ this is good. Finally I have something to replace Ansum with when I want a nice, long UW ambient piece to listen to.

I didn't honestly notice the 160kbps thing until the forum went up in arms about it, but it doesn't worry me. It's not like I'd know the difference anyway.

If anyone has trouble viewing the art, try playing the MOV in VLC, that worked for me no worries.

Style-wise, it made me think of Keith Jarrett when I first heard it. But it has got its own uniqueness about it that I like very much indeed. Who knows?

The video is encoded in H.264, and thus, requires QuickTime 7 in order to play back.

ooh, christmas time :)
So apparently this release was not in fact gonna be more harder stuff, but even more chilled. Enjoying this so far, not quite as much as the last one but good, and it'll probably grow on me.
The 160 kbps/48 Khz thing is really weird though. I'm not one who can tell the difference but it sure is a strange choice of format, especially since the previous ones were better quality.

They'd have to be HUGE cheapskates, considering QuickTime is free. :)

Not that I want to contribute to the bitrate debate, but the 2 videos are practically identical. The codecs are the same (H.264/AAC), and the only difference is the container (QuickTime vs. MPEG-4). Because iPods, QuickTime, and iTunes can play H.264/AAC in either container, it was really only necessary to include one of the videos (either one). That could have saved 10 MB in the archive size which perhaps could have gone to a 192 Kbps MP3.

Not deleted. Just merged. And rightly so.

Considering out of the last 10 posts you have made on the forum, 8 have been whiney ones. We get the point. Some of us agree, some don't. Whining about it isn't going to change the minds of those that don't agree with you.

Or are you just gonna keep your posting another thread about it until everyone says they agree with you?

Its still very easily possible to burn it to CD but that would result in a loss of quality, because CDs use 44.1khz and this audio uses 48khz.

PC users who don't with to install Quicktime 7 can choose to install QuicktimeAlternative which isnt as CPU/memory intensive as the Apple player and doesnt continously bug you to upgrade to Quicktime Pro. The benefits and download link are listed on the URL above.

If Underworld's service provider is charging them for bandwidth usage then reducing the archive size by 10mb per download makes a bigger difference than the upgrade to 192kbps/44.1khz.

denkbat 06-05-2006 05:38 AM

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

I guess I was one of the first to point out the 160kbps bitrate, but I didn't mean to complain... It's more of a source of confusion than anything else. But I now understand that the final size of the package is an important factor, especially since several users still struggle with low bandwidth.

The quality is good. Quite adequate for those of us who just throw it on our iPods and stroll down the street. But yes, there are people who will notice. Some have high-end hardware, and others simply want to make CDs.

But rather than complain, it would be better to ask that the Riverrun releases are made available in a lossless format to those who have paid for them. This way, people get a choice of quality. CD-quality, or the originally released 192/160kbps quality that's appropriate for portable players.

So yes, let's stop complaining, but let us still voice our opinions to the UW-people about how we'd want these releases to be. They might want feedback, but in a polite manner. The "I'd rather download illegally"-comment is way out of line, and totally unacceptable. Particularly since they DID make this package available to us a day in advance.

And the music is good! It's a nice day to be an Underworld-fan :)

And let's all be friends ;)

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

To my ears it sounds great. And the music is also superb. Of course a higher bitrate would have been nice, but i probably would not hear the difference anyway.
But it's great that this recording apparently was not compressed and/or limited. :)

my fist attempt to make a cuesheet (tested with foobar2000):
Code:

FILE "05 I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and this is my Horse.mp3" MP3

  TRACK 01 AUDIO
    TITLE "11 Hundred Hz"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 00:00:00

  TRACK 02 AUDIO
    TITLE "Peach Tree"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 05:39:52

  TRACK 03 AUDIO
    TITLE "Mowed Path"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 09:47:25

  TRACK 04 AUDIO
    TITLE "Showlder"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 14:41:70

  TRACK 05 AUDIO
    TITLE "Wedge"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 18:35:27

  TRACK 06 AUDIO
    TITLE "'piano piece'"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 28:12:44

Please don't moan about this.;)

I'm not sure, but maybe 11 Hundred Hz is the piano piece at the end? The opener would be part of Peach Tree then.
