Daft Punk live is a must see

Great day and night out at Coachella this year. I'm very tired and have to make this brief but if you have the opportunity to catch Daft Punk anytime on their tour, you really should go. They amp up some of their classics and keep the energy going at a high and steady pace.

Plus the robot costumes just rule.

Their visuals, basically a pyramid stage that has its own powered lighting, is a very nifty piece of work.

The only disappointment I had is that they didn't respond to a good 5 minutes worth of clapping and cheering for an encore after they had left the stage, and they also didn't play Revolution 909. But that would be me reaching for perfection. These guys know how to put on one hell of a show.

well - I am really glad that the show was cool

too bad they only have one show in the US on their entire world tour... but there's still hope that they'll come back... right?

how long was their show? Honestly, they would've been the only reason why I would've gone to Coachella (heard that MA were playing more US shows later)

and did they perform in costume?

Re: Daft Punk live is a must see

yeah they were in the robot outfits. They went on a little after 11pm and finished at around 12:15am. They had about 5 minutes worth of the crowd calling for an encore when it was all over.

I think I was in the audience right next to the dude who posted that video.

Anyhow, one of the great live experiences of my life. I could cry.

Tangentally, My Morning Jacket was almost equally amazing.

Yes, hard to believe it's nearly been ten years since I saw them at Guvernment in Toronto, and hundresd of shows later it's still the best Dance act of my days.

Will they ever return!!?

I have a few vids as well but can't find my camera-to-PC cable at the moment so I will probably do that tomorrow.

I went to Coachella for Daft Punk and Massive Attack and both delivered. As an added bonus, I got to see some other great bands and sulk through a very average if not disappointing Depeche Mode show (they saved their best stuff for the end and I had already taken off to see Daft Punk before they got into their Violator stuff).

I may go to global gathering just for them.

I'm sold. Was waiting to hear reports from this show, I figured it would either be overrated or amazing, and I'm glad to hear it's the later.

The question is now which festival to go to - Global Gathering or Summercase in Barcelona. I prefer the linup at Global Gathering, but it's more expensive, in England, and requires camping, which I hate.

I thought Massive was great, but the audience really fucked it up for me. I was waiting at the front, totally in awe when they came on. The problem was, every single person around me was a hardcore 300 lb skin head TOOL fan who was simply in the crowd so that they could catch TOOL as well. Dont get me wrong. I love TOOL. But when you have 30 guys screaming "go back to england" to massive attack, just because they cant wait another hour to see TOOL, it really sort of ruined the experience. That and, liz frazer totally sucked. Her vocals were totally drowned out, and she seemed like she was on anti depressants or something. Otherwise, totally pleased.

yeah some knucklehead came charging out of the middle area before Massive Attack came on and knocked down everyone in his path. I heard the calls for Massive Attack to get off the stage for Tool also, but it wasn't to a great degree because I really wasn't paying attention to them.

What was the last song Massive Attack played? That fucked with my head in a very good way...

My sentiments exactly.

I think the only other time I was that blown away was the first time I saw Underworld, and this took me even higher. I'm still getting chills thinking about this.

I was kind of disappointed by Massive Attack. The sound mixing was pretty bad, but maybe that was because I was about 20 feet from the stage (camped out for Tool who were AWESOME!!!!) Especially the songs Liz Frasier was doing. Her voice was sooooooo quiet over the too loud bass.

Also probably didn't help that I was surrounded by most of hte people screaming for Tool to come on. Honestly I thought it was poor choice to have Massive Attack on that stage before Tool while Coheed and Cambria were playing the other stage. Yeah Massive Attack were bigger, but I think there's much more overlap in the fanbase for those two than Massive Attack and Tool.

Agreed. Daft Punk = Best ever.
Highlights:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Daft Punk
Los Amigos
Wolf Parade
Metric
.... ugh, i dont know... so many.

Kevin getting on the speaker at the end of the show was a bit rockstar cheesy. He didnt even go crazy and use the whammy bar or anything. It was like a glitter moment.

I was really looking forward to seeing Massive Attack this year, but it seems like their performance was so anti-climatic. I thought they were awesome anyway, and I wasn't expecting to hear much from their older albums. I was in front of the stage on the right; being pressed against the barrier by hundreds of Tool fans is not fun. Also, what's not fun is that the people around you are so unimpressed by Massive Attack. I also heard a bunch of people yelling at them to get off the stage and stop with the "gay ass electronica."

It was also anti-climatic after having watched Daft Punk the night before with one of the best performances ever at Coachella. I felt so overwhelmed by the stage set up, the music and the energy from the people around me. Everyone was nonstop dancing, jumping, cheering, just wow. I'm hoping someone recorded a bootleg of that.

Other highlights: Sigur Ros, Ladytron (I only caught the last bit), Tool was great from the outskirts of the angry mob, Los Amigos Invisibles, and Metric.

Yeah, I'm sure Emily flashing everyone a shot of her panties really helps their record sales. I saw one photographer actually angling his camera up her dress.

Actually, the whole band is dreamy and their music rocked too (as always).

Re: Daft Punk live is a must see

I'll repeat the praise for Daft Punk. I'm an old school fan of theirs, i.e. I hate the last album, didn't even buy it, and Discovery was hit or miss. I really had no expectations for this show, it was either gonna be lazy and dumb or out of this world. It was way out of this world.
You've all seen the pics and video, but being in the crowd was insane. The tent was packed, which surprised me. I figured it would be full, but it was very full and everyone was really into it. They played nonstop for 40 minutes before they paused for a few seconds. During that pause, the crowd yelled and screamed so loud, you could feel it. Then another roar came up that was louder than the first. It was amazing.
The track selection was fun and some songs that weren't played in full were sampled. Standouts for me were Technologic with the Busta Rhymes mash-up and Da Funk. Crescendolls was really fun too.
As for the encore thing, the reason people were hanging out so long clapping, aside from the amazing show, was that the pyramid kept doing shit after the show. So most of us thought more might be coming. But they did play over an hour and it sounded great.
DO NOT MISS this show if you have the chance to see it. I spent a lot of money I don't have to get there, and it was completely worth it for Daft Punk alone.

Nah, the sound at the Moses show was shithouse. And he looked like he was off his face, propped up against the mic like that.

I've been watching all the videos circulating from this show and they make me cry. I would've loved to be there.

I also hated their last album-- felt like they forced a third album and didn't feel like them at all. Aside from Technologic, what other tracks did they play from the new album? How were they live compared to on the CD?

Re: Daft Punk live is a must see

what's with the hating on their last album?

I mean - it was in the spirit of their first, and "Technologic" "Robot Rock" "Emotion" "Human After All" "Television Rules the Nation" and "Steam Machine" were all great songs... wait, that's almost the whole album... yea

verbal 05-03-2006 10:51 AM

Re: Daft Punk live is a must see

I just think they overused the heavy guitar sound. Their first album had a mixture of different sounds to it. Human After All felt like they had a small bank of sounds that they used for every track.

Everytime I hear Technologic, it reminds me of a Kinko's advert, with its "fax it, print it, ship it." Also, kind of sounds like a different version of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.
