Silent Hill

!!Potential spoilers ahead!!!

I've been waiting for a movie of this game for so very long. I have a lot to comment on.

S**tty writing, s**tty plot, s**tty acting, but the sound and the visuals were amazing. The only parts that I really enjoyed were the horrific parts, as they were very intense. About 95% of the music used was from the video games, but that sure made no difference to me, it all worked great. There were a lot of parts that were almost directly out of the games, along with some more subtle nods to those who know the games well. Towards the end the plot changed a lot. Away from what's in the game (obviously), but it's just kind of cheesy. There was some unecissary gore, that I thought didn't really need to be shown. It is Silent Hill after all so this was to be expected to some degree.

And like I said, the dialogue was so bad, that people were laughing quite often at how cheesy and awkward it was.

My $0.02

I'm really curious about other's thoughts....

I never played any of the games at all... and I really got a kick out of it. A lot of the gore was really great I thought (I'm thinking of two scenes in particular) although the CG does get a bit out of control toward the end. Still though, I liked it quite a bit, having never been exposed to any of the story or creature design of the game.

i'm going to see it tomorrow.

Viddy- so you liked it or not? seems like good and bad points.

i've been really looking forward to this movie, seems like it'll be one of the few game adaptation that well be great. than i saw the preview on television with the little girl saying "i'm the reaper"

...

but i'm still looking forward to this film.

This totally crept up on me and I hadn't realised it came out last Friday. I'll catch it this week with a bit of luck. Prepared for equal measures of cheese and horror. The TV ad makes it look awesome though!

I thought the entire subplot with Sean Bean could have been removed and it would have been a significant improvement. Indeed, it has been reported that this subplot was added at the insistence of studio executives who fretted about there being no men in the movie. Perhaps a director's cut is in order!

Aside from that, it was great. The atmosphere and the creepy monsters were amazing. I think in its best monents it beat Hellraiser at its own game. Pyramid Head was very impressive on the big screen.

I'm vaguely familiar with the games, having watched friends play through parts of them. I was impressed with the film's adherence to the tone and visual style of the games. The score was great too. I'm a little iffy about the huge block of exposition that got thrown in cutscene-style at the end. It wasn't completely terrible but I think, like the Sean Bean subplot, that it really deflated the tension and pace of the movie. Again, I think a leaner cut would be a big improvement.

Akira Yamaoka, who is also a producer for the game and the film.

All of the music in the film is from the games, which can be found here:

saw this movie this past weekend. I liked it but it was average movie at best. it didn't capture the silent hill feel at all, instead of being scared its more of "wow, thats really gross". the acting was not that great, the special effects not that great, the music I love!

Pyramid Head was the best thing about the film. The part where those 2 are in that place where ph is penetrating with that thing of his. i wonder what that was all about? :-p

Re: Silent Hill

i loved it.

pace was wonderful. genuine sense of dread with each alarm blast that resulted in horrible surrealism that tops the last one.
acting from the main woman was pretty allright i thought. at least her reaction to horrible disgusting things were anyway. dialogue was functional at best but didnt really detract. pyramid head was amazing.

i might actually see it again

Re: Silent Hill

I disagree. the pacing was terrible. everytime it gets exciting, it slows down with scenes of the husband and detective.

DARKNESS IS COMING!

Re: Silent Hill

yeah, i agree about that, we could have done without. it's just sort of this tack-on thing thats more of a breather than anything interesting and could totally be cut out.

but it didnt really bug me. it was more like "ok sure.. now back to pyramid head and the growing nervous breakown of being stuck in a place so completely FUCKED."

which was done well *golf clap*

You know I'm that poor that I can't even afford a trip to the cinema at the moment. Though this has forced me to re-evaluate my situation. PH is the shiznit.

i heart pyramind head.

Only one word came to mind: NO. Left one hour into it and snuck into MiIII, again: NO. Thank god we bought the massive, guargantune popcorn and soda's with free refills or we would have starved, bored to death. Not enough green ginger in the world could have saved our night.

Shame. I've just seen it and whilst I wasn't anywhere near walking out I do appreciate that the first half is pretty slow. I thought the whole thing was pretty good however, and much better than I had expected. Cast was a bit limp (particularly that little girl) though the dark was brilliantly realised and the gore was grade A stuff. Aside from a few jumps the only real scares came from the mentality of the people in the church which was very reminiscent of The Wicker Man to me. The last 20 minutes were fucking ace. A nice smattering of cap doffs to the games too without being annoying for those who haven't played them (i.e. Lisa the nurse - that shit with the bleeding eyes scared the fuck out of me in the first game).

I liked it.

Oh fuck, I forgot all about 'Colin' crawling about all hog-tied with barbed wire. That was the best SH moment in here for me. Genuine horror and revulsion swept over me at that point.

Oh, ripping peoples skin off is AWESOME.
