Selling England By The Pound or The Joshua Tree?

Two totally unrelated albums, one of the prog movement, one of the punk movement. Which will win? I have no idea. But Selling England is better.

Well, being an age-old (with emphasis on the age ;) ) Genesis fan, there is no contest here.

Genesis. Everything they did from 1970 - 1981 beats the pants off anything in U2's catalog. In the 80's and 90's, it's more a toss-up!:p

a. it's pissing annoying sitting here at a mac, hitting quick reply, and having the last message quoted.

b. dont know either album that well; but as joshua tree doesn't feature phil collins, it gets my vote :D

Haven't heard that Genesis album, but I REALLY REALLY love The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and they get all my respect. Anyways, The Joshua Tree is almost a perfect album, if it wasn't for some of the final tracks that make the whole lose a bit of consistency.... The first 5 tracks are a pure messianic rock delight.

I don't seem to remember there being a category here marked "both shite" when I did this poll earlier. And none of the 4 people who think these are "both shite" seem to have qualified their choice.

Unless of course there has been some subsequent interference. And the use of the term "shite" tends to lead one to suspect certain English blokes. ;)

Haven't heard the Genesis album, but I used to listen to Joshua Tree obsessively as an early teen, so for nostalgia reasons alone it gets my vote.

someone added the both shite option & changed the votes so it was 5-5-5. it looks like it was about 7 to 3.

Apologies for adding the "both shite" option. That was a drunken me :o. However, I can assure you I did not change the votes. People have voted for "both shite"!

i wonder how many have actually heard "Selling England By the Pound". If you voted shite because you hate Phil Collins, check yer rock history...Genesis was a very different band in 1973. ;) And even if Bono gets yer goat, i don't think i've ever heard "Joshua Tree" described as poopy, even by nonfans. :p

I know my rock history and ive never been a fan of Genesis in any shape or form, or of any of the solo stuff or derivative groups including Peter Gabriel. Never liked stuff like Nursery Crime (possibly one of the worst album covers ever) or Lamb Lies Down on Broadway either. As for U2, their 1980s output is pompous rubbish. For a few albums from Achtung Baby onwards they started to make better music, much more dance oriented and thats the period I prefer.

Bryantm3, while i'm right with you on the prog-era Genesis love, i fear it's a lost cause around here. U2, or at least Bono, also take their share of lumps.

Now, if either collaborated with UW, we'd have ourselves a debate! Though, both U2 and Genesis have worked with Brian Eno, so the connection's not that distant;)
