Nah, i don't hate PD. My comment was that imho, while themes and call-backs are fine, it doesn't work well to include almost the same set of lyrics twice on an album. After hearing Push Upstairs, PD comes off as sounding like a remix or like there was a scarcity of ideas. On its own, it's quite nice. I wasn't too keen on SLaM for a long while until i forced myself to remix it (back in the 2003 dirty remix competition) and got interested in the bassline and female vocal clips. Still, neither are my fave.

Think the point here is, pretty much every album has that one song (or occasionally more) that doesn't resonate with you and we'd rather replace with a B side or different version. I like seeing other people's lists of ideal tracks, because changing the order or tunes can really affect the mood of an album. Like Pete Tong said (for what its worth): "Underworld really is an albums band". He's actually kinda right!

I wasn't really keeping up with the Underworld internet community at the time, but I seem to remember talk of a similar argument to "Please Help Me" vs. "Push Downstairs" -taking place over STITI and concerning "Rowla" vs. "Cherry Pie."

It'd be fun to go back to the beginning and plug in your favorite b-sides in place of dubious album tracks, assuming they worked in terms of time. Although I suspect that's probably been done before on a board this hardcore.

Thats a really good idea. There are on average 2 songs per album that I skip/dislike/am-indifferent-to that have same-era B-sides that I love.

Edit: wow, thats a lot of hyphens.

i was just thinking about how nice it was back in the late 90's when someone asked me for an Underworld mix tape. The hardest part was deciding which version of .Nuxx to include on the 60min or 70min cassette: the obvious choice was .Nuxx with the full outro becuase it took up more time. Heck, back then it was 2 LPs, 2 EPs and one single to work with.
