Am i the only person who absolutely loves Ess Gee?

Ess Gee is one of the most beautiful Underworld songs i have ever heard. The Guitar is simply brilliant work and mellow background tones. Only a guitar genius could create something like this, music genius even.

But alas, most of the community absolutely hates this song.

Do i stand alone?

no, i like every song on 'a hundred days off', but if i had to vote one off, it'd be trim (but i voted for ess gee in the survivor cos i'm trying to predict the votes or something.)

Ess Gee is a beautiful thing, as is everything U/W releases....

ok - I'll say it.. I actually like Ess Gee

I think it's better than Trim, and I listen to it more often than the album version of Twist even! Is it the best on AHDO? No... that spot goes for Leutin.

Ess Gee would work better as part of a longer work. As is, it is very bare and unfinished...at least in terms of Underworld songs.

the album version of twist? is there another version?

Re: Am i the only person who absolutely loves Ess Gee?

well... I mean album version vs live

I actually really don't care much for Twist on AHDO, but when they play it live, Karl seems to consistantly add guitar and Rick adds some added sirens and bits of percussion.

Personally, on the album... I burned out on it pretty quick, and for me - I could only really think of it as a more "upbeat version of Banstyle" - but as a live entity, it feels more legitimate as its own song - if that makes any sense

I'm with you, Caprice. I love Ess Gee. I understand others' criticism of the song, but as far as I'm concerned there are times in which it's the perfect song to listen to. Such warm guitar tones, layers of loverly melody make me feel beautiful things. These are good vibes. :)

Yeah, count me in. I can't say it's my favourite Underworld song or anything, but I always enjoy it when I listen to the album. I find it much, much better and more effective than "Twist," "Sola Sistim," and "Little Speaker." It's similarly laid-back, but it is pretty and concise, whereas those other tracks just go on and on. And it's also pretty atypical for Underworld. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded like the best Aphex Twin track in over seven years.

I like the "sound" of the guitar but the melody just really doesn't grab me. Could've been done much more with the sweet sounding sound. I must say that the very last note of Ess Gee makes the waiting for the next track much more exciting.

well its not a matter of hate, you have to think of it as people loving other stuff more...

i mean, is Ess Gee you're absolutely favoruite UW song...?

if not then you'd vote it off before you're favoruite...simple as that, if you like something least doesn't necessarily mean you hate it...

i'd certainly not say i hate ess gee, but i really don't like it anyway as much as so many other songs....some people may well hate it, but I think, its just comparissons against other songs...and it comes off worse.

Personally, i believe that there is a hard banging fanbase, who love the pumping dance tunes, and a soft more chilled fan base who prefer the mellower aspects of UW's sound...

i like both (but not equally, and i think most people are like that), i'd always go for the banging dance floor friendly sounds, as opposed to the quieter tunage, as that's kinda where i think UW started out...BS, Moaner, KOS, PU, TMO that kind of thing, but then again i can totally listen to the quieter UW moments as well, depends on my mood :)

Mmm... perhaps you should take it like "most of the community likes this song a bit less than the others"?...

hehe... or even "some of the community likes this song a bit less than some of the other songs" :D

It's alright... and I reckon it suits ADHO - especially with Trim. There are much worse UW tracks than Ess Gee.

i have a feeling that this could be the direction that the film score with g.jared that rick anf karl are working on will take?

In my opinion, when they started out they were doing a very creative and original combination of "banging dance floor friendly sounds" and more melodic styles, as opposed to only doing one or the other in any given track. Consider "Jam Scraper," for instance. It starts out slow and melancholy, then it gradually builds up to an awesome techno breakdown, and then it winds down to the same sort of slow contemplative feeling. Same with "Why Why Why?" On the other hand, "Dark Train" starts out minimalist but then adds the great keyboard melody. That was what I liked about them, they didn't just make dancefloor tunes or "chill-out" tunes or whatever, they made tracks that had forward movement and combined different feels.

Ess Gee is a shit, filler track. Karl plucks randomly at a guitar and records it and you guys eat it up. I could make the same song with my feet.

The poll proves just how hated this song is. Shame on Underworld! Shaaammmmeee!

I hope that was sarcasm. Randomly plucking a guitar would never sound this nice. Ask anyone who has picked up a guitar in their life... it's much harder than it looks. Also, the tone is quite choice. I've been playing guitar for over 10 years and would love to be able to get my amp to sound so smooth.

Maybe you just have talented feet. :)

And people voted for this over Monkey Wink in Matt's Most Hated?

Shame on them. Gah.

Re: Am i the only person who absolutely loves Ess Gee?

Well it's true I dont play guitar, it might be why I dont appriciate the random plucking. No really though it just sounds like he's tuning his guitar.. like he was tuning it and it got recorded by mistake and Rick DARED him to put it on the album.

bavarianbeer 02-10-2006 05:09 PM

Re: Am i the only person who absolutely loves Ess Gee?

Ah, come on. You can't really make the same thing by randomly plucking on your guitar, there'd be no harmony. "Ess Gee" really does sound pretty.
