David Lynch: Good Day Today

Re: Good Day Today
what is this
|
Re: Good Day Today
holy vocoder, batman!
are we sure this is Underworld? I mean, there's vocal effects like Oich Oich and Juanita, but those still sound like Karl. Is this a collaborator singing? What's with the machine-gun blasts of beats? And the unchanging tech beat? ooh, this is weird. yes, friendly NPR man says it's new Underworld. Really?! |

Re: Good Day Today
this is def. underworld.
lyrics blend the tone and feel of 8 Ball and Strumpet in my mind. |
Re: Good Day Today
I could see this song really hitting the KCRW listeners in the sweet spot. Good choice of a promo for that station.

Re: Good Day Today
ARF
sorry bout that. it's by underworld, called good day today. another single? |

Lyrics uplifting, sure, but by UW standards, they're rather minimal. Still, two tracks in and Karl's definitely in a happy mood! And still i wonder, is that Karl singing? those gun blast beats are annoying, though. And i'm not sure i like how high pitched the refrain is. It also has, dare i say, what sounds like a bit of autotone. Yikes. Credit to them for bringing this out of left field. With the 2nd and 3rd RiverRun, the Breaking and Entering Soundtrack, some of the music on Sunshine, and lots of OWB, i wondered if UW were veering further into ambient or organic/live music. These tracks as well as some of the live bits like Diamond Jigsaw and Strumpet are very electro in tone. |
Re: Good Day Today
Bonkers!
|
Re: Good Day Today
It's definitely a return to a more melodic, synthy vibe, just like Steve Hall said it would be.
The Revenge of MK1 or MK1 Strikes Back? |
Re: Good Day Today
do we know this is actually UW? doesn't sound a bit like karl's delivery to me.
|
Re: Good Day Today
These lyrics are not exactly uplifting. It's a desperate plea from a scared and fragile person who desperately just wants to have one day that's not complete shit and filled with anxiety and terror. The subject is weak and downtrodden, yet hopeful, in a similar way to the subject of 8 Ball.

Re: Good Day Today
The announcer and the playlist say new Underworld.
Like i said above, i'm just not hearing Karl through the vocoding. Could be a collaboration. I dunno who Sia is, but aren't they supposed to be on the record? And Tong's got it already! So, it's done then? Release date, please! |
Re: Good Day Today
recorded :)
anyone wants it? also, it reminds me of that oliver huntermann mix of crocodile. not fond of the vocoder but it was a surprise to hear gunshots. kind of a stark difference between scribble, this is more muted and minimal. |
Re: Good Day Today
I am not convinced this is Underworld, I think Bentley might have got something mixed up or some kind of fake. The vocals, the gunshots? Just not very Underworld.

This is subjective as heck, but 8-Ball has never given me a moment of dread. Yeah, there's a crazy guy with a whiskey sack as a walkie talkie, but that feels like Karl responding with joy to his urban surroundings. Yes, Good Day today sounds like a guy more on edge. By the way, it HAS been a VERY Good Day Today! Two new Underworld tracks! Is it Christmas already?! |

Re: Good Day Today
Jason Bentley is a huge Underworld fan. He would not mix it up.
Please post a link. I can't listen to the stream. |
Re: Good Day Today
ok, i'm gonna to edit it. see ya later!

Re: Good Day Today
a little too slow, i guess.

Re: Good Day Today
Anybody think maybe this is a B-Side to the single of Scribble?
it sounds sort of B sidey |
Re: Good Day Today
it's just my imagination or the start of GDT has a little bit of scribble's synths? listen closely, it's kind of masked by the other song, but i think it's there.
|
Re: Good Day Today
This does sound b-sidey, I definitely don't think this was intended to be a single. They're not really doing b-sides anymore but I'd assume it would be on the album.

Re: Good Day Today
A little post by myself on the whole new releases and all that... not much yet but just my two cents

Re: Good Day Today
Nice one, Dunwho!
Well, it does seem like Karl is streamlining his vocals. And some of Rick's synths do sound a bit 80's-ish. But i don't consider these new tracks or the live ones to be a huge throwback to Freur or UW mk i. Those incarnations were strictly pop. synth-pop of funk-pop or whathaveyou, but the lyrics were designed for the masses and the instrumentation clearly of the time. Yes, these latest underworld tracks do have elements of the past, but they're not stale; in fact, they're like UW reinventing or reacclaiming themselves as electronic, after increasing forays into ambient or live jamming. of course, once we hear the new album in full, we can make a concerted decision on what they're up to! Ok, an hour or so ago, i was pretty grossed out by "Good Day Today", but it's quickly revealing itself to me. Though by no means a direct comparison, tthere have always been album cuts that on first blush the fans were like, "What the heck?" Think "Ess Gee" and "Bruce Lee" and "Trim". Yeah, they're a bit unexpected and maybe not fan favorites, but i like that UW is not afraid to stretch beyond the epic electronic that they're known for. Whereas some of their contemporaries (err, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Prodigy, to an extent Hybrid, although their latest LP is stunning, Leftfield, even Fluke) played it formulaic, with the exception of a few cuts on AHDO, Underworld have not repeated themselves. I think the new record will be a revelation. |
Re: Good Day Today
im very very confused by this track. the gunshots are very bizarre. sounds mobyish. its not a bad track, whoever made it.
Why would he have a different track than everyone else got? so confused. |

Re: Good Day Today
I guess so, its just that why no mention of it anywhere else? Its not often that a band releases 2 tracks in short succession is it?
Anywho, i'm not doubting it, just a bit baffled. |
Re: Good Day Today
this isn't underworld
|
Re: Good Day Today
Liking this a lot, very hazy and upbeat. This should be a cracking album. Sounds like another version of Swing Up High?
|
Re: Good Day Today
I'm really unsure about this one too. There's stuff I like in it but it doesn't seem to go anywhere. And doesn't sound anything like Underworld. At all. b-side maybe?
|
Re: Good Day Today
i do think it sounds very much like underworld. That's not to say that it isn't kinda weird, especially the gunshots. Maybe it's a connection to the lyrics, the story seems to be about a person in desperation, longing for just a day of relief from misery, maybe due to living in a warzone or other kind of violent surroundings...
Hard to hear if it's Karl on vocals or not. |

Regardless of if it's them or not, this is really fucking stuck in my head today. :) |
Re: Good Day Today
i hate it. and up until now the only UW track i've ever hated was boy boy boy. so here's #2.
|
Re: Good Day Today
If it's an Underworld song, it's pretty interesting. Gunshots sound odd. Hahaha. But I like it. (Thanks for the d/l, holden~)
|
Re: Good Day Today
think the Gunshots are added in by KCRW. they don't fit with the song and are in a different,er, key, if you will.
