Dirty compilation 2009

I thought it would be wise to start early his year. Let's make this thread the starting point.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Good idea!

To clear this up early then, what date are we going for as a deadline!

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

November the 1st? And is there someone who can host this? Holden? Maus?

Mike 07-23-2009 12:02 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

I can host it up on rowla.music

I'm working on a full album right now anyway, so I'm sure I'll have at least an edit version of something new I can contribute.

Very nice of you, Mike!
Would be good if we could mirror it on Maus's darksounds.org page with the previous two.

Nov 1 sounds very do-able. I'm in!

I've also got a few other tracks that will be up soon, by November 1st hopefully I'll have a choice of tracks to go with. :)

Great, well i think it should go on darksounds.org page anyway since thats the home of the project, but i can host the files at rowla if needed - i have plenty of space and bandwith..

Plus i can also promote it on music.rowla.com, we are getting about 1000 unique visitors a month now.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

well done Mike, 1000 unique visitors a month is not bad at all!

That would be nice Mike! Thanks!

Nice one Mike.

Would be good to get some more interest in this one as it's a shame not many other people get to hear some great tracks on here.

We should send it out to some webzines etc for review.

That sounds like a great idea! i know i have a few contacts here or there in the media i could try and get them to do a review... generate a bit of interest ...

Buji 07-24-2009 10:12 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

I can gather some webzine contacts together, maybe if everybody who submits a track searches for 10 webzine/fanzine site links or similar! We could write up a small press release when everybody has submitted and fire it out with a link for the compilation to review.

We could even be really cheeky and ask Underworld very nicely to throw an un-used piece of music our way to add more weight to the compilation?!?

Just trying to think of a few ideas!!!

I'll join too, would be nice to have a theme again?

holden 07-25-2009 10:07 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Re: theme -
Last year, i threw out "Evidence of Autumn", basically because of the time of year we started compiling. It sort of guided me in how i composed one of the tracks. And the year before, "Dreamgirl, i'm desperate for you" did get a direct translation in one of the tracks. For the others that contributed, does the theme actually help focus your writing or no?
I guess for the listener, you can choose to associate whatever feeling the title conjures to the songs.
But with the eclectic influences and talents, it'll be pretty diverse regardless of the theme.
That said, someone else recommend a title! :p

Future Proof 07-25-2009 03:41 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

I'd write a song for a theme, but I can't think of any themes personally... would've loved to have got in the "Evidence Of Autumn" one though, Autumn is my favorite season and is very evocative to me. Oh well!

As an aside though, we should try a "just for fun" comp where we all take a stab at porno music. :)

Dunwho 07-25-2009 04:34 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

I think the theme is important to the idea, it brings all the work we create together and gives the collection more gravity.

Ehm... i think what should happen is that everyone here who wants to submit a theme does so, and then maybe we can gather them and make a poll..

..so maybe we say submit a theme before the end of Tuesday GMT and then have a vote on the theme wednesday and thursday...

then if there is a tie, we can have a second vote on those themes on friday and thus we will have a direction by the weekend!

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

How about a summery/chillout sort of thing? It fits the time of year and, if "Evidence of Autumn" is anything to judge by, downbeat seems to be what musicians on this site are best at making.

that's true. However, the 2006 comp. was called "Sounds for a Dirty Summer". No reason why it couldn't be summer-themed again, though. But seeing as this won't be done until later in the year, maybe something wintry?

Future Proof 07-25-2009 09:44 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

I'm down for a winter compilation, that sounds like fun :)

Besides, we all know that November 1st will turn into December 31st so by the time the entrants are truly ready, the season will be perfect. :P

Camiel 07-27-2009 12:50 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

LOL.

I think that winter is a good theme. *hums 'how winter kills'*

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

So is this the direction we're heading in? Winter?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Buji 07-28-2009 04:29 PM

Winter theme is good.

Anyone have any ideas for names for the compilation?

Longing for a little winter about now - it's 99F again.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

• Dark nights, Dirty Sounds

• Music from the grim

• Warmth in the winter

Gonna have to keep thinking about this!!

I kind of like "Dark Nights, Dirty Sounds". Or maybe a more wintery version, "Cold Dark Dirty Nights"?

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

We could use an Underworld lyric.

I quite like 'Sweet In Winter, Sweet In Rain' from Dirty Epic.
:)

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Heck yea, let's run that.

Now for the deadline... what should we set?

On a side note, I'm very excited about this. I'm actually writing a new song for the comp, already have started, and it's completely different from anything I've ever written. If Nine Inch Nails and Love Spirals Downwards had a baby, this is what their kid's first words would sound like.

"Sweet in winter, sweet in rain..."
i love it!

So, it's early-mid August now. Should we set maybe a late october deadline and see where we stand? I know we're going to end up extending it, but at least there's a date to shoot for?

Buji 08-07-2009 02:25 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Really cool, glad the name is approved, one of my favourite Underworld lyrics!

So far then:-

Dirty Compilation 2009 Name: 'Sweet In Winter, Sweet In Rain'

Submission Deadline (For Now!): Late October 09

I Better get working on a track now then!

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Good luck everyone!

Actually.. i dont know how the last one of these went, but it occured to me that we could all probably come together on a track or something.

I was looking at my twitter and saw that Yannick was wondering if people wanted to share ideas and collaborate using a site/programme called Drop box... (www.getdropbox.com).

Now i dont know anything about this site, and what it is capable of but perhaps there is a chance that we could all contribute collectively to either a single track and/or create a second "disc" if you will of remixes where each artist gets assigned one of the other artists submitted tracks to make a remix of. It would not only create an even more dynamic end product but also help us to learn more about what each person was trying to achieve with the music and also get to know each other on a musically professional level. It could be brilliant? but it could be a step too far....... so i think it should be mulled over for awhile and we all have a say on it. see if it is at the very least plausible.

One thing though... this part of the project would not come into play until all of the original material has been submitted or at least not until after the submission deadline.. that way we dont distract from the most important part of this which is the original album.

Also this is something that could be done well after the album has been released.. something as a suplement for those itching to start the 2010 album i guess!

but really, anybody think this is a good idea or is it a step to far?

Hmm, I'd be willing to give that a go. But even with dropbox I think it'd be a massive undertaking, everyone would have to break down their songs in some way to where the individual parts could be manipulated. Basically we're talking about lots of prep on the original artists' part, 500+ mb of audio to transfer and then the actual remixing. I don't know if everyone would follow through, but I'd be willing to remain cautiously optimistic.

"Cautiously optimistic" being the most important part there!!!

ha your right, and im happy you mentioned that because im terrible at getting huge plans in my headd and not thinking of the little important things like that...

... it would be a lot of prep..
