http://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/173771/9
Just saw this article and thought I would share. ------------ Isles of Wonder: Music For the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, is available for purchase NOW on iTunes, with a physical double-CD release coming next week. Digital download: iTunes UK, iTunes US, Amazon MP3 UK, Amazon MP3 US CD pre-order: Amazon UK, Amazon US There was plenty of Underworld music to be heard during the ceremonies. Two new brand new Underworld pieces were composed: ”And I Will Kiss” and “Caliban’s Dream” totaling over 24 minutes! Additionally, there were a lot of new remixes of classic Underworld songs by High Contrast and Darren Price featured during the Parade of Athletes. The full tracklisting of Underworld songs on the album is:

Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
Thanks for the share. I still don't know much about what they are doing apart from that it will have some sort of connection with Shakesphere's Tempest. Does anyone know if they're actually performing live in person or will we just here the music, and is the music going to be electronic/dance music or orchestral type stuff?

Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
Great news! Countdown to download commences....now!
I'd guess that given the size and spectacle of the ceremonies, there will be some huge, epic electronic moments, but probably a lot of orchestral, world music, generally more ambient segments that are sure to sound lovely, but not scare away an audience that's not up for dance music. |
Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
The album is up for preorder on the UK iTunes but with no previews and a deliberately vague tracklist. What's interesting is that the description also mentions "performances by top artists", so it's possible that the UW material will be interspersed with other stuff.

Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
Associated Press is reporting that 10,000 people will be involved and the ceremony is entitled "Isles of Wonder" by Danny Boyle. His show is inspired by William Shakespeare's The Tempest, and the opening sequence is going to feature a British countryside with dozens of animals taking part.
As far as big-name performers go, the only one who has been confirmed is former Beatles star Paul McCartney. While McCartney is beloved across the world, he is among the most influential people in Great Britain, so having him round out the opening ceremony is a no-brainer and obviously a great idea on Boyle's part. It is hard to say who else might be involved, but there are countless legendary musicians and performers with British roots, so the possibilities are endless. So Underworld aren't "big name"?;) |
Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
"lots of drums" according to a workmate who's taking part in the ceremony...

If there's a Glastonbury montage as per what has been said, they could pull stuff from the Experimental Sound Field gig thing

Won't be watching this live as away for the weekend, but got the telly box on "record". It is going to be fab! Well, it better be... I need something to take away the taste of traffic chaos in London! :) |
Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
I find myself reminding msyelf that Underworld were named "Music Directors" for the opening Ceremony. They've surely worked with their own productions, but it's not unlikely that they've selected or mixed other people's work, even big British pop stars.
That said, i'm hoping for 2 discs of UW solo! |

Surprised at the lack of interviews about the music creative process. Even UWlive is quite. Would love go hear something from R or K about everything since its all nearly upon us.

Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
my bet...
seeing as UW are the 'music directors' - and we have already seen Danny Boyle's playlist for what's going to be played during the ceremony so... my guess, there MIGHT be a few UW tracks, but I wouldn't expect anything close to an 'album' unless the 8 track thing is UW's music, then the x2 cd thing is the 'Olympic Playlist' and what about the Chemical Brothers' song??? |
Re: Olympic Ceremony music to be released digitally right after the event!
The Chemical Brothers song is the official song for cycling events. It's part of the "Rock the Games" initiative, that is putting music in all aspects of the Olympics.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8HR4OY20120627 As for Underworld music, I heard that as the Olympic torch enters the stadium, Two Months Off will play. ;) |
Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
Anyone know if this will be a UK itunes only release? So far no ability to preorder in US itunes....

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
I wouldn't worry. I"m pretty sure it'll be available worldwide at the same time. They also mentioned it being available on as many download and streaming providers as possible, so I'm sure it'll be on other places too like AmazonMP3, 7Digital, Rhapsody, Google Play, etc.

As cool as getting the soundtrack is... I feel that this work will be best viewed with video/visuals. Having said that anyone trying capture video? (sorry if this is a bit too RTSR)

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
BBC Newsnight just used Glam Bucket as music on a games report

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
On the NBC Nightly News, they showed a small video clip of the final rehearsal from today. The music was The Beatles 'Come Together' though.
And there was a pretty extensive interview with Danny Boyle on NBC tonight regarding his films and any hints about the Ceremonies. He was very tight lipped, and nothing new was given away that we hadn't already seen. No mention of Underworld. But hopefully that will change during the broadcast Friday night. -Jason |
Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
If you go down to point 7 in this article it seems to indicate that Underworld's music will be used during the athletes parade.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
I have a friend who is working on the release and he sent me a track listing today. It's not just a bit of underworld, it's underworld heavy. He swore me to secrecy about the tracks themselves but I'll share information that I think won't get anyone in trouble.
There are two tracks where UW are listed first, followed by other artists. Given the other artist names these tracks will probably be somewhat filmic, rather than their solo work. [run time removed] There are [several] UW tracks also appearing on the release. Run times vary, [run times removed]. There are sequential numbers in the listing that indicate some of these tracks will run back to back, but some missing track numbers indicate other pieces not owned by UW will be interspersed. The tracks span their career. The tracks appearing are drawn from the following albums: Barking, OWB, STITI, DNB, and one non-album release. [edited to remove more specifics like run time and number of tracks. sorry, i felt guilty for sharing so much] |

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
yes, two new pieces, quite long in total (i'm reluctant to include actual track times so think thing in a book length).
i've done a bit of youtubing on the artists listed with them and i think we can expect some phenomenal live percussion as well as choral support. and then after that it's all existing stuff. as a fan, the set list gave me butterflies. it's not just a collection of radio singles. it's a good selection. |
Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
From UW via Facebook:
With only hours to go until the London Olympic Ceremony starts its hard to believe tonight is finally here. Underworld have been working hard with Danny Boyle to make this an amazing event, composing two original pieces of music as well as producing all the music elements in the three-hour extravaganza. Hold on to your seats and cheer on the #TechnoOlympiad |
Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games
any mention of how we can get a hold of these in the US? i don't see it in our iTunes.
edit: nevermind, there it is :) |

well, according to the track list i have now, they are not the first track on either disc. on disc 1 they're not the first, second or third. you figure out the rest. oh yeah, then their next piece isn't until after the thirteenth track. subtle enough for you? they dominate disc 2: 4 tracks from DNB, 1 from STITI, 1 from OWB, 2 from Barking, 1 non-album track. i've also been told that they're still tweaking the final playlist. like up until the last minute they're going to be changing cues. |
