Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
some immediate differences on first glance:
BYTWB now runs for 10 mins Appleshine, Toluca Stars and Tree and Two Chairs still listed as (Film Edit) This Must Be Drum Street runs for 7 and a half minutes Appleshine Continuum is cut to 34 minutes there are other subtle differences here and there (a minute or seconds added or cut off, minor song title adjustments on the unreleased material), but a proper dissection on release will be best. 40 songs running close to 6 hours. this is insane. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
More tweaks/versions on these also:
Another Silent Way Dexters Chalk Universe of Can When Back Threat of Rain Brussels Pinetum Appleshine Continuum got cut to accommodate the CD runtime. Quote:

Anyone wanting to get Rebel Tech will have to buy it separately, then?

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
the first episode is so much different than the one that got released a year ago, damn
all of 'em besides #4 are between 50-60 minutes in length. so you can't really call 'em EPs anymore, they're about as long as anything they've done since Beacoup Fish. it's a proper quintuple album, plus a full CD of collabs with the Necks. I could not be more excited for this - all the unreleased tracks add up to nearly 2 hours |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
ok, its almost time to add this to the listings.
this is going to be fun. later -1 |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
After listening to everything released so far for a few days in the car, I’m convinced that if Drift were a traditional Underworld than “Universe...” would be the opening track. It just has that brooding, building intensity that all UW albums begin with. It sets a kind of sonic statement for the experience to come.

Yeah, the game of "compile your perfect Drift Episode 1" is going to be fun!

Unlike the box set, the digital Series 1 does not include the Sampler Edition, so yes, if you want those unique tracks, you'll have to buy them separately. Though you'll be able to buy just the individual unique tracks you want and not all of them necessarily. |

I'm still hoping all the new tracks compile into a full album that flows well. The 10 new tracks without the new Necks collab (which is 31 minutes and probably best as part of that disc) comes out to about 68 minutes which is prime UW album territory for me. :) |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
We’re definitely going to need a separate thread just for all the fan compilations. I intend to make some artwork for mine and maybe even segue some tracks together. Also want to give it a name along the lines of LOVE SPACE etc.

Is the Digital edition in the official shop just the Sampler Edition? It seems somewhat unclear but given the description and the price I'm assuming Sampler. But if anyone knows...

A Drift Remix series would be great!
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Yes, remixes have been notably absent so far, given that in the last 15 years we've had more outsider remixes than original tracks.
(I'm not complaining about the lack of them so far) |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
i have... never been excited about people remixing underworld. as much as i love paul woolford and all, i just can't give a shit. plus remixes loused up the BF box set.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
This has leaked. Just starting to go through it now. So far:
Another Silent Way and Low Between Zebras are the same as the EP, except they're not segued into each other. A Very Silent Way is the same as on the EP. Dexter's Chalk has a longer, non-segued ending, and that is also still a different ending from the film version. Also, the lyric "atishoo, atishoo" starting at 2:00 has been truncated (thanks, potatobroth). Universe of Can When Back gets the most changes from Episode 1, and I don't think it's for the better. They've added an industrial steam hissing sound (which I like) that comes up periodically starting at 3:19. Lewis' crazy sax contribution (one of my favorite parts) has been significantly truncated. It no longer comes in at 3:05, but later at 3:36. From 4:05, the entire ending diverges, and there is a small violin bit at the very end that was not previously heard. Another Silent Way / Drift Poem / Better Than Diamonds includes "you and me, nothing's a drag" near the end, but not in the same way as heard on the Reykjavik teaser. It includes a different Drift Poem passage from Matthew Trevannion. It also has the harmonizing chorus voices as heard in the Drift trailer that had not been released yet. I'm not sure if those chorus voices are part of Better Than Diamonds or Another Silent Way. Karl says "better than diamonds" a lot at the end. It also has Ooooo’s that are like the ones heard in Pinetum. Brilliant Yes That Would Be gains a new extended coda, which has a different texture since it uses a piano instead of synth, but still fits the mood. If Brilliant Yes That Would Be is melancholic, then One True Piano Need Hand is its brooding, sinister cousin. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
yea I was under the impression that all 7 discs would be available to download digitally if you preordered the box set, oh well
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
cool! was assuming on/around the 22nd, so hopefully will have the box a week earlier than that.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Appleshine (Film Edit) is mostly the same, but technically it's a couple seconds longer with a later fade out. Also, the hi-hat through much of the track has been lowered in the mix.
Molehill is the same as the EP Threat of Rain is different from the EP only in that it fades out about 9 seconds sooner. Brussels has received the most significant changes from Episode 2. First, that fat bassline (one of my favorite parts) has been thinned out (boo). More reverb effects have been added to Karl's vocals throughout. Starting at 2:20, there are a couple noodling synth lines that have been enhanced and brought to the fore of the mix. A new synth outro begins at 3:55 and continues through the extended ending of the song. Soniamode (Aditya Game Version) is identical to the single released earlier. Appleshine Continuum has been cut so that it can fit into the runtime of the final CD, but it's not just a straight cut or a fade edit. It comes in at the 13:13 mark on the original, but not all the elements are immediately present. Most notably all The Necks' tracks are suppressed and come in gradually over the next minute or two. One other change I noticed is a hi-hat which is very prominent throughout the original track has been pushed way back in the mix. Appleshine (All the Lights) is just Appleshine with some weird Karl lyrics on it. Roof Off - an interesting, loping track. I'll have to listen to this a few more times. |

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Yet another version of Dune. On the album version, there are 3 sections, at 8:13-8:26, 9:08-9:22, and 10:03-10:17, where Rick has put a new, interrupted drum pattern to break up the flow, compared to the EP version.
Custard Speedtalk and Poet Cat appear identical to the EP versions. This Must Be Drum Street, lots of changes. Loses its 8-count kick drum intro. New guitar drone starting at 0:44. Starting at 3:24, Karl becomes a less pushy salesman, as every other instance of "Do you want to buy my car?" is dropped. A new coda begins at 5:43. Pinetum appears to be identical up to the point the original fades out and the new one continues with an extended outro for another minute and a half to a proper ending. That is, the one included with Episode 3 appears to be a fade-out edit of the full track included in Series 1. I'm not sure what Do Breakers Trip is, but I think I hate it even more than I hate Molehill. I can't imagine intentionally wanting to listen to this again. Seven Music Drone, what a great groove. I bet it would have been highly lauded if it'd been released as one of the weekly tracks. I'm sure it will also get many comparisons to Twenty Three Blue. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Thanks for listing the differences. Much appreciated.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Got my disc 1 download email. Only 320 mp3s it seems even though the album name on the tracks themselves is "DRIFT Series 1 HD-Audio Download". It'll do for now. I can wait until the actual boxset arrives.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Episode 4 sees the fewest changes. Listen to Their No, Schiphol Test, Hundred Weight Hammer, Doris, Altitude Dub, and Border Country all appear to be the same as the EP release.
Big Bear is an interesting groove. Reminds of Beebop Hurry for some reason. I'd like to give this a few more listens. My son has a stuffed animal named Big Bear, so it's a little weird to me to have a song named after him. |

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
i've yet to listen to and dissect the entire Series 1 release, but i immediately have to note that the Another Silent Way medley is remarkable. i firmly believe that is the craziest track they have made in a long time. ASW is already one of my most favourite DRIFT tracks, but in this continuous form (a return to the prolific slashed title tracks from the 90s!) with all these wild spoken word bits ("Better Than Diamonds" is going to be stuck in my head for a long time), it's a completely new beast. i looked forward to the Reykjavik snippet the most and whilst it hasn't been entirely replicated in this definitive form, i couldn't be any more satisfied.
