The Avalanches - Since I Left You
 

it's almost five years since i stumbled across this gem from australia (thanks to recommendations from this forum), and i am still loving it as i did on the first day.
i don't think i have listened to another album on the same regular basis as i have listened to this; i am still listening to it every two weeks, and i have recently wrecked the second tape of it in my car because i'm playing it that often. i officially declare the title track my favourite song ever.

while other albums fail to keep their shine over the years, this still sounds incredibly fresh and innovative, although many of the over 900 samples (that's what they say) used are several decades old. i don't know how they did it, but this is probably the most unique album i have ever heard; a jungle of samples, breaks, turntablism and funk, perfectly blended, happy, uplifting, tongue-in-cheek and equally soul- and playful .

unfortunately this album and an EP is all they have ever released (and some very cool mixes by Dj Dexter).

god bless them (and let's hope that they will release another album....one day....)

yea

they even posted a couple of outtakes/teasers for the 'next album' ...but then the monthly updates started coming late... then stopped altogether

they (the updates) may or may not have stopped when dexter left the group... so that kind of says something, doesn't it?

it really is unfortunate that they haven't really released anything since then, save for like a remix or two

I have a sinking feeling that what's going to happen with them is what happened w/ the Prodigy... you know - expectations, and whatnot

bit of a side-note, but has anyone noticed that all those albums that keep getting delayed, etc etc.... you hear that the band has all these tracks done, may play a couple of live shows w/ one of two new tracks... then the project is delayed again. After that last delay, you discover that the bulk of what they originally hyped is gone - and it turns out that their new album was recorded in like a week (a la Daft Punk)

I've got some mix they did that sounds just like Since I Left You but has a lot of other shit mixed in too....is that the "Original" or could it also be one of their Breezeblock mixes......(and if not could someone post those 2 BB mp3s perhaps...hmmm?!?;) )

I have this "Live @ Home 7/11/01" over 3 mp3s… really lovely stuff, and they even threw in some Underworld, which pleasantly surprised me. Rez to be exact.

I've heard the album has been so huge in Australia that they really don't need to make another one, like Oasis with their Whats the Story, Morning Glory?

In fact I created some songs imitating their style. It takes forever… maybe that's cause for the delay of their new album? aahh well we're just gonna have to waiiittttt....

one of the best albums to play at parties and summer bar-b-q's, even friends who say things about dance like 'turn this rubbish off, sounds like a dalek having an eplitic fit' dig the avalanches

Gimix shares a few tracks with SILY, but it's a different beast entirely.

I think I'm the opposite of most of you guys, I just can't listen to that record anymore. It soundtracked one or two massive summers for me, though, so very fond memories of it :)

Actually, I can't really listen to it, because my world revolved around it for at least a year, but I know that someday (soon) it's going to come back and hit me again in a big way. I'm looking forward to it.

Wow! This is totally what I have been looking for! This is what I thought the Primal Scream's Screamadelica would be like, but it wasn't (I'm not saying that album sucks because it rocks).

Anyway, personal favourites at the moment are "Since I Left You", "RADIO" (!!!) and Frontier Psychiatrist (that's just pure fun!).

The album was really popular in Australia but was certainly not as big as Oasis. The Avalanches did not expect it to take off they way it did and had not contemplated the mess they would be in with sample clearance and legal issues. In the end, and after much scurrying by record company legal teams the got evrything cleared for international release, however it did mean that a lot of the money was paid out to other artists and copyright holders.

I recently heard an interview with the guys and they said that the album was well under way and should see an '06 release.

They are also really friendly guys. We played a gig with Dexter and he was a great guy, shared some great stories.

i am currently listening to this album and it is still rocking my world.

i think i might even say that this is indeed my favourite album of all time. it brings me to tears, it makes me laugh, it makes me dance, shake, raise my glasses and spill my drinks. it's been eight years, but i don't think there has been anything near as good as this (which means a lot considering the 1000+ albums i heard in the last couple of years).

I do think there's an incredibly nice vibe on the album, that really makes me long for summer. But whenever I scroll through my musiclist (on my mp3 player as well), I usually skip The Avalanches. Maybe this changes in summer, but I just can't listen to it at all times.

Does anyone get the vision of an American barbeque party in a big garden of a big house, when listening to this album?
