British Bands
They are popping up all over the place and getting alot of media attention.
For example: Arctic Monkeys Maximo Park The Futureheads Kaiser Chiefs The Editors Bloc Party The Young Knives Franz Ferdinand The Rakes I think if you pick two artists here you will be satisfied. (my pick would be Bloc Party and The Editors) Is a new band like Arctic Monkeys who are topping the charts really necessary? Cause I think they are just playing the same old shit. Imo the Arctic Monkeys are just a rockier Franz Ferdinand with some better lyrics. Whats up with this world who keep asking for the same music!? Is this going to last or is it just a phase? PS: If you really want to be challenged check out british rock bands Reuben, Engerica and Million Dead (who recently split up :(). |
Re: British Bands
Out of that lot I'll - predictably - plump for Maximo Park. Best of the bunch.
I didn't know Million Dead split up... |
Re: British Bands
I'll say Maximo Park to, only coz im biased and have followed them since they were unsigned.
The Harrisons 65 Days Of Static The Bubble Project There all ace but not in the mainstream, its a shame that the new Doves and Elbow albums both got ignore this year. |

Re: British Bands
I haven't heard the new 65dos album but the first one was great (although I don't listen to it that much now, come to think of it). Might need to get a listen to the new one...

Re: British Bands
Arctic Monkeys are the best of the bunch there and they havent even released an album yet. Very witty lyrics, great riffs and are miles better than Maximo Park or Franz Ferdinand. Bloc Party and The Editors are good tho and they use "Munich" on Match Of The Day :)
Check out Black Wire too, they have a great debut album out. A band I like but seem to have sank without trace recently are South, though they are more Stone Roses/Charlatans influenced than this current batch who've been listening to too many PiL/Gang Of Four/Joy Division records. To anyone into these bands, checking out the above 3 bands would be a great idea. Gang Of Four: Solid Gold/Entertainment Joy Division: Permanent Public Image Limited: Public Image Limited/Second Edition also Wire: Pink Flag/Chairs Missing Maybe they arent as polished as the current crop, but that gives them more edge and this post-punkfunk certainly didnt get the attention it deserved at the time. |
Re: British Bands
I don't know if they are British bands, but I REALLY like Jon Bon Jovi and the Darkness.

Come on man, Jon Bon Jovi is just so cool. They make pure rockmusic, the best I've ever heard and they're always keeping it real.

Stop it, Leon. You're frightening me now. Really you are! For my part, I think Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party are my particular faves atm. A bit tired of Franz Ferdinand now - haven't bought their new album. For some reason I can't quite fathom, Kaiser Chiefs get on my... er... nerves, I think maybe cos they seem to be trying so hard to sound like The Jam and The Clash and other bands from the 80s? Maybe I am doing them a disservice. |

I know a lot of people have trouble noticing melodies, rhythms, different performances, hooks and so on, and that style seems to be far, far more important a matter to judge a band by these days, but somebody might think Franz Ferdinand sound cool but simply doesn't like the songs themselves, and then listen to the Arctic Monkeys and realise this is what they were after from Franz. Nice tunes and stuff. Just a thought. |
Re: British Bands
I really like Kaiser Chiefs.... and didn't Franz Ferdinand say their music purpose was to make girls shake their booty?
I ain't no girl but I do. |

with regard to the original post, kaisers singles are OK not something i'd buy and didn't think much of them when i saw em live, same with maximo park didn't rate them live but appply some pressure is a quality track. franz ferdinand were quality live, but the new stuff doesn't do much for me. futureheads good live, and hounds of love is one of my singles of the year. arctic monkeys, loads of hype, waiting for album before judging them on two singles, which i liked. saw the rakes on jools and the 22 grand job is catchy and annoying at the same time. as i've said on here many times before i love bloc party, haven't listened to an album as much as i've listened to silent alarm since i listened to doolittle so much i had to buy it again cos the cd went funny. brilliant live band too, can't wait to hear the new stuff and see how they progress |
Re: British Bands
my two penn'orth :
bloc party's record is great. not a duff song on it, and So Here We Are is just gorgeous. not too fussed either way about maximo park i really like editors before i heard their album, which is a bit of a let down. the singles are pretty good, (especially munich) but there's little else of note on the entire album. kaiser chiefs were alright for about 10 minutes at the end of 2004. they have since got more and more boring franz ferdinand never really did it for me arctic monkeys' first single was ace. dancefloor is ok. the hype'll crush 'em. there's no way their debut album can live up to the expectations that have been built up around them. plus it's only a matter of time before the NME backlash - oh!, the fickle old NME. nine black alps have some fantastic songs, but the album was a bit of a letdown. bon jovi are the best british band evar. i quite like what i've heard of morning runner so far, but it hasn't been very much so the jury's still out. doves album was pretty mediocre as far as i remember though i've not listened in a while. elbow record is still growing on me. there's some fantastic songs in the first half of the record, as well as a couple of dull ones, and the second half keeps on revealing little gems the more i listen. ace. + Forget Myself is a fantastic single. |
