Somnopolis

I'm making an effort to get back into mix-making and releasing them sort of regularly. Here's one! This series is heavily inspired by the Underworld broadcasts of yore. Variously ambient, eccentric, dark, bleepy, bloopy.

Nice, varied tracklisting. Any mix with UW's "To Heal (and restore broken bodies)" is all right by me, but lots of other interesting tracks in there, too. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Somnopolis

New ambient/quiet mix, loosely themed around the idea of rain. Features a truly obnoxious attempt at mashing up Underworld and Vangelis.

http://www.andykhouri.com/somnopolis-02

I keep tinkering with other mixes. I used to like to make dance mixes but honestly the way Underworld mixed all their music and others together on their old broadcasts was so cool that I'm compelled to emulate it. Also, it's harder than mixing dance music.

Oh man, if you wanted some rain, Lenny Penne has literal rain for the first 1:30 before the beats come in, and then again for the last 2 minutes of the track.

True! But too many beats! Too exciting a track. I was trying to keep it downtempo. Like even Please Help Me is mashed with some NIN strings to keep it depressing.

Re: Somnopolis

Another one. All of these have a kind of sonic theme. This one is that sort of low-fi, downtempo breakbeat sound exemplified by DJ Shadow and Massive Attack back int he day, mixed with some complimentary stuff I think blends well.

It's harder to mix ambient stuff than dance stuff!

Not as such, but on my browser I can click the dropbox link on my site and play the file in my browser without downloading.

Thanks! That's basically the function I was going for.

Track 3 is from one of the Lemonworld broadcasts but right now I don't know which one. Years ago I broke out all those exclusive songs into separate files and didn't keep good notes on their provenance. I can find out when I get home.

I'm pretty sure it's the 'vocal interlude' before Little Speaker on the Underworld vs The Misterons 12.12.07 Lemonworld broadcast.
I love that 'story', I listened to it a lot when I was editing my Oblivion With Bells Tour Mixes as it was used at the start of Phonestrap 6 Autotrader 4 at one of the London Roundhouse gigs.
I would love to know who came up with this text (and the Bruce Lee Bullet story) and how?

It's a great mix by the way!

Yup, on both counts. Thanks.

They are several mixes I did that basically condensed the best (my opinion) versions of each track they played on the OWB tour Live Here Now cds.
I did it all on Audacity (with a limited understanding of Audacity) and I keep thinking I may have another go at a couple of the mixes with new techniques I've learnt in Audacity if I ever get the time!
They should still be available on the link in the dedicated thread.

Thanks very much! These are basically my attempt to do something like the old Underworld broadcasts so that any Dirties like them is the greatest measure of success.

Of note to Dirties, included in this is my attempt to seamlessly edit multiple versions of Jumbo and Nicodemus into a single track. I know they've been mixed by the group before but my favorite bits are in disparate recordings so I tried to make an Ultimate version.

This mix is an attempt to compile a collection of “closing” tracks, or tracks powerful enough to be album closers, and sequence them into a seamless listening experience with a beginning, middle and end. Sonically this is almost exactly half instrumental and half vocal, this is a seamless blend of deep synth pads, drowned beats, and the processed plucks of acoustic guitar strings.

Apple Lossless Version (399MB)
MP3 Version (187MB)

01. Depeche Mode: Barrel of a Gun (Underworld Soft Mix)
02. Hanz Zimmer & Benjamin Wallfisch: Someone Lived This
03. Lissie: Go Your Own Way
04. Dean Hurley: Interior Home by the Sea
05. Daft Punk: Within (Nicolas Jarr Remix)
06. Rob Dougan: Beautiful Things
07. Nine Inch Nails: A Warm Place
08. Darren Price & Underworld: Nicodemus/Jumbo (Kh Edit)
09. Vangelis: Desolation Path
10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: The Diamond Sea
11. Moby: Everloving
12. Underworld: Santiago Quatro
13. The Smashing Pumpkins: The Beginning is the End is the Beginning
14. New Order: Elegia
15. Underworld: Stagger
16. Queen: Forever
17. Billie Eilish: Listen Before I Go
18. Radiohead: True Love Waits
19: Underworld: Dirty Epic (Excerpt from ‘The Cutting Room Floor Mix’)
20. Nine Inch Nails: Find My Way (Oneohtrix Point Never Remix)

Hey all - thought you might like this DJ mix I made of tracks from the Hackers soundtrack, which compiles stuff from the original releases, the 25th anniversary reissue, and the original score. Includes a couple Underworlds of course. Nothing too fancy but some clever transitions, I think.

01. Orbital: Halcyon + On + On
02. Fluke: Absurd (Whitewash Edit)
03. Guy Pratt: One Combination
04. The Orb: Toxygene
05. Simon Boswell: City Of Data
06. BT: Remember
07. Leftfield: Open Up
08. Empirion: Narcotic Influence 2
09. Underworld: Cherry Pie
10. Simon Boswell: Hackers Suite
11. Leftfield: Original
12. Kruder & Dorfmeister: Original Bedroom Rockers
13. Underworld: Cowgirl
14. Guy Pratt featuring David Gilmour: Grand Central Station
15. Leftfield: Inspection (Check One)
16. Massive Attack: Protection
17. BT: Godspeed
18. The Prodigy: One Love
19. The Prodigy: Voodoo People

Nice mix! Takes me back to the "golden age"(?!) when Electronica was poised to take over the world! Well, maybe not, but the tracks represent some of my favorite artists and a period when i was just hitting the tip of the iceberg of electro music.
Enjoyed the mix very much - some quality transitions, indeed (except the rough cut and slowdown into "toxygene", but that vocal sample is always abrupt).
Thanks so much for the share!

Thanks so much! I have been mainly mixing live on Mixlr these days. I keep thinking I'm going to consolidate the best sequences I come up with into a recorded mix for the site, but I never get around to it. But I "spin" a few times a week usually at https://mixlr.com/khouri

That's good feedback! Honestly I'm thrilled you listened so closely. I did that rough cut on purpose because the Guy Pratt track ends so abruptly, and because I thought it matched the style of the film, which intercuts a lot of old films and television in the midst of the main narrative, and the samples in Toxygene reminded me of that effect. But I can completely see how a listener might hear it as a dubious transition.

Re: Somnopolis

Finally recorded a proper, final version of my fan fiction version of Drift. It's not just my favorite tracks stuffed into a CD-length running order, but a painstaking assemblage of what sounds, to me, like a traditional Underworld album with a beginning, middle, and end.

To that end, most of the songs are segued into each other or otherwise edited in some way, most especially track 3 which is a (I hope) more or less seamless mashup of several tracks, in the tradition of Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love; it just made sense to me this way. I also made this album art using imagery from Simon Taylor's Drift videos and the font he used.

Hope you guys will give this a listen! Streaming and download links at :https://www.andykhouri.com/drift-series-1-kh

Re: Somnopolis

This is an awesome mix! No easy task to select from so many tracks in series 1, but you've formed a quality album. Tracks 1-4 are a strong opening run . Your mixed track 3 is wonderful...I'm not huge on Mile Bush Pride, but it sounds great over Give Me The Room. 5 and 6 form a quality downtemp interval. Pretty strong and tight transitions, too (though maybe a little weird clashing of melody between 6 and 7 but nothing bad...melodic transitions can be beautiful, but harder to pull off in my opinion than straight beatmatching). Interesting to close with Toluca Stars, but it makes a lot of sense listening to the lyrics as gratitude and hope.
As I wrote in the dirty review of series 1, there are nearly infinite combinations of the tracks, and my dream album would be different than someone else's, but you've picked a lot of winners and recontextualized some tracks that I wasn't in love with as they stood, but they definitely work here. Thanks for mixing and sharing!

khouri 11-26-2020 10:21 PM

Re: Somnopolis

Thank you!

Toluca Stars always stood out to me; reminded me of album closers like M.E., Stagger. Best Mamgu Ever, and Luetin... just something kind of at once melancholic and uplifting about it.

Hey Dirts - I know some of you are NIN fans, so maybe you'll enjoy this. What I've done is basically re-edit nearly every song in this new sequence of The Fragile, inspired by some of the more electronica-sounding material that was unearthed on the Deviations 1 project released a few years back. It seemed to suggest an alternate universe where the album was more traditional in sound, and just for fun I made this kind of fan fiction version of what that might sound like.
