Okay already...now enough with the solo stuff...get it together!
Although both are great diversions...neither Edgeland or Trance can touch stuff like 'DIS:

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
I need to see Underworld live at least one more time before it's too late....I really hope they tour close to where I live at some point. It sucks being in the States for good music.

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Oh me, oh my, it is 2013.
I came to love Underworld around 2001-02. Lots of things have changed since then, as right they should. I have anticipated and endured the release of AHDO, OWB and Barking. I watched the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics and listened to the Frankenstein score. I have Karl Hyde's "Edgeland" on CD. Working on Rick's "Trance". Suffice it to say, this is not 2002. Or '03. It's '13. Personally, i am a bit bummed that times have changed, i've hit my mid 30's, and UW have taken to a hiatus of sorts, though the solo output has been tremendous. But that's just me. And if we get a new UW record in a few years, i will count myself lucky. Lucky for having learned of the band in the first place, for having soaked in their back catalog, for being fanatical about their output for a decade or more, seeing them live once (NYC, 2007), and enjoying the ride...hopefully for many years. holden/ brian P.S. A couple years ago, i asked a question that was answered on an Underworld radio show: "Will Underworld continue with different people?" Karl said yes. Rick called me lovely. It was a fine day. I think Barking came close to spirit of the Q. Naturally, i wish i was a full fledged member, laboring alongside R&K&D... but hey- output is output! I dream of more.... |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
wouldn't it be fascinating if underworld just continued on, sort of like a symphony or vocal group, with members changing in and out for decades?
i got into UW in 2003 with AHDO, it's weird, now i don't ever listen to that one. it's 92-97 for me all the way, and occasionally a touch of the riverrun. |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
I dunno, a lot of what I love about this band is the bond and friendship between R&K. I LOVE watching the 2010 KCRW set cause they're both slightly under the weather and you just get to watch two old friends do their thing together and come up smiling and grinning at the end. It's a beautiful and wonderful thing to me and I'd miss it quite a bit with others in there.

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Patience, friend! They'll drop the melody back into the beat when it is good and ripe! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1JF1W_i0-I
I figure this recent quiet can only mean they're working on something... *turns out it's another one off mixed-media project none of us will ever partake in* |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
One of them pairing up with a boring producer and the other doing sitcom slavery doesn't count...zzzz RIP UW 1980-2014

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Boring producer or not this collaboration seems quite interesting. No harm in trying something new sometime.

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
I'll hold off the squinty eyed judgement until I've had a chance to listen to it, but everything I've heard that was Eno produced has been slow and boring so this is gonna be like Edgeland on downers I imagine.

Calm it down seems to be his speciality,
not that bad these days (without being sarcastic). But I miss U/W too and still wonder what happened every time I listen to these interviews. I hope things changing for the better so let's see what´s up this road. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UY5jEJS0fg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXGCWhKrnrE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPbeFrdn8XI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f3GUeksbQM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDmOMgZpCLg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXFe9LqOV0s |

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Deleted all my digital copies of all UW music...about to trashcan all physical discs. It has been a learning experience to be a follower of a talented band such as Underworld - but for now I feel I have truly and fully outgrown my need for most secular music I once enjoyed...UW included.
1 Corinthians 13 1If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,b but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. |

um what?

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
To get back on to topics people (aside from the trollgoose) care about, karl mentioned new UW writing in yesterdays diary that was posted today! Hoorah! The light at the end of the tunnel is visible!

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
What do y'all reckon? Announcement by end of year and album early next? Maybe some live shows to work some of the new material out? In the States? With 3 hour sets structured like the Experimental Sound Field with Karl's band mates and Eno? </pipe dream>
|
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Just my thoughts and preferences, not tied to any announcement:
"Barking" was probably UW's most populist album of the mkii/iii era, and though many of the collaborative productions are excellent, it doesn't always seem a "true"Underworld album for me. Then there are tracks like "Downpipe" that they played all the time live - how much of the production was UW and how much Knight and Ramirez? Add to that the structured setlist for live shows, and it all seemed a bit boring - certainly not the excitement of previous tours' evolving jams, or even the experimental/ambient album tracks. Since then, the collaborations have continued - Danny Boyle, Brian Eno, Leo Abrahams, tech. folks at VW. My hope is that Rick and Karl get together and do what they do best, just the two of them. At this point in their career, they can really do whatever they want, and who knows, it may be so different that it changes the face of electronic music, or signals a rebirth in their career. Not that either is needed....we just want new tunes! p.s. some US shows would be great, too :) |

I will say, I adored the production for the Olympics. But here's hoping for a return back to basics. |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
I've got all their main releases and side releases, the Olympics, etc - but I find the only UW I listen lately (and over the past say 6 months) is stuff from the 90s: Live sets from the 90s, Dubno, Dubno's demo tape, and STiTI.
The side projects get so little playtime - almost none really. |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
my glass is raised for some new non-collaborative material. as of late i keep going back to STITI. still my fave UW LP as a whole. i'm very annoyed right now since Spotify removed it along with Dubno, BF and AHDO...!!! :(
i do take great comfort in the Riverrun releases as well, especially I'm a Big Sister... mmm Peach Tree... |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
Per Karl's Facebook posts today, UW is in the studio today, writing with Fred Gibson (from Eno • Hyde). They are also rehearsing (presumably for the upcoming live date).

Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
This is good news, indeed! Wouldn't it be nice if we were treated to some new tunes in progress, a la "you do scribble", " globe/holding the moth", "strumpet" etc.?
Or, failing that, a new setlist with some forgotten classics? |
Re: Okay already...now enough with the solo shit...get it together!
That would be nice. I guess we'll find out next week. I know a couple Dirts will be there.
