Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
I've been asked by someone at work to produce for them a mixtape/cd of some great dance music. It can't be anything too commercial (so your Born Slippys, Insomnias and Plastic Dreams etc. are ruled out) and I'd like it to be fairly recent (since 2000). It can't be too hard (no gabba etc.) and no dubstep. And it's got to be cool.
This is what I've come up with so far: Aphex Twin/Squarepusher/Vibert etc. (though I don't want it to be a best of Warp/Rephlex compilation!) Some of the funkier stuff from Venetian Snares Some Electro, think Etienne De Crecy, Miss Kittin A bit of Minimal, Hawtin, Villalobos, Kompakt type stuff. Mathew Johnson's Marionette (I love this song) BUT.... what else am I missing? What are you're favourite electronic tunes? Any decent recent remixes of classic songs? Help me out here! cheers v. |

Also, 'sci.fi.hi.fi mix Vol. 3' by Alex Smoke as well as 'Misch Masch Vol. III' by DJ Hell might prove inspirational. Quote:

Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
i'm not good at much in life. but one thing I am good at is making mix tapes for people. the key ingredient is empathy. this person you're making the mix for: how do they see the world? how do they see themselves? sounds cheesy, but it works.

My advice: I like a lot Detrimentalist from Venetian Snares, don't hesitate to put Eurocore MVP or Satjban on your compilation. + Radio Slave - Grindhouse (Dubfire "Terror Planet" Remix) |
Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
If you don't think it's going too far back Joey Beltram - Energy Flash is what jumps right into my head when I think Ultimate Electronica Mixtape.

Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
is your goal to educate or to entertain?

Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
primarily to educate, but in an entertaining way if that makes sense?
thanks for all the replies so far, keep em coming! |
Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
I haven't got any tips right now.. but I know I'd love to hear the tape when it's done. ;)

Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
Well, I finished it. It's not mixed as I haven't had time but the tracklisting is as follows.
In the end, I didn't really stick to the rules so much, and there's a bit too much Warp stuff on there. Also now it's done I can think of a few tracks I'd like to substitute for others. 1. Sally Shapiro - I'll Be By Your Side - Discokaine 2005 2. DMX Krew - You Can't Hide Your Love (Hidden Love Mix) - Rephlex 1997 3. Joey Beltram - Energy Flash - R&S 1991 4. Orbital - Chime - FFRR 1991 5. The Black Dog - Northern Electronic Soul Part 1 - Soma 2009 6. Underworld - Pearls Girl (Edit) - Wax Trax 1996 7. DJ Hell - Hellracer - International Deejay Gigolos 2009 8. Jeff Mills - The Bells - Axis 1996 9. LFO - LFO - Warp 1990 10. Squarepusher - My Red Hot Car - Warp 2001 11. Dice Man - Polygon Window - Warp 1992 12. Boards of Canada - Roygbiv - Warp 1998 13. Mathew Johnson - Marionette - Wagon Repair 2005 14. Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Song - Warp 1995 |
Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
Did you actually put it on a tape? Because that would be pretty awesome.

Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
Looks like a great compilation of classics and touchstone tracks :)
Hoefully, the listeners get inspired and it did serve some educational value into the tradition of electronic music, along with some more current, groundbreaking cuts. |
Re: Ultimate Electronica Mixtape
Who's the "faggot" Matthew Johnson refers to in his recording somewhere in one of his releases.
And, honestly, I didn't take personally myself, just never cared for his stuff much. Just curious, if anyone knows. |
