Somnopolis
I'm making an effort to get back into mix-making and releasing them sort of regularly. Here's one! This series is heavily inspired by the Underworld broadcasts of yore. Variously ambient, eccentric, dark, bleepy, bloopy.

Re: Somnopolis
Nice, varied tracklisting. Any mix with UW's "To Heal (and restore broken bodies)" is all right by me, but lots of other interesting tracks in there, too. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Somnopolis
New ambient/quiet mix, loosely themed around the idea of rain. Features a truly obnoxious attempt at mashing up Underworld and Vangelis.
http://www.andykhouri.com/somnopolis-02 I keep tinkering with other mixes. I used to like to make dance mixes but honestly the way Underworld mixed all their music and others together on their old broadcasts was so cool that I'm compelled to emulate it. Also, it's harder than mixing dance music. |
Re: Somnopolis
Oh man, if you wanted some rain, Lenny Penne has literal rain for the first 1:30 before the beats come in, and then again for the last 2 minutes of the track.

Re: Somnopolis
Another one. All of these have a kind of sonic theme. This one is that sort of low-fi, downtempo breakbeat sound exemplified by DJ Shadow and Massive Attack back int he day, mixed with some complimentary stuff I think blends well.

Re: Somnopolis
This was a nice soundtrack to a quiet late night working on some stuff. Thanks. Where did track 3 come from?

Track 3 is from one of the Lemonworld broadcasts but right now I don't know which one. Years ago I broke out all those exclusive songs into separate files and didn't keep good notes on their provenance. I can find out when I get home. |
Re: Somnopolis
I'm pretty sure it's the 'vocal interlude' before Little Speaker on the Underworld vs The Misterons 12.12.07 Lemonworld broadcast.
I love that 'story', I listened to it a lot when I was editing my Oblivion With Bells Tour Mixes as it was used at the start of Phonestrap 6 Autotrader 4 at one of the London Roundhouse gigs. I would love to know who came up with this text (and the Bruce Lee Bullet story) and how? It's a great mix by the way! |

I did it all on Audacity (with a limited understanding of Audacity) and I keep thinking I may have another go at a couple of the mixes with new techniques I've learnt in Audacity if I ever get the time! They should still be available on the link in the dedicated thread. |
Re: Somnopolis
The tracklists on these look amazing! Downloading them all now in lossless and will give them a go. Thanks a lot!

Of note to Dirties, included in this is my attempt to seamlessly edit multiple versions of Jumbo and Nicodemus into a single track. I know they've been mixed by the group before but my favorite bits are in disparate recordings so I tried to make an Ultimate version. This mix is an attempt to compile a collection of “closing” tracks, or tracks powerful enough to be album closers, and sequence them into a seamless listening experience with a beginning, middle and end. Sonically this is almost exactly half instrumental and half vocal, this is a seamless blend of deep synth pads, drowned beats, and the processed plucks of acoustic guitar strings. Hey all - thought you might like this DJ mix I made of tracks from the Hackers soundtrack, which compiles stuff from the original releases, the 25th anniversary reissue, and the original score. Includes a couple Underworlds of course. Nothing too fancy but some clever transitions, I think.

Re: Somnopolis
Nice mix! Takes me back to the "golden age"(?!) when Electronica was poised to take over the world! Well, maybe not, but the tracks represent some of my favorite artists and a period when i was just hitting the tip of the iceberg of electro music.
Enjoyed the mix very much - some quality transitions, indeed (except the rough cut and slowdown into "toxygene", but that vocal sample is always abrupt). Thanks so much for the share! |

Re: Somnopolis
Finally recorded a proper, final version of my fan fiction version of Drift. It's not just my favorite tracks stuffed into a CD-length running order, but a painstaking assemblage of what sounds, to me, like a traditional Underworld album with a beginning, middle, and end.
To that end, most of the songs are segued into each other or otherwise edited in some way, most especially track 3 which is a (I hope) more or less seamless mashup of several tracks, in the tradition of Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love; it just made sense to me this way. I also made this album art using imagery from Simon Taylor's Drift videos and the font he used. Hope you guys will give this a listen! Re: Somnopolis
This is an awesome mix! No easy task to select from so many tracks in series 1, but you've formed a quality album. Tracks 1-4 are a strong opening run . Your mixed track 3 is wonderful...I'm not huge on Mile Bush Pride, but it sounds great over Give Me The Room. 5 and 6 form a quality downtemp interval. Pretty strong and tight transitions, too (though maybe a little weird clashing of melody between 6 and 7 but nothing bad...melodic transitions can be beautiful, but harder to pull off in my opinion than straight beatmatching). Interesting to close with Toluca Stars, but it makes a lot of sense listening to the lyrics as gratitude and hope.
As I wrote in the dirty review of series 1, there are nearly infinite combinations of the tracks, and my dream album would be different than someone else's, but you've picked a lot of winners and recontextualized some tracks that I wasn't in love with as they stood, but they definitely work here. Thanks for mixing and sharing! |
Re: Somnopolis
Thank you!
Toluca Stars always stood out to me; reminded me of album closers like M.E., Stagger. Best Mamgu Ever, and Luetin... just something kind of at once melancholic and uplifting about it. |

Hey Dirts - I know some of you are NIN fans, so maybe you'll enjoy this. What I've done is basically re-edit nearly every song in this new sequence of The Fragile, inspired by some of the more electronica-sounding material that was unearthed on the Deviations 1 project released a few years back. It seemed to suggest an alternate universe where the album was more traditional in sound, and just for fun I made this kind of fan fiction version of what that might sound like.
