Now you’re getting into elitism & musical snobbery – why shouldn’t an ‘electronic’ label like Warp go out & sign guitar bands..? Especially when they’re as good as MaximoPark are :)

I don’t know the exact figures but I wouldn’t be surprised if MaximoPark were now Warp’s best-selling act. And the money they make from that will enable them to keep signing less commercial eclectic electronic acts – which will obviously keep the less open minded Warp fans happy ;)

because we need more AFX and Autechre...hehehe, just kidding.

i was a bit disappointed with recent warp releases and the direction they are going to take. while the first gravenhurst album still somehow fitted in Warp's catalogue, Maximo Park were, and still are, unrepresentative for Warp as a label IMO. that's not supposed to sound snobby, but there was a time when you could buy every warp album without pre-listening.

on the one hand i like the fact that a label tries to evolve by signing different artists, warp has done that before and has a rather widespread spectrum that goes far beyond Aphex and the like, but on the other hand, bands like Maximo Park, who have nothing to do with electronic music at all and are featured in teen magazines, don't add up to the credibility of a label like warp, no matter how much money they make (i'm pretty certain maximo park is the best selling act on warp right now). ok, maybe i am a little snobby here. ;)
but if i wasn't open minded about music, i would not have voted Sufjan Stevens and Kanye West as my favourite albums of 2005....

btw, i have seen Maximo Park live twice last year and i still think they're shite. :)

i have to agree with the eik on this one...i personally like and collect a couple of labels, and would feel the same if they started promoting 'dodgy' teen friendly bands just to make a fast buck...not that JBO will do that eh Steve ;)

it IS snobby but so what... and its not to say i don't like teen friendly music...i love Kylie for example, (and that includes her music)...and i can appreciate some of the more 'teen friendly' chart acts, but if my 'fav' labels started compromising their original ideals i'd feel kinda let down...no doubt though i'd still buy it... :(

however, i've only heard one Maximo Park track and didn't even know they were on warp and am now shocked to hear they are!!!....but i'd say it was a long way away from the warp i remember, Forgemasters, Sweet Exorcist and LFO...bleep

tbh 0 I can't really comment on this list even though i submitted my votes...despite reading this forum regularly, I don't really know that much about the music being made today (i.e. in this list), i'm a bit out of the loop, and prefer the old days...i have enough music here already, to start opening new doors... :p - I think my only vote in the top 50 was Deep Dish - George is On

but one thing i do know - Coldplay are shite

i would not even go that far and say that they signed them only in order to make some quick cash. after all, maximo park had never put out a record before, so maybe even Warp was surprised by their success.

i don't care about teen friendly bands either (i mean, Maximo Park aren't the new backstreet boys or so), but i care about the music one of my favourite labels is releasing, especially when it came such a long way like Warp, as you say.

goldfrapp - excellent album and probably the one madonna wanted to make, on second thought maybe not, because madonna wanted price to make a shamelessly full on disco album, and goldfrapp had a different idea. an idea... that was ultimately as tepid and spotty as the meadonna album.

the doves - [s]another great album, not in my top 10 for the year but only because there were so many great albums this year[/s] yawn-a-thon.

so, what exactly was your evidence..? :p

my evidence is that you need an editor ;)

There far from a band marketted to teens, just a band that teens seem to like with a sudden surge in indie stuff being quite populat at the moment.I've seen them 14 times since they played tiny little clubs and i still like em, but they do need to piss off for a bit as they'll end up like the killers and bore people silly.

Tis a good thing for Warp to sign different stuff and as allready mentioned, lets them sign more electronic stuff from MP's success. Got no idea how much they cost to sign, but Battles who signed to Warp must have been a fair wack.

btw, i must have a) missed your thread or b) the band was unknown to me then. still, one of the best rap albums out there last year.
