UP
Yet another great masterpiece from Pixar. Very emotional journey that has plenty of laughs (Kevin the snipe and Doug the talking dog especially) and enough going on visually to keep the kids entertained. The story pulls no punches and will have you on a roller coaster of emotions.
Watch this scene where "Kevin" the snipe shows up and starts acting protective....lol: >>>Click (and then select "HD")<<< |
Re: UP
Thing about Pixar - they take concepts that on paper don't appeal to me at all (e.g. Nemo, Wall-E) and just charm you nonetheless. "Up" is another in that line, but after reading the reviews, i'm looking forward to seeing this!

Re: UP
See it in 3D if you can. It's worth because in true Pixar fashion, it's a bit understated and subservient to the story, not just a flashy gimmick.

Re: UP
Funny story related to Pixar.
When I went to see the rat movie, alone (no biggy, really), during the scene where the chef boy is having a down moment or other and the whistling's going on, a young girl seated behind me, whom I've never met & most likely never will meet, went to my ear and said, "We're sorry." Much like everyone else, I have no idea what she was talking about. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE "UP" NONE-THE-LESS!!!! I mean, considering everyone's pretty much a simulation of anal fornication as a derogatory pun intended for humor as some individuals whose excrement has the smell of lavender my become offended if you say fraked i.e. fucked, at the moment, I could use some good laughs. aaaaaaand VIOLA!: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30966653/ I've also heard Jack In the Box has a new smoothie to calm you down. |
Re: UP
I saw it with my girlfriend who loves Pixar movies (not that I mind, as they're always pretty good). I really liked it and she was even moved to tears twice - there are some pretty powerful scenes there, and it transitions from drama to comedy pretty well. Gotta say I loved Doug the talking dog, great voice work on that one, nearly everything he said was funny. Also pretty amazing visually. Seemed like the adults were enjoying it more than the kids, which is pretty neat now that I'm grown up. Like the other Pixar movies it's destined to be a classic.

Re: UP
I caught this in 3D and loved it. The short subject before it was more of a laugh fest whereas "Up" was really adult at times but, for the most part, a great adventure story between an old man and a young boy scout who were driven by similar means. Yet another Pixar classic.

Re: UP
I liked it a lot! It's what i expected out of Pixar by now, which is basically something wonderful and amazing, but since the previews gave very little of any plot away, i felt as if i was going to be led into a very different kind of movie. maybe simple, slice-of-life (with one fantastical twist) kind of movie, maybe with "Straight Story" kind of vibes. certainly something that didnt feature an extremely rushed villain with zero dimension to muck it up with pointless adversity. you could even tell how much they could have gone into his character as opposed to excusing his sudden turn by being "already crazy." russel and carl are great together though, and the less complicated the movie was the more enjoyable it was. the alpha dog's voice was a great touch to diffuse a lot of the real menace out of a generally sweet movie like this, and a lot of the details like russel's confusion at his absent dad and the dogs' sudden turn around (because theres no such thing as an inherently bad domesticated dog) were very thoughtful. it felt like a very extended short, and one that was much better than the piss-poor one they gave us that the beginning of this one.
kinda in the lower half of pixar movies for me, but still the yearly highlight. |
Re: UP
agreed about the villain thing. That part of the movie didn't feel very well thought out IMO. It also sorta negates some of the effort they go to to show Carl as this frail old man who can barely walk without his stick, by having him running and jumping around like a 20-year old for much of the finale of the film. Also, I don't think it was ever explained why the villain guy had all these "intelligent" dogs. It was fun to have the dogs talk trough their collars, but then they were also flying airplanes...?? That seemed a bit random to me.
Still great fun overall though and all the other characters were great (esp Dug the dog and the crazy bird) :) |
Re: UP
Great craic was had with this movie...really enjoyed it!

Re: UP
Sad thing for me is, I have to wait for new releases at the video rental places to go to the .99 for 5 days. I'm poe. It must be something related to the voices in my head that I'm hearing according to the medical community.

Re: UP
horrible horrible movie!
this is one of the worst pixar films i have seen, why are they going downhill like this? ratattouile, and wall-e were just terrible also.. all my hopes are on toy story 3, and even more so on cars 2.... DONT LET ME DOWN PLEASE! be seeing you +1 |

ya. i'm a bit confused. ratatouille, wall-e and UP were practically my 3 favorite pixar films of all time!

negative-1, you must be joking right?
RIGHT? |

Though I have my doubts about Cars 2 and Monsters Inc 2 (even though TS2 tells me I needn't worry) |
Re: UP
Well, the first Cars was, in my opinion, the one kind of crappy movie Pixar has done. There are others I've not been a huge fan of, but I just can't seem to care about cars reenacting the old Michael J. Fox vehicle, "Doc Hollywood". So needless to say, I'm not too pumped about Cars 2.
Loved Up though. Fantastic characters and storytelling, although there were definitely some holes in the villain bits... |
Re: UP
Doug the dog was great. "Hi, my name is Doug. i LOVE you!"
and we got the littel Toy Story 3 teaser at the beginning too :) i noticed John Ratzenburger did the voice for the foreman at the beginning of the film (he's the voice of the pig in toy story). I think neg1 is in the minority here because the films he didnt like are the best pixar films recently according to ... well.. everyone :) Cars? not seen it. Did that get a cinema release in the EU? |
Re: UP
Cars is weak imo. But Wall-E and Up! are just fantastic. I consider Wall-E to be a perfect film; a perfect 5 stars.

================================================= ratatouille - weak story and plot about a rat being a chef? typical romance storyline... and the locale being in paris seemed cliche. yes, there was some nice visuals, but overall it didn't have the impact on me that 'toy story' and 'cars' did.. wall-e - a very heavy handed story with a political agenda. i didn't like the main characters or any of the supporting characters either... yes, i like robots. yes i like sci-fi, so that was ok... no, the weak 'romantic' element didn't grip me either, it was pretty stereotypical, and didn't resonate with me at all again, the visuals were a step up, but the humor, and storyline didn't appeal to me at all up - again, a weak storyline about a man and boy trying to get to a location? talking dogs? at least there wasn't a cliched romance involved in it.. and to top it off, the visuals didn't really match their previous quality either. ============================= look, i'm a big fan of computer animation, and i try to see EVERY single 2d/3d animated film that comes out, some resonate with me more than other.. toy story because it was first and novel to me, and the story was awesome. cars, because my favorite toys as a child were cars, and seeing them come to life really hit home with me about how much i loved playing with them and them having personalities... also i could relate to a lot of the characters in 'cars'.. i couldn't relate or find anything humorous or common in any of the other films i mentioned.. yes, i'm sure many people enjoyed them, and the stories were satisfying from your viewpoint, but to me them seemed rather vacous, or heavy-handed messages.. be seeing you +1 |
Re: UP
I'll never argue against Toy Story nor TS2. Both are great films. I'm shocked though, that someone would be so adamanently against what I consider an absolutely perfect movie, that of course being Wall-E. I know plenty of people that hate animated films because "they are just kids' movies." but clearly you do not fall into that category.
To each their own, I guess. :) |
Re: UP
Yeah, Cars is probably the weakest Pixar flick by a long way.
Haven't seen Up yet but it seems like it's going to be great. Wall-E, both Toy Stories, Monsters Inc & Ratatouille are all awesome and virtually perfect films. I didn't even know they were making Cars 2 (and couldn't care less probably) but Toy Story 3 and Monsters Inc 2 have me so excited I could shit |
Re: UP
Lets not forget Nemo. Fantastic.

Re: UP
Just saw this on a plane. I agree with the above comments about the villian subplot being a bit weak, and the fact that the ol' guy is running and jumping, not to mention dragging a floating house around, clashing with his crotchety characteristics at the start of the film. But hey - a balloon-lifted house? Suspension of reality!
Also, i was very impressed by how "adult" some of the subject matter was - more so than in other Pixar films i recall. I don't want to spoil it for those that haven't seen it, but there are a few weighty issues hinted at, that certainly moved me. But still, plenty cute and comical! |
Re: UP
I'm a big fan of the Presto, which was played before WALL-E:

Totally agree.....this was one of the best cartoon movies in a long time. |
Re: UP
here's some good discussions about bad messages from movies:
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/11...ge-4/#comments 9. No matter how appallingly bad conditions on Earth get, so long as there is one tiny plant on the planet, it can still be restored to its former beauty and sustainability (from WALL-E). In WALL-E, Earth is depicted as essentially one big desolate, deteriorated waste dump. Then WALL-E finds one tiny little green plant, and that is evidently enough to constitute proof that the planet can be reclaimed. That’s one small plant in the midst of millions of square miles of garbage and lifeless expanse. It kind of flies in the face of the desired message behind the film to imply that, no matter how badly we screw things up, one dinky little leafy green thing will constitute hope for all of humanity. later -1 |
