Janie gets her UW mojo back at last! :D

Loving
this new version. Was it really nearly 5 years ago that we first heard YDS in Amsterdam? Jebus.

I really love the way we can follow a tune through from a WiP to the final full production version - BB was another one of those, from its early days as Biro.

So excited now.

Like stated earlier, if UW just released a fancy studio version of YDS everyone would be grumbling, if they release something new and different everyone grumbles cause it's not what they originally expected/ hoped for. There's nothing wrong with this new track, it's going to grow on most of yall just fine (especially the long version I'd imagine). Also, there's nothing wrong with Drum and Bass music!!! Now you pesky fuckers complain about the beats and so UW will read the responses here and decide that they don't want to do any more DnB (if they even do actually read what you "morans" think).:D

YEAH!!!!

Sudden realisation: during the break, that female voice that speaks - "elevators. Bad boy." Isn't that the same voice that does the spoken-word in the beginning of 'Two Months Off'? I wonder who it belongs to - maybe a friend or one of Rick or Karl's partners?

(Speaking of which: I know Rick's married, but is Karl?)

Yeah, she's Juanita, whom the STITI track was also named after.. that's also her voice on Little Speaker. I think she works at Tomato maybe? (my UW trivia is not up to scratch..)

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

The Radio Edit is an abomination. Sorry, but it does not capture the tune at all! I don't think that version will help the tune and sales. I think maybe Underworld could've got away with making a "Radio Edit" that went on for about 5mins and made it purely a shorter version of the main version and it would work better.

I hated the radio edit when I heard it. I thought that they had ruined one of my fav live tunes, "You Do Scribble'. I've just listened to the full length (Tongy infested) version and I LOVE it!! Big sigh of relief on hearing it, I can tell you.

Got to get a full quality, full length version of this!

Lately what i'm loving most about this track are the layered vocals. Such a joyful melody with several Karls singing in harmony!

The full version is brilliant. It sounds like what it is. An Underworld song, made by Underworld in collaboration with High Contrast. It's a big summer anthem.

When can I buy the fucking thing!?

The full version is in full effect. The build is killer, the breakdown even more so. The radio edit does not do this song justice at all. It's nice to see Juanita back properly as well.

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

Just felt like chiming in here -- the single isn't bad, I've been desperately digging to find the full length (...and this would be your que to PM me, if you have it in any way shape or form) but I think they did a wonderful job with this song.

First things first, the original ideas of YDS from the live show, sorry to say, were a bit short of the mark. For one, the staccato synths, gorgeous at first, ended up becoming a bit tedious and repetitive. And for two, I hadn't heard a single live performance with Karl in it where I thought to myself, "WOW did he add something to this track!" In this revision though he adds only what the song needs, just something simple and this is refreshing, especially since I can think of more than a couple of UW songs where they were going in the right direction until KH got in the mix and started on with his cerebral word associative. Also as Holden noted, the vocal layering is brilliant. In short, this song needed Karl to just be a singer, and Karl delivered.

Second, this melody is gorgeous. There is so much hope and joy in this track which is such a stark contrast from almost everything they've worked on since 2001, with the wonderfully optimistic, lovey-dovey Two Months Off. I'm not saying that dark, gloomy and melancholy isn't acceptable, I'm only saying that this is refreshing.

Third, god forbid that Underworld create a song that sounds poppy. But I would be careful not to make that judgement too early, because those opinions are being generated off of a radio single. If the full length is just as accessible to people that aren't hardcore fans then so be it -- in my personal opinion, they have just made a song then that is emotive, moving and wide-reaching. Which is fine.

Fourth, so maybe the beat isn't the most unique thing that's ever came from Lemonworld. Then again though, I think it's a bit presumptuous to think that UW can re-invent the wheel every time they sit down and work, or to think that they actually are trying to do that.

The best thing about this track is simply that it made me happy, it made me want to dance and it made me believe that after 30 years of working together, Underworld still have something to offer. You want to know what the biggest disappointment was for me -- buying OWB and realizing that I'm listening to a dance act that doesn't make me want to dance anymore. I wrote them off then... but now I want back in. I can't wait for the new album!

Sorry for the TLDR!

BrotherLovesDub 05-25-2010 03:23 PM

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

The beat sounds like it was made more generic with the input of High Contrast. I assume they wanted it to be the same simple beat that 99% of DnB is using now so dimwitted DnB dj's will pick it up and play it. I'm convinced the remix by Netsky is going to crush the original. Netsky's album crushes anything High Contrast has done, so it's possible.

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

YDS and Scribble are two separate tracks. Think "Cherry Pie" and "Rowla" - they share elements but are very different animals. Or the set of "born slippies" or "dark and longs", or more recently "phonestraps" and "always loved a films". Underworld has a history of riffing on a style or melody. I've full confidence that the versions they release are those that they want to get heard.

"Scribble" is a joyous chunk of summer. "YDS" has bridged many a live track, but outside the live audience and fan network, it doesn't have nearly the effect as this new single. imho.

yeah i was thinking the other day that UW throws away more creative ingenuity than most artists create in a lifetime. their tracks evolve and evolve and evolve and it's hard to let go of previous iterations because sometimes what they discard is, to fans, pure gold.

can't think of another artist like that.

Completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, but Euro Zero Zero and Antistar are two of my favourite MA tunes... props for the good taste!

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

I don't know why this only occurred to me just now, but is there any reason "You Do Scribble" can't be a B-side of "Scribble"? Underworld used to own this format: Dark & Long EP/single, Dirty Epic/Cowgirl, Pearls Girl, etc. That would be the perfect solution and make everybody happy.

taoyoyo 05-28-2010 05:25 PM

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

Maybe 'You Do' has been completely lost now?

I'm not minding though, after my initial shock 'Scribble' is my favorite thing in a long time... even the single edit makes sense now. It's pure pop but it's glorious! :)

A studio version of YDS would just be the icing on the cake for the new album.

Re: TONIGHT... Scribble - New Single

Having YDS on the single/EP would be marvellous, but it's been so long since we've had more than just the occasional b-side that I've given up on the Dark & Long format.
