Good Morning Cockerel / we need more piano songs

This song stuns me every time. It could be because I'm a pianist, but it's slowly become my favorite on Oblivion With Bells. My fascination with the song has started to make me see OWB as UW's piano album... anyone else hear this?

I for one love these piano songs and I would love to see more of then. I got really excited for "Jumping Then Cran" on the last webcast, but the stream dropped out in the middle making an mp3 rip impossible...

How about the piano in "Holding the Moth"?

Also, there was a full version of "Jumping Then Cran" on the Beautiful Burnout ArtJam soundtrack.

i liked the hammond organ near the end of faxed invitation; I'd like to see more of that. didn't care for the song, though.

The Holding the Moth finish saves the song for me--its as if every little element is pushing towards that piano ending.

Whats the Beautiful Burnout ArtJam soundtrack? Where can I find it?

Try Little Speaker or Ansum, or Ancient Phat Farm Coat.
Lots of (repetitive) piano there.

Your heard it Mr. Smith, more piano!

(There's also "piano" in Nuxx 2003, KoS, Push Upstairs)

ugh please no more of that. They totally ruined what started as a nice minimal tech-house song when they played it live before the album . Now it sounds like some sort of lounge jazz your parents would listen to.
I liked the piano song at the end of I'm a Big Sister... though.

Agree! I forget which live show it was played at, but I loved it without the piano. It was still called, "Globe" back then.

Sofia, Bulgaria, and Cocoon 2006. It was also played at Montreux 2005, but there's no (released) recording of it.

I've always liked Underworld's use of the piano. I agree that OWB seems to have more "live" piano than previous records but there are great piano sounds in Dirty Epic, Ansum, M.E., Juanita, and Ancient Phat Farm Coat, just off the top of my head. Push Upstairs and King of Snake, too, of course, and Nuxx 2003.

Fuck no we don't need anymore bland piano garbage, we want to hear that awesome guitar that is gathering a thick layer of dust.

I think it's great that in Underworld, we have such talented musicians that can create such different styles and utilize various live instruments to do so. A piano track here, a guitar sketch there, excellent production throughout. Personally, i'm more partial to the banging dance tracks a la King of Snake, Moaner, Momove, DA3D and the like, but so often it's good to have a bit of organic calmness to catch your breath.

A sterling memory illustrating the point:
Was driving with my father listening to "A Hundred Days Off" (he was quite inspired by watching the "Footwear Repairs" video, so i was introducing him to the catalog) - "Trim" ended, and "ess Gee" came on. He asked "Is this still your Underworld album?" Dad's a jazz and new age fan, so i guess he liked what he heard. "Yeah" i replied - "Just wait a minute". Enter "Dinosaur Adventure 3D" - back to what Dad expected.
But that sort of "surprise!" moment is one of my favorite aspects of UW... you sort of expect Karl's cryptic wordplay and Rick's knack for a great beat and synth hooks. So a change of pace and a challenge of expectations is a good thing, imho.

Re: Good Morning Cockerel / we need more piano songs

I don't even consider Ess Gee and Cockerel in the same vein. Cockerel is a nice little track but I agree that Loads of Birds fits better on the album.

IMO, Ess Gee is arguably the worst Underworld track album. I skip that track faster than any other. At least Cockerel sets the mood for the opening calming notes of Mamgu. Ess Gee does nothing of the sort. Its grates on my ears and is the exact opposite mood predecessor to Dino.
