back to life, back to underworld
...ahem.
just downloaded the japan live gigs. having been a big underworld fan in the past i've skimmed through the gigs, i'm a bit underwhelmed by the new material. don't get me wrong, the older stuff sounds fantastic but the new stuff is a bit too wibbly, akin to the fillers on the stiti/bf singles... can anyone point out what should be given a second (third/fouth/fifth) chance in terms of the new stuff. and why i should bother...? Dave (not dace, big stubby fingers and wee keyboards)... |
Re: back to life, back to underworld
eh? japan sets available for download now?

ftp site hosting them without too much trouble. back to the question. worth persisting with the new stuff? discuss... |
Re: back to life, back to underworld
well the RiverRun Project seems to be hit or miss with people on here. but there are definitely a few gems in there.
ive really grown to love JAL to Tokyo, and Back in the Fears (live) and have always had a soft spot for Luetin, Two Months Off and Twist (live especially) |

pretty good too. not as good as the pre-album version from, er, glastonbury 1998 but pretty dammed good nevertheless. think i'll maybe just chop the gig down to an 80mind cd... (btw, anybody know how i can change my name from 'dace' to 'dave'? anyway, doughnuts...) |
Re: back to life, back to underworld
I think Dace Doughnut sounds better than Dave! :)
As regards the new stuff, I think it is important to hear it how the band have chosen to present it by listening to (and, dare I say it, buying :p ) the EPs rather than just going by the snippets in the live gigs. This would give you a better sense of what they are doing now. Do bear in mind also that they have something like 180 new pieces of music, the sum total of which I sincerely hope we get to hear. BTW - it's Wherever I Lay My Hat. ;) |
Re: back to life, back to underworld
well there have been quite a few new tracks in the liveshow and i don't really know all the names. Back in the Fears is just wonderful, and there are a few cool techno-ish "tracks" that seem to be popping up, like Morococcan Meatballs (worst title ever? ;)), Aqua Funk...
Yard Beat is cool because it just has this wicked breakbeat and probably the deepest sub-bassline ever. Then there's that breakbeat track that they've played a few times mixing into Jumbo that sounds very cool, and of course You Do Sribble is pretty big. As for the Riverrrun project, i don't really care much for Lovely Broken Thing but Pizza for Eggs has some really cool stuff on it. Definitely looking forward to the new one. |

I agree with others...seems hard to judge the new stuff from the live performances...There are some definite gems on each of the RR releases. |
Re: back to life, back to underworld
Personally, i'd suggest waiting for the full vinyl (and / or cd) releases of the best tracks off the River Run Project, most of the tracks that make up P4E & LBT are much longer in their full edits, Play Pig, Peggy Sussed and JAL to Tokyo are really great as longer pieces (you get the full feel of the tracks, rather than snippets mixed together with slower stuff) and these full versions come with some great remixes, although i've not heard the Peggy Sussed mixes by Pete Heller yet, i know they will rock...
as one long section i think Pizza and Lovely can be a bit drawn out, but as individual tracks they have their moments and this i why i'd say hold out until the best ones are released in their entirity...which is gonna happen i've bought the downloads, obvioulsy because i'm a bit of a fan ( ;) ) but if thats not you're bag then hold out and catch the vinyl (or cd single) releases - they will restore your faith that these are not mere fillers.... |

I think the bigger fans of Beaucoup Fish will tend not to favor the RRP. The sounds are more akin to STITI and AHDO...imho, of course. |

i like what they have done with these downloads, but sometimes i just want to hear the original version in its entirity APFC is 19:43 minutes long in its entirity, whereas its 8:05 on P4E Back in the Fears is 11:39 when played on Tokyo CD, and is only 2:15 on P4E Food a Ready is about the same length on both Itunes version & P4E JAL to Tokyo is much better mixed up by Paul Woolford, at 7:54 minutes long (there is a 9 minute mix also), but the LBT version is just 5:37... I know of a version of Peggy Sussed at 7:31 long, which is 4 minutes longer than the 3:21 minute P4E version The two Pig and Dan mixes of Play Pig are about 8 minutes long, its only 2:46 on P4E, i think the original must be a longer track... i'd certainly recommend downloading the original pieces, but i'd also recommend waiting for the 12" releases, we'll see how good the original versions are (hoping that they are on the remix 12"'s and not just the remixes...) |

also, i do have a CD-R of JAL to Tokyo, that i won from ebay, with two Paul Woolford mixes on it, which indicates some kind of release... also i know a man who knows some stuff who keeps me informed... ;) also we know of the following remixes in the pipeline (or already finished), which i suspect are scheduled for release, i assume, otherwise why ask (& pay remixers) to remix yer stuff?: Peggy Sussed - Pete Heller Mixes (Vox & Dub) Play Pig - Pig and Dan Mixes (Mix 1 & Mix 2) JAL to Tokyo - Paul Woolford Mixes (Vox & Dub) plus Rhobag Wruhme Remixes and Nic Fanucilli Remixes? i hope that they will be released soon, but the promos must be in very short supply as i've seen none on ebay, and the one i won was a CD-R (one of 25 copies) i suspect that they have been sent to the very most exclusive DJs only.... |
