finland to send death metal band to eurovision song contest

A far cry from the breezy folk tunes and ultra-safe pop of traditional Eurovision fare, Lordi have scored hits with songs such as Blood Red Sandman. They wield chainsaws on stage, and never perform or give interviews without wearing their rubber fright masks |

Hahahaha. Classic. :D The nordics are nuts.

Ah ha ha ha ha. Their album is called 'The Arockalypse'.
For the record, I fucking LOVE Eurovision. Wogan is God. Kneel before him. |
Re: finland to send death metal band to eurovision song contest
Disappointing. They sound like Guns and Roses. or Meatloaf. Or a heavier version of Bon Jovi. Not Cradle of Filth or Sunn 0))).

No way! Not Lordi. I've seen these guys. They were the closing band at the World Air Guitar Championships in Oulu, Finland in 2004. They put on quite a show I can tell you. Plenty of fire and theatrics and some of it is quite melodic even if it is completely over the top. Monster-metal is how i'd describe it. I dont think they take themselves very seriously.
At the same championships were top air "band" Air-on Maiden who were hilarious. Doing perfect impressions of a whole band including fuckups and solos and technical problems with air roadies fixing them. Maybe they should be on the Eurovision. Theyre Belgian I believe so theres a good chance they'd be better than anything the Belgians can drag out :p |

In the media:
New York Times "Finland Squirms as Its Latest Export Steps Into Spotlight" The Guardian "Finland sends in the heavy metal mob for its Eurovision challenge" The Sunday Times "Finland gets bloody minded" The BBC "Finns shocked by Eurovision band" De Telegraaf (Dutch) "Finse 'satansband' naar Europese songfestival" (overdoing the headlines as usual) International Herald Tribune "Monster band has Finland fretting over face it shows" (interesting perspective) If you search for Lordi + Hallelujah on YouTube you can also watch both the video and their performance on the Eurovision qualifying. Satanist? I think not. Alice Cooper-lite? probably. Entertaining anyway and I hope they make it past the semi-final onto the main show. I wonder what Terry Wogan will say... |

and guess what...
the crazy Finns WIN by a bloody Landslide i kid you not!!!! wow... HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH fuck me...and nearly everyone voted for them.... 12 points from the UK judges...(i.e. the public....) |
Re: finland to send death metal band to eurovision song contest
haha, i was just coming in here to celebrate the public triumph of taste regarding this.
the great restorer of faith. in an era of war, confusion, recycling and outright lying, finnish horror rock groups can still win a popular europe-wide song contest. it's not novelty, it's recognition for things which are inescapably awesome... things that trounce the nice little pop tunes typically entered in these things. we are without doubt the best generation to have lived |

Re: finland to send death metal band to eurovision song contest
as a finn i can just say that hell has officially frozen over. a eurovision victory by a landslide? WTF
as much as i've never cared for the competition (nor lordi for that matter), it's pretty interesting how much more focus/coverage their victory has brought for the whole event... i'm quite sure no-one would've really noticed if the winner was just another bubblegum pop princess. ppl say that there's a lot of KISS in lordi's music, but i keep hearing a cheesier (if possible) version of alice cooper. their winning song just reminds me of "poison" etc. but as far as musically speaking, they're openly crap. then again so is eurovision :) also in a way it's nice to see this country celebrating something for once. finland has incredibly low self-esteem when it comes to competitions. we always lose everything, football, hockey etc. it's a quintessential part of being a finn. the downside is that if this country ever wins anything it tends to really over-celebrate it nevertheless: after 40 years of relentless eurovision failure, finland's song ends up winning by a record-breaking point average? surreal. |
Re: finland to send death metal band to eurovision song contest
I love Eurovision!
When we were kids, my brother, sister and I used to take it very seriously, watching all the British heats, delighted or disappointed as our favourites won or lost. Then the big night - our parents would tolerate us with a wry smile as we got all excited, and were allowed to stay up late to watch the final votes come in. It was great to sit there with my own son last night, as we laughed and took the mickey out of all the different acts. And "stern" warnings from his dad that he shouldn't laugh, cos he could end up like that if he doesn't do his bass practice. :p I didn't hang around for the votes, but came away with the view that if Lordi didn't win it, there was no justice in the world. Great fun! :D |

I'm going next year. See you in Finland. We're going to drink a shot of every country's national spirit along with their performance. I fucking love Eurovision. Did anyone else here Lithuania's entry? It was called 'We Are The Winners' (By LT United) and it actually illicited a number of boos from the Athens crowd. I thought it was fucking hilarious though. |
