Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

Hello Dirties!

We've been working on a new underworld website over the past few months and we're very nearly there. We wanted to give you guys a heads up first and give you a chance to have a look around the beta site before we launch.

We're very interested to hear any feedback and about any problems you may encounter.

We've got a long list of bugs that we are and will be fixing.

We hope you enjoy!

http://www.underworldlivebeta.com/

All the Best,

it looks nice, but I'm not so sure about the fonts.

I'd prefer something a bit 'fatter' know what I mean?

Agreed on the fonts. They don't display particularly well. I've seen better version of typewriter fonts that aren't quite as fuzzy. This one makes me think my eyes are going to bad.
Also, links are getting lost in the body text. The previous button at the bottom of most posts is tough to suss out, and there are a few links in-line with the body text of some posts that disappear altogether. Need a different color for links, bold, or a substantially different font for them.

Noice. Looks fresh and orderly. Particularly love the videos subsite.

Agreed. Or please make the fonts at least more uniform. Less variety as regards fonts, punctuation, spacing = more clarity and, in this case, more beauty.

I suggest compressing the image sizes on the music subsite. The covers are 1MB each at the moment, which might be an unnecessary burden on the server, and some users' pipes.

Will a full archive be added to the diary section? If not, someone good at get jobs might want to snitch 'em all off the current site and put 'em on the FTP server.

Also, please add lots of 2012 entries to the events subsite. ;)

What is going on with the text? Its rendering almost as images.Checked out the code -- and that's some crazy complicated code for such a simple page. Not sure the full story about "Cufon" as a font service, but from seeing it implemented I can easily and instantly say that I do not like it.

I'd recommend using a service like Typekit or Fontface to handle web fonts.

Edit: And its text that I can't copy/paste. Yuck!

I'm trying to buy the Anthology Bundle but when I select a shirt color (either vanilla or black) it says 'Combination Sold Out'.

Trying to give you my money, please help me.

Same for me; just went to buy the bundle as well.

Store:
Excited for new items; however how's the hoodie? Looks tight and thin. Eagerly awaiting whats to come.

Site critique:
Splash page shouldn't have the menu on the bottom when the rest of the website's menu is on top. One or the other.

Some notes:

Would like a closeup of the logos on the new t-shirt
Fonts need to be sharper. they look badly rendered at the moment. eyes hurt.
Images need to be more compressed. Takes an age to load some pages. Images of 600k-1000k really unnecessary.
Lots of empty space means i have to scroll a lot. People have widescreens these days not portrait screens!
Man in the tshirt photo is wearing what looks like a digital watch. This cant be right.

Great improvements except for this! Speed optimizations would be cool. Stick it thru Firebug :p

Re: Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

Pros
------
Yay, RSS feed!
Yay, new merch!
Lower prices for digital downloads

Cons
------
No Members Area? :(
Must click-through to read the entirety of today's diary entry
No BornDirty or Forums link. :(
I realize that this is probably a sales platform limitation, but I don't like the fact that a single release (e.g. Barking) is now spread over multiple places (CD, MP3s, WAVs, Vinyl, Specials)

Bugs
------
  • Books of Jam 12-16 have broken download links
  • "Newer posts" and "Older posts" are reversed (i.e. "Newer posts" link takes you to older posts http://www.underworldlivebeta.com/category/diary)
  • Hoodies and socks are on the Featured category, but not Clothing?
  • As mentioned, most of the album art on the Music page (i.e. the stuff hosted on sparkstudios.co.uk) is over 1 MB each. Too big!
  • On Videos, the second-to-last video is duplicated
  • "A Collection" bundle only includes MP3's? No CD? Seems like a mistake.
  • I assume this was for the beta site, but it's on the production site too. If you leave this there, it'll mean underworldlive.com will fall off all the search engines soon!

Suggestions
--------------
Since you guys are using Topspin now, you should totally do this:

The new T-shirt logo is the same as this one:

just with the letters arranged differently.

I would like to see an archive of the Diary like in the previous version of the site.
I actually need to see entries in 2006-2007. (I am writing a paper on Oblivion With Bells, so...hahaha.)

It may just be me, but I can't see a 'basket' link - to after adding a couple of items and then continuing to shop, the only way I could go back to my basket to complete checkout was to add something else and then remove it.

Not that keen on the homepage - I likes the diary on the homepage - now, after selecting the daily diary you still have another click to get the full diary entry. And its been mentioned that the navigation at the bottom of the homepage is inconsistent with the rest of the site.

Liking the overall 'feel' of the site though.

Print version of the book of jam(s) would be cool!

Same here. Even more annoyingly, adding both new albums and the hoodie bundle to an order resulted in a "cart too heavy" error, meaning I had to separate it into two orders with twice the shipping and handling costs. Possibly a problem of differing release dates (Dec 2011 v. Jan 2012)?

You might find it easier then to order directly from the Topspin interface, rather than through the Underworldlive.com front-end:

Re: Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

Hi all... been awhile.

Fairly chuffed with the new site.. Though id love the diary to be given prominence on the home page. I dont like landing pages.. and as cool as it may seem I'd like to get straight into the content without having to click somewhere.

Like I said there should be a spot for the latest blog post to be read in full on the home page.. or at least a significant chunk. Its nice to have "previous" and "next" links in the site it just just feels that the blog is now marginalised and frankly that was the main reason why i go there in the first place.

Love to see the art and music getting a good show.

I'll say it now though... I have seeing "coming soon" on a website.. the last version had this all over the place. I see it in a couple of places now and while it is nice to think that someday these things will be updated the fact is that they may never. So either take down those sections until they are ready or read back over this post in a year and see if i eat my words. I hope you have time to fill in the "coming soon" bits!

Well done though.. it is quite lovely

Underworld are part of the best design collective in the world. Its a mighty shame this is the website they have gone for.

Part of my whole reason i got in to Underworld was the inspiring working relationship with Tomato. Besides a few album covers and some of Karl's snapshots it lacks any visual representation of Underworld. Its seems a bit bland and undignified for such a creative band.

No better. Can't even add different items into one basket. Probably a cookie issue, despite having allowed those.

I should add, though, that it might have something to do with my software configuration, what with all these nice Flash and script blockers weaving their protective nets in the background.

EDIT: It's not a pressing matter for me anymore since I've ordered in two batches.

i agree. sadly. :(

and being brutally honest, any website that has text that can't be copied/pasted has a pretty big problem, IMO.

I'm just bummed the "human" (read: Medium/Large) black men's shirts are sold out already...

Also a little bummed that the men's shirts have breast pocket placement for the logo, while the women's have (IMHO) a much cooler layout...

(I know - things will be restocked, and my complaints are all opinion LOL)

Re: Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

Can't say I'm particularly thrilled about the redesign either.... though my main gripe is that they've gotten rid of the old music section. I used to love heading there and hearing whatever new noodling the boys put up a few years before it came out as a Mark Knight remix.

You can now buy the River Run releases as WAV files. Has anyone checked them out? Do they sound significantly better than the MP3 versions?

TheBang 12-08-2011 02:35 PM

Re: Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

The RiverRun have been available in WAV since the last site upgrade, a year and half ago. Personally, I upgraded. It mainly comes down to if you feel you can hear differences between medium bitrate MP3's and lossless audio.

I might get the WAV file of I'm a big sister. Maybe.

You can add another item to your basket, just click "Keep shopping" in the pop up you get after adding your first item.

Looooving Big Meat Show, featured on the anthology :D

Yeah, I did use that function, but the problem arose and persists when trying to do the following:

I like having an alternate version of the track. I wish part of the lyrics weren't cut off near the middle of the song, though (around the "trancing, trancing" part). Oh well.

It seems like Minneapolis is a different version, and Simple Peal is a different version. What else on the bonus CD is a different version of a song?

TheBang 12-10-2011 07:01 PM

Re: Underworldlive.com 4.0 - New beta website

Simple Peal is the same.

The only other one that is different from what's been released before is Parc, which is edited to remove about 45 seconds after the first verse. Other differences have been covered in the Anthology thread.
