Massive Attack - Heligo Land

Coz it ain't illegal to stream [in thoery] some tracks have popped up on this Youtube channel. Have to say I'm very impressed with it so far and finding it much easier to get in to compared to 100th Window. Fav song so far is Flat Of The Blade:

MassiveAttack.IE has a forum where you can download a pretty decent copy of Heligoland - basically a collection of the most high-quality rips from radio and television. It's not bad! Atlas Air is brilliant. Don't know how I feel about the rest of the album yet but give it time...

It's easy to find the whole thing on mediafire.com but it's not worth the time it takes to download. Massive Attack are done. They were done 10 years ago.

wow
you must be on crazy pills

I mean sure... it's not an incredible album
but NONE of their albums are great straight through

I think there's a lot of strong tracks (moreso than on 100th Window)

hmmm.... I don´t know...

Unfinished Sympathy, United Snakes and Harpsichord are one of my absolute favourites and some of them are quite new as far as I know.

But as they say on Myspace.... "if a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing slowly" :)

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

Maybe they should have done this album even more slowly, then...

Yes, U/W is good example, right? But I don´t know what is the worst, unfinished tracks or no music at all :)

kinda underwhelmed by this. esp. after the strong ep that came out. a bit gutted by this.

Well, after the first few listens I was unimpressed so I left it off the playlist for a few weeks. Fast forward to this week and I like it! Overall it's a good record but there is a distinct lack of flow. Also, I reckon they made a mistake releasing Christoff Berg's Remix of Bulletproof Love on the EP as it way outshines the album's Flat of the Blade.
7/10

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

yeah, the remix ep seems to be shining brighter than the record.

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

I agree. I love Tim Goldsworthy (shame he left DFA, or did he? seems very confusing) and the boratto mix is up to his usual standards. overall a satisfying remix package. i tried to listen to the album again, thinking that maybe my previous download was the poorly encoded first leak but was unable to more than tolerate any one song. they're ok but they're doing nothing for the legacy of massive attack. i can't imagine what kind of absolute shit they'd put out if Tricky does end up guesting.

Had the chance to listen to this in full after my local record store put it out a few days early - the album as a whole initally didn't appeal to me at first, but now I've had the chance to listen to it in high-quality with some decent speakers it's really grown on me. I don't think anything Massive Attack will do in future could possibly top Mezzanine (moody, tense, thoughtful and overwhelming - one of my favourite albums of all time), but Heligoland is definitely a very solid record, thematically and sonically beautiful.

north american dates announced.
2 for Toronto !
:D

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

North American dates?!??!?!?!?!

WHEN/ WHERE????

I just went onto the MA forum, and the news page (didn't see anything)
and on ticketmaster, it just has three dates listed for San Francisco

[edit]

oh I see;

Massive Attack tour dates:
5/7, Toronto, ON (Sound Academy)
5/9, Toronto, ON (Sound Academy)
5/11, NYC, NY (Terminal 5)
5/12, NYC, NY (Terminal 5)
5/18, Los Angeles, CA (Wiltern Theater)
5/19, Los Angeles, CA (Wiltern Theater)
5/25, San Francisco, CA (Warfield Theater)
5/27, San Francisco, CA (Warfiled Theater)
5/30, George, WA Sasquatch Festival

Really not much of a tour is it? I mean - it's INSANE that they're not stopping in Chicago

BrotherLovesDub 02-25-2010 04:58 PM

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

who exactly makes up the Massive Attack touring group?

joethelion 02-25-2010 05:07 PM

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

well - when I saw them a couple of years back (on the Tour to support "Collected") it was 3D, Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser, and their tour band

(Daddy G wasn't there b/c he just recently had a kid)

I don't know who was in the touring band, but it was basically a normal "band set up" - guitar, bass, drums, keyboards

From what I've heard on bootlegs of recent shows, instead of Elizabeth, they've got Martina Topley-Bird, but other than that - it's pretty much the same (with Daddy G)

Aaaaargh! No Chicago? WRONG!

Martina Topley Bird will probably be there, she was for da UK tour.

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

There are some fantastic bootlegs of the recent concerts around. One of them Milan 11/2009 is great except for the radio DJ who feels the need to explain *everything* between every song in Italian, is mint and a great example of how MA sound on tour in 2009/10. I've made a version that snips out 99% of this annoying DJ and just concentrates on the music. Judging from this i'd say that MA are well worth seeing live. Heligoland is a return to form. I refused to buy 100th Window because of the DRM. I hear that this album is available un-DRM'd on iTunes Plus with extra tracks.

Took a few listens to get into it, but i'm really enoying the album now, definately a grower. track 4 especially which sounds like it could've been on mezzaine

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

I have given the album some time and I liked it initially, but didn't respond in this thread and thought I'd give the album more time. Well, it grew on me more. I am quite happy with the album. I like it a lot better than 100th Window. While 100th Window is technically great, it isn't an enjoyable listen to me. Very one-dimensional in tone and sound, lacks diversity and variety, and is dreary from start to finish. I like the album, but not too much. I'd rank it last for all their albums.

So, as I was saying, I'm glad that this album, Heligoland, is much better (to me it is, at least). It actually has life, for one thing. Pray for Rain and Atlas Air would be my favorite tracks. I also really like Girl I Love You and Babel. The rest of the songs are good or at least solid. I really dig Flat of the Blade for some reason. Maybe it is because I really dig dark and experimental electronica music (for instance, 10,000 Hz Legend is my favorite Air album, believe it or not [not that I don't love Air's typical stuff, because I do]). I'd rank this album as third best from MA. I'm real happy it turned out well. It sure isn't a Mezzanine or Blue Lines, though.

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

Saw them live in Melbourne two nights ago. Was one person away from the front. Absolutely fucking mindblowing. Beautiful visuals, sound quality was on point and some stunning vocal performances from Robert del Naja, Grant Marshall, Horace Andy, Martina Topley Bird and Deborah Miller. Excellent evening.

Re: Massive Attack - Heligo Land

still no word about a show in Chicago... right?

just doesn't make sense - as there's about a week gap between NYC and LA

5/12, NYC, NY (Terminal 5)
5/18, Los Angeles, CA (Wiltern Theater)

Unfortunately, the remixed EP reaches me more than the actual trax... The live sets however... man. storming.
