So, the karaoke version you have to sing your own la-la-la-la-la? Seems to have a lot of cowbell in it btw.

Not enough. Never enough. Always need for more cowbell. Always.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

well,

i FINALLY got around to hearing the entire soundtrack
and the underworld parts..

but still haven't seen the opening ceremony yet (will
get around to it)..

i'm disappointed in a lot of the underworld tracks-
-----
- most of them are way too short
- most of them don't even sound like the originals,
i really wanted to hear what they would do to dirty epic,
dark and long, confusion the waitress, etc..
- the longer tracks, like 'rez' didn't need yet another remix

even the too main original tracks, seemed good for bits,
but i don't like the vocals or the choral parts.. oh well...

i would like to put the blame on high contrast for messing
up all the mixes.. but at least they took a very bad stab
at them..

hopefully, the full versions or better versions will surface
someday..

AFAIK, this is the first official remix of Rez. And I rather like it.

Oh yeah I am totally addicted to it, the throbbing beat and airy textures make it very pleasing. I particularly like the way the melody switches from the piano to the "oscar" synth sound and back again.

An obvious, but (so far as I can see) unanswered question:

Where exactly was Karl's involvement?

It seems to be a Rick-only project for the soundtrack, and Darren & High Contrast for the flag parade music.

Im certain Karl's entry on uwlive from the same day is referring to this radio broadcast, and in particular the reference of Rick Smith being described as a "genius":

I recall reading in one of the endless string of articles about the opening ceremonies that Karl wrote the lyrics for Caliban's Dream, inspired by a collection of great British poems provided to him by Danny Boyle.

Been loving "And I Will Kiss" and "Caliban's Dream".... would that UW or High Contrast would post some full, unmixed versions of the remixes from the Athlete's Parade segment for DL....

i know there was a post to the High Contrast Blog earlier, but he's written a few bits since on his Olympic involvement with UW

see here: Part 1

Part 2
Part 3

whatever you old moany bastards say about his mixing of UW he's been involved is involved and is good friends with UW...

UW are not the same band musically as they were - they've evolved, move on and enoy and celebrate UW's new phase with HC and the rest of the people they work with... its a journey you can be on it or not... just enjoy :)

Speaking of High Contrast, he is releasing an EP of his Olympic contributions on Monday, Aug. 27. It contains full, unmixed versions of all the songs, including the ones that didn't make it onto the soundtrack album, such as the countdown song that samples "Baba O'Riley".

1. The Road Goes On Forever (One Minute To Midnight Extended Mix) - 3:48
2. Ghost Dance (NHS MIX) - 3:31
3. Reach (NHS MIX) - 6:28
4. Four Years (NHS MIX) - 5:41
5. Strutter (NHS MIX) - 3:39

Is there a physical release? Or is it a digital only release?

I haven't seen any mention of a physical release, so I think it's digital only.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

Thanks.
High Contrast has released a fair bit more than I realised.
I thought he was mainly DnB. I really liked his stuff for the opening ceremony, as well as scribble.
What would people recommend of his releases? Specifically stuff like the opening ceremony stuff.

TheBang 09-04-2012 12:27 PM

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

He is mainly DnB. I'm not familiar with most of his other work, but based on his fans' comments regarding this Olympic release, this work is atypical of his usual output.

"And I Will Kiss" is the finest reminder of why I love Underworld in quite some time.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

One of the things I love most about these guys is all the reuse of sounds in new situations and projects. I'm listening the Frankenstein soundtrack for the first time and just found that Dawn of Eden contains the female vocals that would get reused later to great effect in And I Will Kiss/Caliban's Dream, not to mention all the reused stuff from the riverrun. Gorgeous. Thanks boys!

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

Does anyone have this promo ? The track listing is different, with all UW tracks on the last half of cd 2 (except the 2 made for the event). I was wondering if the tracks would be longer / mixed in a different way (though they have the same order as on the official release. Anyway, it would make for a long Underworld medley, except for the Traktor track closing the cd.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

Hmm Interesting, it would sound a bit strange if, for example, Dirty Epic faded into High Contrast - The Long Way Home for the last few seconds. There was also a Caliban's Dream / And I Will Kiss Promo which I lost out on a few months back. There are various edits on it.

TheBang 11-11-2014 12:11 PM

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

Yes, I got it. The short answer is, don't bother. I detailed everything in the Discogs entry:

http://www.discogs.com/release/5917088

Basically, Disc 1 has a different running order, but is otherwise the same as the retail album. Disc 2 is identical to the retail album (despite the cover). I was totally hoping for unmixed versions of the UW tracks, but no such luck. It looks like someone just listed the tracks on the cover in artist alphabetical order for some reason.

The Caliban's Dream/And I Will Kiss promo is worth it if you want those radio edits for the tracks.

Re: Isles of Wonder - Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

wondering whether despite the radio edits etc, of the two 'NEW' tracks used for the Olympics if Rick had any old outtakes / stems / tracks that didn't make it to the Ceremony

i can't believe they only wrote two new pieces for Isles of Wonder and that was it...

wonder if Mr Smith might share someday something else from that period...

I'd also like to see the High Contrast remixes in full versions rather than the mixed edits they used in the Ceremony itself... these must exist also...

i tried HC but he wasn't forthcoming :p

For sure. I really like the Rez remix, and would love to have an unmixed version of that.
