Our Own Anthology
Well we had Anthology, but there were mainly singles.
Think about what you would like to see on Anthology 92/02, from other material such as B sides, album tracks or non album tracks. I want to see your oppinion some c`mon guys;) 1# Spoonman 2# Juanita/Kiteless |
Re: Our Own Anthology
well, its all subjective. everyone's will be different. what raj/negative1 did was to create Anthology2 which created a set of tunes from the early non-album stuff. I think I have the full tracklisting somewhere. I wish he would get his ass back on these forums.

Re: Our Own Anthology

record one 1 mother earth fm mix 2. the hump 3. the hump groove w/o a doubt 4. bigmouth 5. eclipse 6. dirty 7. minneapolis/airwaves 8. spikee 9. dogman go woof 10. rez 11. why why why thing 2 1. dark train 2. dark hard 2. spoon deep 3. thing in a book 4. burts 5. oich oich 6. cherry pie 7. mosaic 8. puppies 9. some other stuff from that time period disc three 1. that one b side from beaucoup fish 2. headset 3. that other b side from a hundred days off 4. those other ones 5. ansum cd 4 some stuff bootlegged, some stuff demo, new, etc |
Re: Our Own Anthology
I would add Dirty Guitar and the other Cowgirl and Pearl's Girl remixes (though maybe you don't want remixes) and that would be almost everything. The Beaucoup B-side is Please Help Me, an excellent track.
I like the Anthology in general, though I think Juanita would be great addition. |

it did have some stipulations, for example...although i love Spoonman, there was pretty much no point putting it on an Anthology 2, because everyone had it and the basis behind Anthology 2 was to collect and collate (the same word?) all the tracks that were much harder to find and -1 and myself did come up with over 80+ tracks spread over 5 discs...it was originally 4, then we created the 2003 remixes edits disc, which were basically shorter versions of the remixes of Born Slippy that were already available...the edits were promo only... 'our' original Anthology 2 included rare and hard to get tracks that most normal people wouldn't have, so that ruled out anything that had been on commercial release be it single, or album , so spoonman, although lovely and deserving of say more than an album placing could be found and heard by anyone... for example it included the full length version of why why why, the 'other' mix of Mother Earth & mixes of the Hump, plus the Long version of Rowla, and the Confusion the Waitress remix, as well as shorter edits of tracks, available in odd places on compilation albums...like the Spikee Edit... if i can also track down the listing i will share it with you guys... my response in -1 style
Of the ones I didnt have of this list I managed to track down on mp3. Some are so rare that they are limited to 25 to 100 copies each (or in the case of Confusion The Waitress remix, 1 or 2 ;). I'll have to see what happened to them all. Might be an idea to resurrect this for myself. Personal project. I think I'm still missing 2 or 3 tracks. later stimpEE |

Re: Our Own Anthology
Well, I've got a list that I always post in threads like this, so here it is. This is my proposal for a two-disc B-sides/rarities compilation mirroring Anthology. Sure, it doesn't contain absolutely everything they ever released, but I think it's got most of the best parts. The first disc would be especially awesome; I burned myself a copy of it, and I listen to it just as often as any of their other albums.
Disc 1: 1. Eclipse 2. Minneapolis 3. Minneapolis (Airwaves) 4. ME (FM) 5. The Hump (Wild Beasts) 6. MMM Skyscraper I Love You (Jam Scraper) 7. Why Why Why? 8. Dirty Guitar 9. Dark Hard Disc 2: 1. Most 'Ospitable 2. Born Slippy (original) 3. Deep Pan 4. Cherry Pie 5. Oich Oich 6. Puppies 7. Oh 8. Please Help Me 9. Tiny Clicks 10. Like A Swimmer 11. Born Slippy NUXX 2003 |

Found this recently on Amazon.com. Gives a nice overview of the various Underworld rarities and B sides, and why they should go on a 2nd Anthology...

well, now that things are settling down for me..
yes, i did come across the discs that matt sent me........ now, i just have to dig up all those other tracks, (vinyl/cd/etc)... i'm hoping this could be the year to finally make all these projects work out.. not to sound too envious, but i really wonder how people make it into the music industry to work on these projects..i know if i ever got offered a job doing these kind of things, i would seriously consider it.. anyways....thanks for keeping the thoughts alive.. now to make it a reality.. later -1 |

i'm sure there's a lot more legal and political issues that are involved... when you do a freelance or fan job, you don't have to worry about royalties or other things that 'legal' compilations have.. on the other hand, there have several really good boxsets that have come out that i consider very well done, the cure rarities, big country boxsets, bjork boxsets, echo and the bunnymen boxsets, duran duran, and depeche mode, and many other ones....so it can be done...its mostly about commercial viability.. i remember when the uw anthology came out, and i think (was it?) steve hall, or someone else from jbo posted some messages here.. and said basically the same thing, that they really couldn't have these 'ultimate' compilations because it wasn't financially viable.. i think other countries (ie japan, and certain asian ones) get special tracks/extras because the market over there is very different to the one in the US/UK.....i don't think thats going to change anytime soon either.. the one outlet that seems to be gaining momentum (fortunately/unfortunately) is the digital download area (ie itunes etc)...and mabye even via underworlds own website.....however there is some dissatisfaction with either the quality of the encodings or the lack of a hard copy of the art, and the physical medium of the cd.....if they were to offer old/rare tracks for US$0.99 they could probably find an audience.....i know i've just started to download some tracks that are unfortunately digital only (abc / new order / bt)...but its either that or not get them at all, or pay for an extremely over-priced promo cd on ebay.... not to many choices out there that will make everyone happy yet.. i wonder, matt, how you feel about the rise of digital only tracks, and how this impacts collecting? (or maybe that topics been done to death in some other thread..) later -1 |

i paid a heavy sum for a 2 track promo of JAL to Tokyo, which was extremely limited (to 25 copies), which, in reality, must have cost about £0.10p to make, and the guy selling it didn't pay for it either, so if this is the way collecting's going to be because of digital music its going to become harder and 'unfair' and i'm not going to like it... i'm still holding out for the commercial releases of the latest UW music via record and cd, which have been mooted, but as digital takes off, even more so this year, labels and artists won't need to send out promo's or even release stuff in 'hard form' any more...this is kinda a long topic for another thread really... i find it a bit rough when they do release 'download only' tunes, such as the Pete Heller remixes of Jetstream, and then find out that they are to be either released commercially outside of the country hosting the download site, or as incentive tracks on promo's given to dj's....the whole point of excluisve downloads should be that thats the only place you are going to get it...how hard is it for a dj to copy it to a cdr and play it from that...??? mmm...i'll be back later to finish this post off ;) |
[reply] -> _Re: Our Own Anthology_
i wanted to move this discussion
to another thread..but i'm not sure where it should go... if you want to start another one, please do.. i just wanted to note that, i think there will always be promos, either vinyl or cd-r made, just because i dont know what percentage of djs in clubs use laptops/mp3 files only.. in fact if anything, i think i've seen a resurgence in vinyl releases, judging from all the vinyl on releases and limited editions.. some examples of mixed releases: new order - waiting for the sirens call 3x7" exclusive, although many of the mixes are on promo cds new order - guilt is a useless emotion (download only in the US)..although there are cd promos with all the mixes depeche mode - almost all of their singles off the last album have several promo vinyl and cds also abc - re-released all their old 'neutron' label albums with extra tracks, and also as downloads...one album, 'abracadabra' is digital only, and has several digital only extras also... i'm sure there a lot more current groups that have done this also, i've only tried to keep with the older groups that i used to listen to.. i think that labels are still experimenting with the formats and trying to see which methods are easiest to use, and profitable. and yes, it does create quite a headache for fans and collectors.. later -1 |
Re: Our Own Anthology
oh, and one more thing, another obvious issue,
that is certainly not the fault of the labels.. many releases are geared towards certain markets, so the release dates will be different for different countries.... so if new mixes of a song are commissioned for a different country, of course when it first came out, those people lose out on getting it... i think thats always been the case.. (remember the 'king of snake' promos that came out before 'beacoup fish' was released).. and then later when it was re-released, there were many more mixes ...and even the italian only ones.. later -1 |

It was called Why Why Why on Volume 8 i think (which i dont have), then the Wasted Compilation came out (which I have) and on the card sleeve it states Change and on the cd case but in the book it states Why Why Why.

Re: Our Own Anthology
On Volume 8 it is:
back of booklet Underworld - Why Why Why? version Track details on last page Underworld - Why Why Why? (5.15) page 36 in booklet Underworld - Why Why Why? Remix of track from limited promo 12-inch produced by underworld engineered by Steve Dubb at Da Da Studios, Romford |

Anyway, it's an ace track with a lovely build-up. Still, i think one or the other version (8 min or 12 min) is sufficient for the Anthology. Saving that time could allow for another rare track to get in! Holden |
Re: Our Own Anthology
Well i've been listening to all three versions and can't make head or tail of it... ;)
As far as i can tell the 8 minute version starts and ends the same way as the 12 minute version (the original 12" one), so is edited somewhere in the middle - approximately 6:00 in the track, the style changes slightly and becomes more swqelchy - so whoever edited it down just chopped 4 minutes from between 6-10 minutes in the track - other than that its no different The 5 minute 'remix' is also no different as far as i can tell, and just fades earlier in the track - so calling it a remix or version is not strictly true.. The only explanation i can give for the 'Change' text typo is that the track uses what sounds like a 'Change' sample in it at the begining and may well have been scheduled to be called that - or that the 'Wasted' compilers listened to it put 'Change' on the back of the case, realised their mistake and forgot to alter the cover but made changes to the rest of the CD... Anyway, anyone wanting a good remix of why why why, without forking out for the original, you should check out Futureshock's The Question which was basically a 'new' mix and you'd be foolled into thinking that it was an offical Underworld remix why oh why oh why? |
Re: Our Own Anthology
agreed, i think a different track would be better
here...now to go find one! since they're both on cd...its probably better to put something else on there.. hmmm...thanks for the discussion.... how about 'second hand' which is an edit of 'thing in a book' (even though i have that later)..... the thing is, its hard to find both of these tracks without buying the compilations that they come on.. so it's really a toss up. later -1 |

Re: Our Own Anthology
Just an interesting sidebar. I was listening to Man Loop today, and it seems to be closer in lineage to Second Hand than it is to Thing in a Book. It's like a long edit of Second Hand, rather than a short edit of Thing in a Book. Which is nice, because I think I prefer Second Hand.

Is there any release that is not too expensive that has Minneapolis Airwaves on it? I'm sure I can't find something cheap for it, but I should ask. I'd like a higher quality version of it. I have it, but it is a 'okay' quality MP3; nothing all that good.
