Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
I was tasked to comeup with 2 icons for the project I am working on. . . you know, a 'favicon.ico' thingy. I am not an artist and i have my plate full with just trying to keep up with functional change requests.
So I was given permission to offer up a contest to the dirty community So here it is, design two icons: 16×16px & 32×32px (either 8-bit or 24-bit) PNG format they can be the same image, just looking for clarity in the smaller one fit hey happen to be both. US$100 to the artist who designs the winning pair! Information regarding the application can be found here: http://dhims.health.mil/docs/factsheet-HAIMS.pdf Winning icon will be considered a work of the US Federal Government and will, therefore, be in the public domain. This is a real application - an integral part the largest healthcare information system currently in production. No guarantee the icons will become the part of the final release, but who knows. PM me to enter |

And I also assumed anyone who was serious had handfuls of doodles/ideas perhaps ready to throw against the wall to see if anything stuck.

My garden grass is really long.
I'm opening a contest to see who can my lawn the best. All you have to do is pitch up and give it a cut and possibly trim the edges too. The winner will win a prize but let me decide in my own way who will win. |

Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
you shouldn't use the word 'contest' when you mean 'work for free'
Why does everyone think the design community enjoys doing contests?! |

I though someone could use 100 bucks. Does the same go for remix contests? Fucktards |
Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
Christ. . . this really pisses me off. . .
Any self proclaimed member of "the design community" who was serious about making a living at it would have at the ready things they have already created, and the only work needed would be to make a 32x32 png out of it, thereby turning an unpaid work into a commodity. fucktard art snobs. I hope you don't have children depending on you for food and shelter. |
Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
I think youre being a bit harsh on bas_i_am. $100 for an icon is fair isnt it? Maybe he could have worded things better but it is what it is (or was). Give him a break.

Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
as a designer, i'm not fond of going thru contests, specially regarding delicate things as logos or icons. i don't mind helping either and i think it was better to ask for help and 'hiring' someone instead of putting all of the choices in contest for a prize.
logos need development, it's not a thing of making one. sometimes it's a thing of going through 200 to 400 logos until you find the one. |

We never contracted to design a logo. As a taxpayer, I would be a little irritated if we had. As far as I am concerned, the DHIMs logo http://dhims.ha.osd.mil/images/bg-logoLink.png was more than adequate. |
Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
regarding that image, that ain't a logo per se. it's like a seal more than a logo. what would work as a logo and icon in reduced size would be the globe with the lifeline on.
where's my prize? |

On the other hand, you seem to have enjoyed wasting time engaging in supercilious dialog. But, it appears you got screwed a few times in the past entering contests. Sorry to hear that. You probably would have won. Maybe next time you wont be so patronizing. |

This thread seemed strangely familiar to me, but then I remembered where I'd read a similar exchange...

and my work is serious. i don't enter contests because i refuse to waste my views over some people who lack or don't have the same vision as i. also, prolly i took 2 minutes to write both messages, so i don't believe i actually wasted some vital time in doing that. enough blahblah, good luck with your quest. |

Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
The music contest is a real one. Its not looking to have people make remixes so that they can avoid paying someone do to so, but rather have unnamed talents get exposed.
Design contests (and *maybe* not this one so much) are all about exploitation. Its about getting 20-30 comps to choose from rather than paying someone for their expertise and 2-3 comps. It happens all the time, and it belittles our industry. Did I go overboard with your case? probably and I apologize, but my gut reaction to reading your post did make me react negatively. I see it often. Some of these design contests even have the gaul to say that any submissions are property of the company running the contest. |
Re: Contest! Need icon(s) for Web Application (A real one)
Apology accepted. . and please accept mine.
Been dealing with government testers for the past 3 weeks who fail functional requirements over things such as they don't like the tool tip on a data row (despite the fact we have given them the ability to set any string to what ever they want) |
