les covers

So I am listening to dirtyradio at work and all those Cut Copy tunes really jazz things up in the office. And then I hear !!!'s cover of The Magnetic Fields' Take Ecstacy With Me. I heart covers, so long as they sound as amazing, sometimes even better than the original. Anyway. I've also heard Peter Gabriel's version of Magnetic Fields' Book of Love and no, don't like it as much.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but what is your favorite cover?

Mine's Doves' cover of The Beatles' Blackbird.

I'd have to sit and have more of a think but Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From Me Friends" springs to mind..

'Some Velvet Morning' By Primal Scream

David Bowie songs by Seu Jorge of the Life Acuatic OST are of the best covers i heard lately.

'like a Virgin' by Marylin Manson is cool too :o

Richard Cheese does some great lounge covers of popular songs. My favorite at the moment is Add it Up by the Violent Femmes.

hmm.... I am not a huge fan of covers, but here's some prettty good ones

Horace Andy - Ain't No Sunshine
Primal Scream - Some Velvet Morning (prefer the single version though)
David Bowie - Cactus
Martin Gore - By This River
Talking Heads - Take Me to the River
Ian Brown - Thriller
Jamie Lidell - Music Will Not Last (cover of Herbert's "The Audience")
U2 - Neon Lights

oh, and Peter Gabriel's cover of "Get Up Stand Up" isn't incredible but it's definitely interesting

Arcade Fire's version of The Talking Head's "Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place)"

And if you like covers, might I suggest coverville.com. It's a podcast where the guy plays all covers, and it generally has a theme. It's good fun to listen to!

Re: les covers

Soft Cell : Tainted Love (Gloria Gaynor)
Siouxsie & the Banshees : Dear Prudence (Beatles)
Gus Gus : Is Jesus Your Pal (not sure if this is the cover or someone else covered it, but i had a coworker bring in a tape of a folk singer who also sang this song)

since most "good" covers are rather subjective,
i really like:
Ministry : Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan)
Scaras : Get The Balance Right (Depeche Mode)

Covers that I dig...

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

Pearl Jam - Masters of War (Bob Dylan)

Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)

The Sundays - wild Horses (The Rolling Stones)

Pj Harvey & Bjork - Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)

Morrissey - Redondo Beach (Patti Smith)

and some more I guess...

The Nine Inch Nails cover of Dead Souls by Joy Division is pretty good, especially in the context it gets presented in during The Crow.

One of my all time favourite covers though is the cover of No, No, No done by the French trip-hop outfit Melaaz. It can be found on the Lamb Back To Mine; sweet, sultry and sexy.
