Denver Luna single release - October 18, 2023
 

So is Underworld planning on dropping these new songs as individual singles ? Or are they waiting to release them all together via new album ? (possibly a Drift Series 2 ?)

It may be that they don't even know, given the one interview we've heard lately right before The Colour Red. Seems like most bands have forgotten how to communicate or release things in any clear kind of way post-pandemic, or even use the established tools they already have and know very well. I'm looking toward Depeche Mode's very recent album cycle, but it's rampant now, like everyone forgot how to do the regular things they used to do.

I'm all for shaking up the status quo, but that should involve focused effort like Drift demonstrated so well. Things lately just feel inept (like not even linking The Colour Red graphic on their homepage to anything or adding any info to the News section for the release - you know, basic stuff). :/

Yeah - funny that I seem to be the negative one lately about all this. ;)

Just feels odd to me for a group that used to be so good at communication and very involved to not have much idea where this is going. Obviously was very spoiled by Drift.

As mentioned, this is a frustration started from other corners of the music industry, just disappointed to also feel it from the one I care about most.

Mainly just anxious to hear clear versions of the other three new songs, which seem like some of the best/most epic vocally they have done in a long time.

I feel like "And the Color Red" was a soft open of sorts. not directly the single they'll make the most fuss about, but the "back again" lead in before something with more presence to it busts through the door. is that Denver Luna? Strawberry Hotel? Gene Pool? Maybe the crowd response from the handful of gigs will decide that. I saw two of them live and they were both massive "beautiful burnout" types in different ways.

My only complaint, and where I feel they're definitely following the traditional hype schedule, is that it's not coming fast enough. If not a new single, maybe some dates? Something. I had Red on repeat for a week after it was out. I Am Red E.

Well, on insta we have 3 new clips from cochella and RAH, with the wording “if u know u know”. Maybe I’m missing something but maybe it’s a hint. ��

Does anyone have any guesses as when we might see anything new (Denver Luna or Strawberry Hotel would be particularly good)? The only thing I can guess at is "sometime between October and end of the year", because after 30th September they don't have any more dates listed then until 03/24 in Amsterdam. I know it's a very vague question but a 5+ month gap after a single is long for any band, particularly when they're playing other stuff in the interim anyway.

Wow, that is cool. Love the fact that you can hear both Rick and Karl singing in the short video on Insta (and live as well) . Surely a version with the pounding drums will follow later on.

I have to laugh sometimes.
Their store/PR team have been trying to carve a path through the trends with all their youths wearing born slippy shirts or whatever.
While their creative decisions keep eschewing the obvious thing in favor of baffling decisions.
You play a barn burner out live and the release is what..? An accapella? After this long without another single. This is the fucking desert, honey. We are PARCHED.

New tune, thank you R&K, and maybe more to come soon?
The Acapella and all the vocoding layers is beautiful, lots to appreciate in the power and emotiveness of voice.
Vox only version makes it easy for producers to work a remix? ( I guess that could be a negative as well, as you can literally slap the vocals over any track...could be a mess, but also could yield interesting experiments and versions).
Finally, I have to hope there will be an expanded release with the live version, maybe some remixes? Hope is a good thing...

alright I'm less drunk now. of course it's gorgeous, teaser as it is, obviously more is coming. In my defense I was hyped all week, finding live bootlegs to tide me over. I was taken to the mountain and left at base camp!

I think the oddest thing about the release is the near silence from the band. Not even an email announcement. What are these releases? Prelude to an album, Drift 2, or?? 🦗🦗🦗

can't help but feel some of the replies are nuts tbh.
personally I love this drop. i mean, did anyone ever, ever suspect UW would release an acapella track?
total respect to R&K for being able to continually surprise.
there are threads on here dissecting karls lyrics. here is a huge opportunity to have no ambiguity about the lyrics.
in addition, this is very clearly (i hope) a teaser of much more to come. indeed i felt similar about "and the colour red", because like the first appleshine snippet we heard, it suggests really strongly to me that it is part of a bigger whole.

I have only 1 grumble, and that is we continue to wait for drift 2. Even though I know it will be worth the wait I want it now, greedy so and so that I am. I can't wait to hear gene pool again, as well as the full version of denver luna.

I mean, I think we can all agree... one of the biggest mistakes UW ever did was to release "Jumbo" instead of "Skym" as the second single off of Beaucoup Fish, and it's great to see that they've finally learned that lesson. [jk]

But seriously though, yes ... this is a cool acapella "track", but I think they're kind of undercutting themselves even by making the distinction of labeling it "acapella", instead of just releasing it as "Denver Luna"... like the distinction of "track" vs "song" is important, especially if "Denver Luna" is a single.

Having said all of that - this release is very interesting, I enjoy the track, and I'm excited to hear more (but I'm not sure if this is a single I'm going to be listening to multiple times, like I did with say... 'Dune' or 'Another Silent Way')

I think my issue was that after hearing this live I was SO excited to hear a produced track - and then was surprised to find its the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. Is it good? yup! Will I listen to this outside the context of an album? Nope!

but they have plenty of tracks like this. I listen to Underworld daily - for decades - but I've never once put on Skym to just hear that one track. I love it in the context of the album, but not as a standalone track. There are some I downright skip everytime; I'm looking at you Ess Gee and Boy Boy Boy.

So whatever. I'm glad they do what they do... just bummed it wasnt the one I was hoping for this particular time.

We did not have to wait too long :) I guess the acapella was part of a build up to the full release. Maybe this will have a merch drop with it. Given that the original posts for the acapella were titled 'denver luna' (without acapella) I wonder if there was a late change of plan. Anyway, very excited for next week.
