2010-07-17 iTunes Festival, Roundhouse - London, UK

Moderator Edit:

Setlist was:

Downpipe
Always Loved A Film
Nu Train
Two Months Off
Scribble
Bird 1 (Strumpet on setlist)
Rez/Cowgirl
Between Stars (Between the Stars on setlist)
Diamond Jigsaw
King Of Snake
Born Slippy.NUXX

----------------------------

Even though its still a few days away, I'm going to open a thread on this. Mainly to ask if this is actually one of the gigs that is being streamed, I can't find any info online to confirm it is and UWlive doesn't mention anything either. If it is being broadcast to the wider world, a copy would be most appreciated as I'll be down the front somewhere acting like a loon.

Oh, if anyone from UW or UQ HQ is reading, I'd be very grateful if any of the following songs could be played:

Dirty Epic
Cherry Pie
Bamboo (Or whatever it may be called these days)

Assuming that we'll get another outing of Diamond Jigsaw/Between Star and Scribble, will be interesting to see if something is played for the first time ever. Oh, wouldn't Pearls Girl being mixed in/out of Scribble be a good thing to hear?

Re: iTunes Festival, 17/07 (Roundhouse 5)

Im pretty sure this will be the setlist:

1. Bird 1
2. Scribble
3. Between Stars
4. Two Months Off
5. Diamond Jigpants
6. Between Stars
7. ALAF
8. NUXX

I just have a cynical 'hunch'... plus i think they will be playing songs that have feature vocals... although I would love to hear some obscure stuff though, i remember when we got the maida vale set we got Surfboy and Trim... maybye deep arch, oich, pie, epic or even cups, mama, bruce lee, faxed invitation or 8 ball :)

Trying the stream now with a UK VPN. its UK only so dont bother if youre not in the UK or with a proxy/VPN. Even so i'm getting a green screen within a quicktime container (i have latest quicktime), and some snippets of audio every few seconds. This sucks. I'll skip this. Good luck to UK people who want to waste their saturday evening trying to tune in.

Re: 2010-07-17 iTunes Festival, Roundhouse - London, UK

Just got back from Underworld at the Roundhouse - what an excellent gig! Lineup: Darren Price, Rick Smith, Karl Hyde (from left to right)

I was at the front, but stuck between two disturbingly stoic people (who only expressed a flicker of emotion when the cameras were on them) for half the night, until a girl tapped me on the shoulder and commented that I was the only person in our section who looked like they were enjoying themselves so things took a turn for the better when she found her way to the front during King of Snake :) Unfortunately this meant that I ended up looking far more enthusiastic than the people beside me and have already been informed that I ended up on the live feed (argh), but will hopefully not make it onto the iTunes coverage on ITV2... *shame*

Surprises: a new synth-rock(?!) track featuring both Rick and Karl singing (or perhaps I'm just not l33t enough to know it) and the new doof-doof version of Strumpet which sounds much more produced. Opening track was Downpipe, and there was sadly no Moaner (or encore), but they managed to squeeze in Rez/Cowgirl, King of Snake, Two Months Off and of course, Scribble and Born Slippy. Was a bit too blissed out to remember the full set list, I'm afraid.

Other points of possible note: Karl's glittery jacket has disappeared, and new merchandise includes a '; cty luvs a boyfrnd' t-shirt and '; y'r a btifl thng' tote bag (they're the items I purchased anyway) as well as a few other designs (the only ones I can remember were based on Winjer and Dogboy, both with less vowels and more semicolons than you might expect).

Looking forward to the album launch gig in September!

What was it with all the fucking school kids acting like twats at the beginning.....special contrats to the fair haired bloke for giving one a right kicking after attempting some crowd surfing. They seemed to calm down after around 20 mins (probably Mummy had come to pick them up)

Top night overall though & the boys seemed to really enjoy themselves

Very much enjoyed the gig, Karl and Rick very happy. Loved Karl standing on top of the gear during Rez and NUXX. More detailed report later. The setlist I got lists Strumpet and Between the Stars if were being technical.

AIN'T NO SHAME IN THE GROOVE. (I was one of the only people going well off in the front row at their set at Winter Sound System, Melbourne, so I sympathise fully. Haters are cold inside.)

Re: 2010-07-17 iTunes Festival, Roundhouse - London, UK

I thought the gig was really good overall although a little short...was desperate for Jumbo or Moaner to finish the set off. It felt more like a festival set rather than a tour set which I guess makes sense because it was a one off gig. I love it when Karl and Rick are clearly enjoing the show and have lots of energy :) I thought they got a good crowd reaction (I was worried that most people would stand still until NUXX was played!). Any way the proof is in the pudding...I had a heavy cold and felt like s**t all day but they managed to make me dance for 1 1/2 hours!!!

Really liked Downpipe as an opener as it got everyone dancing straight away. The new stuff is obviously dance floor ready which was a good thing for a crowd that would have probably got a bit bored waiting 5 mins for the beautiful burnout synths to kick in! - there were a few people next to me who I don't think were underworld fans that were singing/shouting 'can you feel it' during ALAF by the end of the track.

Hopefully when they have been playing the new stuff live more regularly they will do some mixing between the tracks. From what I remember, only downpipe and ALAF were mixed 'properly' (i.e. not just faded!)...and maybe we'll get a few Pricey tunes mixed in too :) Can't wait now for the forum gig and really exicited to get my hands on Barking soon!

edit: oh, and thanks again to the underworld team for the tickets :)

Any ideas when (or if) this is being shown on ITV2 ?

TheBang 07-19-2010 02:40 AM

Re: 2010-07-17 iTunes Festival, Roundhouse - London, UK

ITV2 is showing highlights from iTunes Festival on Thursdays and Fridays at 10 PM. So if anything maybe this week or next.

Also, highlights on ITV1 on 28 July, 5 August & 12 August.

Re: 2010-07-17 iTunes Festival, Roundhouse - London, UK

riiiightyho! overall, a top night out - great stuff on the competition - think the fans/never-seen-before ratio was about 75:25, and once you managed to get those who looked like they were in the wrong building out of eyeline, things were better!

opening with 'downpipe' was a little strange, given that it was an underworld gig and that's not an underworld release? wasn't complaining as it's a belter. sadly, sounded better than most of the new stuff. 'scribble's nice enough, but 'diamond jigsaw' was, well, awful i thought (mates agreed) it just sounds like pop-dance, and rick should stick to the day and night job - sorry, but there's a reason karl hasn't let you sing before! (pricey looked a bit embarrassed at times - head down, stifling a laugh - or was i projecting?) bird1/strumpet/? had a great groove, but a bit too much vox so it was hard to get into...

however, the old stuff still works a treat - even in an overbright (for teevee) room where the smoke machine must've been turned off or broke down after the first weak puff out of it! so it was a top night out - nice to meet scary man and his not-so-scary wife!

nice idea, well-executed, here's to september just up the road from roundhouse...

'Hightlights' will be on ITV2 on Thursday night, but I can pretty much guarantee that they will only show one track. I'm betting on either Scribble or .NUXX.
A top gig! the boys seemed to enjoy themselves and was pleased to see the majority of the people around me were loving it and lots of hands in the air around the place!

True, but it's a good, accessible opener given that half the people there seemed to be competition winners who'd just applied for any ticket rather than because they'd wanted to see Underworld specifically...

Noooo, Rick Smith singing was a great surprise and I thought it sounded good - not that keen on the song itself, but I thought he did a good job. Scribble is Underworld is joysome in the same way Rez/Cowgirl is unrestrained joy with a hint of melancholy; a track which can't fail to make you smile.
