It's 1999 again!
As we eagerly await the new Underworld album and anticipate a summer scored by "Scribble"... we also have:
New single ("Swoon") and album ("Further") by The Chemical Brothers. New (amazingly good) record by Hybrid ("Disappear Here") - ok, this came out in March, but it's been on endless loop since then. New tracks by Orbital! Hooray! Seems Leftfield is also making a comeback. Fluke is also staged to tour. And for the real deep diggers, i hear there's new Apollo 440 to be released. Now if only we'd get a second LP from The Propellerheads, it really will be 1999 all over again! Call me old fashioned, but i love all these bands and have strong nostalgic feelings for a time when electro ruled the airwaves and was dare-i-say more exciting than its been the past 5 years or so. |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Fluke is going to tour again? That's good news; I was wondering when I'd hear about them again. It's been like 5 years since Puppy was released and I haven't heard any talk about 2 Bit Pie. Bring on the '99 vibes!

Re: It's 1999 again!
FSOL just released their very Dead Cities-esque new album Environments 3 as well. :)

wait - how did I not know about this?!?!?!? and new Orbital as well... weird. and Cassius is re-releasing "1999" btw |
Re: It's 1999 again!
New Orbital, where is this info from?
|
Re: It's 1999 again!
They've been playing new tracks on their recent shows, I think one was played on a Six Music show they did lately. I had a glance at some info over at the forums on loopz.co.uk a couple of weeks back.
Environments 3 contains a couple of Dead Cities era outtakes but it's 3/4 all newly recorded FSOL material. Mix of ambient, neoclassical and glitchy bits. It's marvellous. |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Hmmm, more than that:
On June 20th, Orbital will unveil its first new material since 2004 with the release of a brand new double single. Consisting of tracks titled “Don’t Stop Me” and “The Gun is Good”, the effort is said to “represent the signature Orbital sound, with hints of new elements, and definitely a few surprises, signifying a band still at [its] creative peak.” http://www.loopzorbital.com/phpBB3/v...php?f=2&t=2837 |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Info on the new Orbital single (20th of June):
http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/0...es-new-single/ Still waiting for new news about the Fluke tour, but the bandmembers have mentioned it's happening in 2010: http://www.2bitpie.net/post-fluke-live-2010-86.aspx |
Re: It's 1999 again!
One of the new Orbital songs pretty much sucks badly in my opinion:

Re: It's 1999 again!
Hmm, yeah, that's not great.
the "ohwaoh"'s and cut-up vocals are pretty annoying. There are some interesting beats and hooks, but it sounds like a few too many ideas crammed into one track - It actually shapes up near the end, but i really could do without the vocal samples |
Re: It's 1999 again!
The "Don't Stop Me" sample is pretty annoying. When it gets to the melodic section with all the layers it sounds more Orbital than they've sounded since The Middle Of Nowhere, though. Quite enjoyed that.
The 'ohwaoah' sample is from Video Killed The Radio Star, isn't it? |
Re: It's 1999 again!
The lyrics should be... "Ooooh Oh NooooooOOOOOO!!!! Please stop me, stop me" :D

And also, the link above was an earlier version. Apparently (from their fansite) there have been at least 3 versions. Now, the other new track - "The Gun is Good" - Paul Hartnoll unveils the lyrics here: http://www.examiner.com/x-11210-Indi...Coachella-2010 Yikes. |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Going to see Leftfield in Dublin on the 3rd of June, will be nice to see a dedicated gig rather than the festival circuit that they have lined up for the summer. Will be hoping that they still have a policy of pushing the sound system to the max...
... and on that note... remember Faithless have a new album out.. (were they around in 99? maybe? im not sure) And if you want to think 99 and before... Blur released a new single this year... |

Re: It's 1999 again!
shit, only took 10 years.
maybe all the bands from then have finally recovered from partying too much and now they're making material again. ahh, interesting summer indeed! |

Re: It's 1999 again!
FWIW Paul Hartnoll's solo album was pretty good...not amazing but I liked it...would be surprised if the new Orbital material turned out to suck
Really, really not surprised they came back though |
Re: It's 1999 again!
cheers bargo - got the fsol album today - very very nice indeed :)

Re: It's 1999 again!
new song isnt amazing or anything, but it's probably their best since middle of nowhere
and the vocals are the best thing about it |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Not that impressed with the new Orbital track but that's not really a shocker since I hadn't really thought much of anything they'd done after In Sides. Very cool to see all the old names cropping back up though, it'll be interesting to see who's still got some fresh ideas left and who doesn't.
I think that the 2000's have moved on quite nicely without these guys though -- acts like The Field, Pendulum, Ulrich Schnauss (to name a few) and others have since come along and filled many of the voids left by some of these midday acts. Just seems as if lately, that being the past 2 years, that the whole umbrella term "electronica" has been suffering. My hat's off to the old guys for coming back into the fold -- maybe they'll fill this newer void... ;) |

Re: It's 1999 again!
The Hartnoll Bros. should have sampled 'Pet Semetary' instead-
"Some things are better off dead" ....like Orbital :) |
Re: It's 1999 again!
Having a deep listen to the new Orbital double A-side "Don't Stop Me"/"The Gun is Good"... and you know, it's really great!
"Don't Stop me" is much more integrated than the version posted here earlier... it builds from the analog bassline and chopped samples into something both lush and aggressive, something that could have fit on In Sides or surely Middle of Nowhere. "The Gun is Good" has a crap-lousy dialog sample, though it's nothing too shocking, given the Hartnolls' penchant for cheeky and somewhat political statements... but the music is vintage Orbital - skittering beats, tweaked synth hooks, walls of layers. Somewhat reminiscent of "You Lot " off their last LP, but much more realized. In short, the boys sound reenergized. It's not a retread of past Orbital moments, as was so much of Blue Album - it's building off what they've always done so well, but sounding new this time. |
Re: It's 1999 again!
thought "the gun is good" was pretty decent...didn't care much for "don't stop me now"...only first listen though
|
Re: It's 1999 again!
Alright, so following up on the double A-side, Orbital will be working on a new album:
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?f...ogId=537095671 Fantastic! In fact, though it took several listens, both "Don't Stop Me" and especially "The Gun is Good" are in fact vintage aggro Orbital...cheeky, acid-tinged, with some lush passages as well. And now a new album! Hooray! I might be desperate for ANY quality music these days, but the new Chemical Brothers, Hybrid, and what i've heard from Underworld. all have me in great spirits. Roll on 2010, 1999 mkII |
Re: It's 1999 again!
New Orbital is terrible....they are dead to me now.:(
|
Re: It's 1999 again!
Also, Futurama is making new episodes...cool!
|
Re: It's 1999 again!
Apparently Seefeel are releasing a new EP this year, too. It really is the 90s coming back.
