Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Preface: I love that we're getting 40 songs from underworld, including a bunch of new stuff, CD quality, book, lovely package, my favorite band, etc. etc.
Text: the sampler cover is my least favorite Underworld design. I find it actually off-putting. And I love dogs. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019

re: the cover
After SO MANY years of inspiring cutting edge cover design, i have no words for this cover. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Is this the first Underworld cover since John Warwicker left Tomato?
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
UW and team just laughing at us roundtable-style over how much we'll hate this when they decided on it.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
i think the art direction has suffered from quite some time now.
the oblivion with bells era, which was a nod back to their first album look, was pretty good. the riverrun era was awesome, but it was great typesetting look which was done also. never did like the two months off, a hundred days off era or most of anything after that. later -1 |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I kinda liked the Barking cover. not exactly easy on the eyes but its a fun one to stare at for a while
BBWFASF cover is a bit blah to me. nice but doesn't have the "Underworld" style to it the artwork for the Drift series is strange. it feels like the stuff that Microsoft automatically puts on your lock screen. or maybe the still images they use to show off TVs in-store. that said I'd say LCD Soundsystem's American Dream is still the low watermark for this sort of thing :) |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I loved the Oblivion/RiverRun era of art coming out of Tomato/Warwicker. You can see a ton of it in the Books of Jam from the time. I wasn't in love with the AHDO or Barking looks, but they did have a distinctive look and a thoughtfulness to how they were deployed. I thought Barbara was quite nice, which I gather was Simon Taylor's doing. I think some of Simon's work on the Drift videos has been excellent but I'm truly not getting what they're going for with the sleeve art. All the graphic design for this stuff feels rushed and amateurish, which breaks my heart to say.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I love the Drift artwork (except the album cover). All the other artworks for the Drift EPs/singles/songs are excellent. I hope these cover arts will be in the book!
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I found the Barbara artwork a bit disappointing because I could imagine it as a cover for a huge number of artists, which is something that had never happened with Underworld before. Their art always has a certain idiosyncratic 'oddness' to it which was lacking in the Barbara cover, and also to an extent the Drift cover, although it does have a certain 'er, what?' charm to it in itself.

Drift episode art has had an identity given the italicised common font and square photo. It's very "in your face" or bold, and so is the sampler cover. But the dog is just sort of random, and im still bothered that it's right (your left) shoulder doesn't show through the R. Not s great compositing job. I'd rather the artwork feature something interesting from one if Taylor's videos. Lots of cool images in there that better fit the music than a happy (?) dog. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
The Drift book is stunning! And it has artworks for the Drift tracks as I wished.

that book looks insane, way more than what I expected
i'm guessing the rest of the liner notes are gonna be in there? |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Yeah, that looks like a hell of a lot of detail, really excited to get it.
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
as far as the dog references go.
it seems to be a long running theme in their work. so it's not really that surprising its on the cover. later -1 |

Apologies if this is repeated info but it just came out on The Necks’ mailing list:

Looks like the release date has been pushed back again. Just received an email from Amazon UK with the following:
Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date:The page for the Box Set now shows a November 22 release date. Sigh... |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Okay but
Are we still getting digital downloads of this on nov 1 or not |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
While we're all waiting until the new release date...
One thing I'm surprised I haven't seen much chatter on this thread about is how many new tracks we are getting with the box set. I think those that have been following along and got/bought the EP's as they came out are probably used to them now and these new tracks will probably continue to feel like extras (though I hope they fit each disc theme and flow well together). We're no longer getting the condensed "new album" version of Drift with the proposed reworkings turning into a sampler now, but with 11 unheard new tracks there's a good chance of a brand new album waiting in there. I'm planning to make my own "Drift Songs" album out of these new tracks, even if a couple don't make it (like possibly the third Necks collaboration). Anyone else excited by this prospect of a whole new album worth of material hidden in the box set (especially with the hyped Two Arrows)? |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
probably because we don't know anything about them yet! there was one acapella bit in a Drift preview that didn't get released, so maybe that's one. I would guess "Appleshiner" is the coda bit of "Appleshine" which, judging by the times on iTunes, got lopped off.
tbh it's kind of nuts to think there's worthwhile stuff that wasn't released and isn't being saved for Drift 2, though as we all know the "unreleased" UW tracks are usually quite good. the fact that they aren't listed as "bonus tracks" gives me some optimism since that means they're meant to be part of the EP and aren't just half-finished stuff. as for the release date...I haven't gotten an email yet, idk if they plan to make an official announcement tomorrow. the fact that it's been pushed exactly 3 weeks is...curious. if they're still tweaking things that's probably a good sign for the final project. I do wonder if there are going to be a lot of small tweaks, the same way there was between the single releases and the EPs |

I think it’s great. If I’m doing my addition correctly I think we’re getting 40 songs altogether. That’s basically unheard of.

Not surprised that the date's been pushed back, they only got the test books through last week. Much as I'm disappointed I won't be getting this lovely thing through sooner, it does give me opportunity to get the new Winged Victory for the Sullen album on the 1st now! |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
yeah, im pretty lost with regards to the release of this. So the date has changed? do we still not know if there's a full digital release?

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
if the box/release is delayed, they're not alone. The chemical brothers surrender box was originally advertised for an october release, and is now also 22 nov. coincidentally, I've had an email today regarding Ludovico Einaudi's similar boxset (seven days walking, with 7 new albums in a box) that was advertised as being due 20 sept, then 1 nov, and now again 22 nov - my postmans back is gonna hurt that day!
On the speculation of what happens next, well, we had mention of there being 40 or 50 or more tracks R&K had (such as the interview with Iggy), and that's without taking into account anything else they have created since. Also, they only showed him the 40/50 tracks, there would've been other works in progress one assumes? So for me, drift 2 isn't that much of a surprise, but I'm wondering when we might get a teaser/trailer for it? Will they wait til after christmas? After the december shows? Or will they also facilitate a new launch? apropos of nothing, I've also been unable to buy quorn mince anywhere for a few weeks. I wonder if these myriad of delays, and the quorn issue are a symptom of brexit being a farce? ;) |

my guess is they're still tweaking the final mixes. that would be why we don't have the track times on the actual EPs yet. |

Been a long time since I've waited for an email this anxiously.
what's the storyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-uh. wonder if they're changing the tracklist |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Wild guess: uncleared sample?
