"Some Music What I Like - Sometimes" - by Karl Hyde
I've just received a music cassette that Karl Hyde made for a friend of his back in the mid 1980's.
Its a TDK AD 90 cassette filled with tracks that Karl liked, and wanted his friend to enjoy, accompanying it is a letter, handwritten by KH including doodles and a bit about the cassette, and how/why he made it (i don't have this yet - its coming under separate cover, with a KH hand made & hand drawn / doodled calendar). The cassette tracklisting is handwritten by Karl - very neatly, and details the tracks and LP of origination where applicable....I haven't had the chance to listen to the quality yet, but this is what Mr Hyde was listening to around about 1985/6...all details are as on the tape.... A - "Some Stuff What I Listen To Sometimes" 1. Numbers - Kraftwerk (L.P. Computer World) 2. Kiss - Prince (L.P. Parade) 3. I'm a Man - Chicago (L.P. Chicago Transit Authority) 4. She Sells Santuary - The Cult (L.P. Love) 5. Somethingthat I Said - The Ruts (L.P. The Ruts) 6. Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin (L.P. Janis) 7. Juicy Fruit - M Tune (12" Mix) 8. Highways of My Life - The Isley Brothers (L.P. 3+3) 9. Red Rain - Peter Gabriel (L.P. So) 10. The Beatles - Paperback Writer B - "Some Other Stuff" 1. Suzanne Vega - Small Blue Thing (L.P. Suzanne Vega) 2. Village Ghetto Land - Stevie Wonder (L.P. Songs in the Key of Life) 3. Elenor Rigby - The Beatles (L.P. Revolver) 4. This is England - The Clash (L.P. Cut the Crap) 5. Walk This Way - Run D.M.C. (L.P. Raising Hell) 6. Still Alive An' Well - Johnie Winter (L.P. Still Alive An' Well) 7. Hell ain't a Bad Place to be - AC/DC (B Side to Whole Lotta Rosie) 8. Good Night Saigon - Billy Joel (L.P. the Nylon Curtain) 9. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel (L.P. So) 10. Memory Motel - The Rolling Stones (L.P. Black and Blue) so not a bad collection, some classics, some mid eighties artists....and some strange choices? you decide.... this is what influenced Mr Hyde before Underworld MK I surfaced.... more details & insights on Mr Hyde to follow when i get the letter and calendar....although i won't be divulging anything too personal...just in case Mattval1 "Numberonesuperfan" |

That's cool stuff, thanks for sharing.
Do you think Karl is embarrassed by this now? I know if I had tracklistings of my old mixtapes posted for all to see, I would be ashamed. I mean, Smashmouth. How foolish of me. |
Re: "Some Music What I Like - Sometimes" - by Karl Hyde
Thats awesome. How did you find this?

Re: "Some Music What I Like - Sometimes" - by Karl Hyde
With the exception of a few artists on the tape i've not heard of, that's pretty loaded with classic songwriters...nothing to be embarrassed of in the slightest, esp. for 1986! One could do a lot worse back then!
This is pretty cool, like a "Back to Mine" from pre-UWmk1 or post-Freur! |

I got a pretty cool cover of this one:
6. Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin (L.P. Janis) |

I think far from being embarrassing, it shows that Karl had great taste in 1985/86.

I wish I had great taste in music. It may take a while. |
Re: "Some Music What I Like - Sometimes" - by Karl Hyde
I hope Mr Hyde didn't mind me posting this tape listing here...
Rest assured that when i get the other stuff i will not be posting anything other than info about Underworld or KH's music, i will let the man have his privacy - things we did and said in the past ought to remain private. These items are being sent to me as a private collector of Underworld memoribillia, by someone who knows what owning these things means - and rather than throwing them away they will be going to a good home. These things are going into my collection, which one day i hope to share via other mediums, such as a book, and until then the private stuff will remain just that. Mattval1 |

I can remember one of the first indie-tapes i made in 1992. I think I still have it somewhere... i'll see if i can find it :) far from being embarassed by it, i know its got some classics on it :p however, in 1985/86 i hadnt really developed my tastes and was listening to whatever my brothers were listening to mostly (then again, Karl is older than me!)

Look what you've done: now you've got Karl wondering which of his undeserving friends has parted with his very personal gift for material gain. Poor man! http://www.dirty.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

very good ,thanks for sharing

I'd really like to know what kind of music UW were listening to in the mid nineties. If they'd done the Dirtyradio shows then, what would they have played? (Maybe people who've read interviews and stuff from that period have a clue...)

And another point concerning lyrics: In the eighties, a lot of (but not all) musicicians used simple words/analogies to convey complex/deep situations and emotions (The police are the best example that springs to mind). In the nineties, musicians generally used overly complex words to convey simple situations and emotions (or in many cases, absolutely nothing)! At least imo. |

Re: "Some Music What I Like - Sometimes" - by Karl Hyde
so does Prince sue you for owning an illegal copy of his song or Karl for making an illegal copy of his song?
|

either way, are you allowed to write Prince these days without being sued? |
