Hello, sorry for the lack of response from me, I was kinda busy and lately.

I think it would be a good idea to put all the tracks that we have now, online. That would mean mine is not included though, I'm just not happy with the way it is now. I will try to finish it as soon as possible and upload it later on.

so, who is in charge of actually putting stuff online? Who does the hosting?

*edit* had to read back a few pages but it looks like Maus is "in charge" of hosting. Sean posted some good suggestions for domain names, although frankly I don't really care what it's called. Would be nice to have a nice looking page where people can get all the info. Maus are you doing that as well? Do you have all the info and tracks? If not you should contact Leon so he can send it trough to you.
Let's get this thing on the road again :)

i just PM'ed Maus, though he hasn't posted anywhere around here since 10/23. Hope he's online soon and this gets rolling!

EDIT: emailed him, too...probably more efficient!

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

ok i've had word from Maus, and he's gonna start working on the page. We could still use some suggestions for the domain, and he suggested choosing something we could re-use for future installments. So maybe something like darktraintunes.org, dirtymusic.org or dirtycomp.org or whatever. Personally I like www.darkanddirty.org
we could make a poll out of it if neccesary :)

perhaps it would be best if everyone re-sent/uploaded their track to Maus this time so he has all the stuff he need to make the page.

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

i also like the "darktraintunes" idea, for reuseability.
But if we need to get "dirty" in there somewhere (and we probably should, right? ;) ), maybe "dirtydarktraintunes", if that's not too long. i think it should at least allude to music. "darkandirtymusic" could work. Too many years of self-consciousness being on "dirty.org" makes me wary of a site just called dark and dirty:p Could be all sorts of things!

That's a hard one. I'm doubting between "Dreamgirl" and"Les temps legers". If you like you can hear them here

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

Well, I'm liking both of them, but I think Dreamgirl has the edge... Maybe we should see how close we are to 74 minutes? I would be a shame to cut good tracks off if there's room for them.

Looks like Leon is gonna send what he's got to Maus this weekend.

I agree, let's see how long they all run. Or, maybe one of your tracks fits better or stands out more with the other submissions?

We'l need to decide on the track order, and i'll send the artwork to you also, Maus.

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

i am alive!

sorry for not stopping in to say hello, work was a bit hectic the last few weeks, but i've been cranking on a site for all this themed around the "dreamgirl, i'm desperate for you" title - which i assume is what we're still calling this? i frickin' hope so 'cause i've been bashing my head against tables all day.

i noticed a few folks worried about the 74-minute mark... are we aiming to put this on a CD? i, for one, think we should break out of that mindset altogether as it's kind of an antiquated notion (rumour actually has it that there will be no more CDs produced by the major labels here in LA after xmas this year...)

that way we don't have to worry about total project length...

forgive me if i'm re-hashing stuff that's already been discussed... didn't have time to read through the whole thread here, just wanted to stop in.

anyways, looking forward to the finished product.

guess i'd better finish up my track, eh?

love,
c

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

I agree about the cd-format thing, although I can imagine some people would want to be able to burn a cd to play in the car or something. But let's worry about this when we know the total running time of all the tracks sent so far.

as far as domainname goes, I think it's up between darkandirtymusic or darktraintunes...

the comp name/theme is still dreamgirl, I'm desperate for you.

Looks great.

Ok, I have sent all the files I have to Chris. That means:

AViD
Cranks
Grandbrother
LX Nen (although I did not receive a bio and pic from you)
Sputnikk
The Night Owl
Tin Foil Hats

I have also included my own track, even though it's not finished. I decided it's good to get some feedback instead of me being the only one to hear it all the time. It's called A Gator Got Her - Involuntary Dub.

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

okay folks.

i hope y'all like this 'cause i've spent far too much time on it.

haven't incorporated the cd cover yet... probably have to re-visit that, but i figured we're still missing some bios and photos, and some tracks might not be right, so everythings modifiable.

i went with this domain... seemed a good compromise of what everyone was thinking:

http://www.darksounds.org/

it's possible that the domain name hasn't propagated around the planet just yet, so some of you might get 404s or domain not found business for the next few hours.

oh... and the .zip of all the tracks is still uploading... it'll take about 30 more minutes.

cheers,
c

It looks great Holden. If I could make one suggestion, have you tried bumping up the contrast a little bit on the overall design? It just looks a little washed out to me, like the darks could stand to be darker. Feel free to tell me to screw off obviously, but I figured I'd throw it out there. And please don't let it overshadow the fact that I think it's looking fantastic, and that I appreciate the work you're doing on it. Thanks! :)

glad everyone seems to like it!

one other thought i had... if each of the artists can email me (or PM me although i'm bad about checking those) a contact address or URL (or both) i can include artist contact info on each artist page (or perhaps contact info there, and a link to your URL in the 'links' section).

that way rick rubin or jimmy iovine can contact us all directly to give us major recording contracts. ;)

awesome work all around. brian's artwork to be attached shortly, and i need the lucid rhythms track to complete the site.

rock on,
c

Dr. Processor is actually our very own Professor a.k.a Marshall Watson :) He e-mailed me personally about joining the compilation, and I kinda interpretted that as him wanting to keep it a secret/surprise. Now I just realized, he probably just lost his account here on dirty, as he hasn't been posting lately, either.

Carp Dreamer didn't send his track to me, so I don't know where he's at.

My picture, bio and contact information will be sent to Maus as soon as possible. Note that my track is only like, 70 % done, but I thought it would be a good idea to get some feedback from you guys.

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

i just wanted to say, from the first listen, in just alpha-order by artist, this is such an enjoyable, well-paced eclectic mix! I'm going to have this on replay for quite a while!
i know we are getting a track from Luminary and maybe a few more additions, but in the meantime, some comments (all positive!)

"Involuntary Dub" - A Gator Got Her - nice, relaxed tempo dub track to start the comp. There're so many surprises buried in the background, minimal but effective sounds upfront. Very smooth!

"Sidewalk Dramas" - AViD - what can i say, i apologize, esp for my "singing". it is what it is, and i hope you enjoyed the switch from guitar-driven to heavy breaks/electro in the middle, and back. This has been my "born slippy" for 5 years.

"A Whisper, A Glance" - Cranks: nice build from just the bass and beat to a very epic track! The octave-up pattern remains and there are just so many hooks, it's immediately catchy!

"V2/The dumbest thing i ever heard a smart girl say" -Dr. Processor. Well, if it isn't our old friend, the Professor Marshall Watson! As always with his tunes, the glitchy beats mix with the warm organic sounding pads and sonic experiments to immerse you in his musical world.

"Midnight Dub" - Grandbrother/feat. Janie - such a sleek, sexy chilled track! It's nice to hear a female vocal on this compilation in honor of the dreamgirls! very well produced and this could/should be on any number of Chill/House collections.

"DGL" - Lx Nen - this one tackes me on a journey. So many lovely loops (the piano, the pads) and a great drum pattern, it just keps evolving and i keep hitting repeat! Well done!

Island Hopping" - Maus. i already told this to Maus, but in addition to being a swell webhoster, he makes awesome tunes! This one seems like "In Sides" - era orbital: a bit aggro, very epic, but with cutting-edge beats.

"Firefly" - Sputnikk: i've been enjoying your tunes for 3 or 4 years, and they just get better and better! This one builds so steadily and drives without crashing around. It's stellar! i like the simple intro and outtro, too...a sonic firefly in my earphones!

"Weekend Cute" - the Night Owl: Short, but very sweet. Every element is added at exactly the right place, and the warmth of the synths offset by the fenetic hi-hat pattern makes for a lovely 2 minutes, leaving me wanting more!

"Dreamgirl..." - Tin Foil Hats: what a fun trak to finish with! This is the sound of the future by way of the 80's: analog bloopy goodness and that great vocoded robot-in-love!

Everyone, great efforts! No weak tracks at all (well, maybe that AViD sillyness, but every comp. has the dud that makes the rest sound even better! Thanks for letting me sit in with you professionals). Surely a lot of effort went into this and it shows.

Now, Everyone download!

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

Loving every minute of it, what a lot of talented people we have round here.

I've mailed off my pic and bio (at last), so I'm done :-)

So, I think it's just a matter of rounding up any stray tracks and we're good to go... maybe some sort of announcement to the rest of the board when that this thread has turned into a album and website would be in order? I imagine a lot of non-music-making dirts haven't been following this thread but would love to hear the results.

Oh, and while I remember, I think the ID3 tags on the download could do with some tidying up, so they all have title/artist/album in the same format.

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

Thanks Holden, nice read :)

Funny as it sounds, I have had most of the tunes on my computer for a while, but hadn't listened to them yet. I have just started listening to them, and these are my first (short impressions):

A Gator Got Her - Involuntary Dub: (My own track) A lot needs to be done on this track. some live mixing, some change in arrangements etc. Any feedback on this track is more than welcome!

AViD - Sidewalk Drama's: I love the lo-fi production, although, to my idea, you COULD try and make this a 3 or 4 minute version and make it REALLY booming. The length of the track now makes it lose concentration sometimes. Have to get used to the vocals a bit, but the transition in the middle of the song is awesome. Overall very nice. the lo-fi production is great.

Cranks - A Whisper, A Glance: Reminds me of Autechre, which is great. Although the melodies haven't grabbed me yet, but it's my first listen.

Dr. Processor - The Dumbest Thing I Heard A Smart Girl Say: Love the overall vibe of this track. pure bliss.

Grandbrother - Midnight Dub (Feat. Janie H.): Great production, this could be on a Kruder & Dorfmeister album :)

LX Nen - DGL: At the moment the most interesting track on this compilation. Really nice build up, great sounds in there.

Maus - Island Hopping: Here's another very interesting track. Beats are menacing and the music indeed reminds me of In Sides by Orbital (which is great because I love In Sides). Reminds me to check out your other stuff :p

Sputnikk - Firefly: Hmmm the bassline gives me visions of a big dancing crowd. This is a lush techno track.

The Night Owl - Weekend Cute: Sweet, should have been longer though!

Tin Foil Hats - Dreamgirl...: Damn, I love this track. starts out kinda "basic, then turns into a great oldskool electro thing. I LOVE the robotic vocals!

holden 11-20-2007 12:41 PM

Re: Dirty producers: Song/remix compilation

Okay, the artwork is updated, including luminary's forthcoming track... i just put everyone in alphabetical order, as that's how it is on the darkmusic site and imho, it sounds great in that way!
i think i have everyone spelled correctly (catch mistakes, please) and i punched up the contrast, as recommended! ;)
