On a lighter note, I suggest you watch Spinal Tap again, as the parody stretches across many genres. |

Re: Underworld and Prog Bands
i am pretty sure that karl himself has mentioned about how they feel highly influenced by bands such as floyd and can and definatly brian eno. i´m sure someone will have a good memory and know for sure, but it is something that i think they have said.
and this is rediculous. like a facist thread if i have seen one ever! |

Hehe. Seriously though, we shouldn't blur the lines between Stimpee the Moderator and Stimpee the Person. (Even if I deliberately chose to earlier :p). He is expressing a personal view here, however unreasonable that might be! I don't think that means he is stamping his Moderator Jackboot on anyone though. ;) |

they may have been rock for a long time; but they got prog. as stimps points out - stonehenge was a concept album and tour; you don't get more prog than concept albums...;) |

Underworld (well, mk II and on, anyway) have been about doing their own thing, using elements of different musical styles to new effect. Their ties to art, conceptual themes, and musical exploration are much more than the average band. To me, that makes them "progressive". If Prog rock in general makes you cringe, then perhaps you are only thinking of it at its worst and most overblown. That was not always the case...The music was, in it's day, very cutting edge, totally unlike what was happening in rock and pop. Like it or not, it has its place as a movement and many modern acts owe much to the genre (from space rock to shoegaze to IDM). I don't think it's at all sullying the name of UW to call them progressive, because they DO share traits with that movement. The first time i heard "Stagger", it reminded me of some old King Crimson track. Certainly, they have been an electronic dance band for some time, and that's where their bread and butter is, how they ultimately are labeled and regarded, etc. But simple reasons such as their willingness to experiment with long musical movements, release incredible ambient and challenging music, create whole atmospheres with word/sound/performance/art, well, that's a step ahead of most acts today...Moving forward; advancing. Progressive. :) holden |

Re: Underworld and Prog Bands
i lost my humour with this thread pages ago! Thanks for the clarification, though...can't say i've followed the Tap's career:rolleyes:
Since i was a kid, i've been "that guy" defending bands i liked and felt were more musically developed than the top 40 poop everyone else was heralding. Guess i'm still at it:o |
