Beautiful images (photographic essay by Rick Smith) to be downloaded today in uwlive site (hi-res in the member section, low-res direct from the home page). Very nice, specially for technical objects photography lovers... ;)

His photographic skills are awesome. I'm wondering though who takes the photos on the daily photo journal on uwlive?

karl does the cellphone/everyday fun project idea stuff

looks like rick has the stationary-nice-lens/hi-rez end.

he mentioned it on an update once.

nice set, i love the presentation. although the thing about highlighting an exact, precise machine that complex and specially geared is that perhaps the photos should reflect that by being as precise as the machine itself.
a few of them seem a little blurred/dont have a clear focus.

just sayin'

It's called depth of field, and I think the photos are very nice.

it's called your mom
and i know what depth of field is.
maybe i put it nicely when i said a few of them lack a clear focus
i guess i meant to say that there's no focus at all in some of these. as in even where the focal point is, it's not as sharp as it should be. because it's blurred.
k? now unless i need glasses you can cut the condescension.

anyway, karl offhandedly asked for music rec's

jeez, chill out. I honestly didn't know if you knew or not, hence the Wikipedia link. Which ones in particular have no focus at all? I only gave it a cursory glance, but I thought every photo had a point of focus.

Edit: So I got home and blew up the high-rez PDF on my 30-inch monitor. Every page except page "05" (page 6 of the PDF) has a well-defined focus subject. On page "05" the field of focus seems to be in the middle of the cylinder as you can see the left side of the cylinder in focus as it curves around. I don't know if that was an artistic choice, but all the photos aside from that one seem fine to me.

it really is hardly off, and in an effort to make a statement i probably overdid it, but in comparison to the clarity of 06 and 09, it's 01, 05, 08, and 04 which dont *quite* crystallize as well.

dammit, cant i even just make a passing mention without turning into an asshole, YOU MAKE ME DO THIS
