Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Red Rocks Sucks. The walk from the parking lot to the seating is like climbing Everest, it always rains, the wind blows 120 miles per hour, there's always some guy who pukes behind you and runs down on your seat, the high altitude makes the performers too tired to put on a good show, there's too many hippies from Boulder, and you always get pulled over on the way home. I'm glad they moved the show.... ;)

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
it's a great shame when things like this happen but the bottom line is that the promoter is responsible.
In theory anyone can be a promoter. You can ring up a band's manager and say "I want Underworld to play at the Hollywood Bowl on 25th May 2009. How much?" The manager would see if the band were interested ("wow, the Hollywood bowl eh - that's fantastic") and if so they'd come back with a price. Let's say $60k to cover their time, travel, crew etc The promoter would then ring the Hollywood Bowl and say "I need to hire the venue on 25th May 2009. How much?" "That'll be $300,000" They've then got to do the math (18000 capacity @ $30 a ticket = $540,000 less $300,000 and $60,000) "Awesome", he thinks, I can make $180,000 on a gig. Of course he has to actually 'promote' it and some inexperienced or greedy promoters might think "Fuck it, I'll do 95% of it via the fan base - viral marketing is cheap and effective enough. Then I'll spend $50k on some other bits and I'll still walk away with $120-$130k." As the date looms the band will be asking "How's ticket sales?" thinking that everything is in hand. The promoter's reply will be "Great" (largely because all promoters only talk in superlatives and only tell people what they want to hear), so the band will be totally in the dark until the 11th hour when the promoter does the math again and realises "Holy shit, i've only sold 4000 tickets" So that's overheads of $360,00 + inadequate marketing of $50k = $410,000 Less the sales of 4000 tickets @ $30 = $120,000 Leaving a grand loss of $290,000 "Oh shit" cue call to band management to say "Huston we have a problem" This stuff always happens at the 11th hour and the band will be incredibly pissed-off about the whole affair and as such the chances of working with/for that promoter again will be somewhere between nil and zero because not only has the promoter proved themelves inept, they've also pissed-off the one thing that's most valuable to any band - their fans. The promoter, having been given a rocket up his ass, would run round like a headless chicken and find an alternative venue with lower overheads and a smaller capacity and will offer the band an alternative (say, The House Of Blues). The band, seeing a way of not letting down their fans will decide to go with it and try and make the best of a bad job - after all they've planned to be in this area anyway. Afterwards, if the promoter has any decency, he'll skulk off to work in a burger bar. Otherwise, he'll probably set up a record company ;) |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
i am so sorry to all those who wanted to see UW at Red Rocks, i really am, but i am pleased UW decied to relocate... it was obviously a big last minute decision to make, but most probably the right one in the light of day....
there are several issues here... but simply the main one is that Underworld are, imo, no longer big enough to play these types of venues in the USA. I appreciate that there are thousands of UW fans out there and in the US, but i think a band that has not released any new /mainstream material in 5 years would struggle to fill a venue like Red Rocks now... (maybe after the new album drops, but before...mmm) Underworld are still pretty large and influential in Europe, but even then i think they would stuggle to headline a number of large venues, even in this country... they sell out over here mainly because the venues they take on are small intermate and, again imo, better suited to the UW set up. i just wonder if their stock in the US has fallen - the hard core fans will always show up, and it must have been those who bought the tix, but the harsh reality of it is, is that Underworld are just not that big a draw in the USA... i know the guys in the US will state that there are plenty of fans, but thats simply not the case... otherwise this event would be on (ie. sold out) ... logistically it costs a great deal to tour the US, and I know Underworld will themselves personally be pissed off by this i'm not blaming anyone except the promoters, but i think the last time UW played in the US they were a bigger proposition and more popular than they are now... its sad, but i think probably the truth, especially where the US is concerned (note: i base none of this on actual fact, but speculation and the reality that they have not sold enough tickets for this one event) i'm glad you guys are getting to see one of the best bands of the 90's still touring, so wherever they play enjoy it... its a long way to come and play, and they love you - so don't hate, you know you love them still - its just the fickle fans from years back who've lost the love that have caused this set back. |

UW are probably less popular in certain parts of this country (the UK) and parts of Europe too, than others.... i just wonder though, if their popularity has wained since the last tour... they have been, to quote a well know track, 'underneath the radar' of a lot of people for quite a while now... i certainly wish they do well in the US, and the HW Bowl show looked rammed so, who knows, i probably don't!!! i just hope the Denver issue doesn't blight the tour experience... |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
number of shows in america in last ten years vs. size of america
number of shows in europe in last ten years vs. size of europe it's clear why they're more popular in europe. i'll say it again though, i'm happy to see them in a half full club. incredible opportunity not many fans get to see. |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
I sincerely hope that the gig at Fillmore will be the best Underworld gig of any tour in the known universe to make it up to you guys - and I am 100% sure that Rick, Karl and Darren will be gutted by this and will do the best job in the world to make sure that you all have a fantastic time.
Shaney: Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, darling. Please rethink your decision, as you may live to regret giving up this opportunity of seeing them live. I know how long you have waited for this, and I know how much it meant to you. Don't decide on the back of all the frustration, anger and disappointment you must be feeling right now (and rightfully so). Give it another day to mull it over. Who knows when they will be back your side of the pond? :( |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Well, it's not like Red Rocks doesn't get packed for electronic acts. Daft Punk and Global Dance Festival were packed back in July. I don't know what happened here with Underworld. The promotion failed at some level, but I'm still glad they're putting on a show.

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
I only ask for one thing:
DIRTY EPIC LIVE PLEASE!!! I would probably break down in tears to hear this song live (hell, I'm listening to it now) :) |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium

AMEN! Dirty Epic Live is worth the price of the ticket, regardless of where they are playing. Does anybody know about an after party in Denver? |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium

How 'bout that after party??? :D |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Denver, nor Phoenix(it's a bit culture shocking considering the populations of both), are not very "after party" towns.
Considering it's Tuesday, your best bet is have a 'dirty' after party gathering. |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
I have a feeling this show might be something special. Honestly, UW is the most grateful to their fans of any band i know. How many "thank you's" have i read on uwlive.com over the years... So many i can't even remember. So if you're going to Fillmore, keep positive vibes in the air. Who knows, you may be in for a treat.

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
OMG!!! That was the show of a lifetime! I can die now. :D
But not before I wear out my free copy of Oblivion With Bells! |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Wow, really cool show. Yeah Karl said we'd all be getting a free copy of OwB due to the fiasco of moving the show from Red Rocks.
Not exactly sure of the exact setlist, but basically this was it: Dirty Epic Crocodile Dark Train Beautiful Burnout Rez/Cowgirl New song? (Karl on guitar) Two Months Off Spikee Born slippy King of Snake Pearls Girl Moaner Encore: Jumbo Somone else might be more accurate, I don't think I missed any though. It's late, I'm tired. But the show rocked, the crowd loved Rez/Cowgirl (as expected). |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
absolutely amazing show. Karl was really going for it. Touching moment in the beginning when rick and karl embraced before the show. Crowd down front was great. Everyone loving it and going mental. Oh my god what an amazing day!
To top it off, I met rick and karl outside the Fillmore today. http://uwlive.groups.vox.com |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
That's so awesome of the band to repay the fans for something that wasn't even their fault to begin with. They just went up yet another notch in my book, good show R+K!
|
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
That show was awesome. Couldn't ask for anything better from anyone involved. The ticket folks were kind enough to let me exchange my tickets for the much less expensive Chemical Bros/Underworld combo ticket, the band made it right with their album gift, and above all, the show was absolutely incredible!!
What was that song (I think after Rez/Cowgirl) with Karl on the guitar? That was a really great sound, kind of reminded me of the music in the movie 28 Days Later - I half expected zombies to be on the big screen behind the band! That was a really great song - I hope it is on Obilivion With Bells... if not, they should put it on an EP or something. Moaner wasn't the smoothest, but it happens, and they pulled it off. I'd chalk it up to the altitude - the lack of oxygen :) Fucking amazing show. Would have been a perfect day for Red Rocks, but we definitely wouldn't have had the same sound and the same energy in the croud. Great crowd, great sound, really worth the wait and initial disappointment of the venue change. I hope they come back here again. |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
That'll be Glam Bucket of the new cd
Moaner has to be ugly, dark, raw, mean.... that's how I like it live. 013 tilburg 2005, show1, that was the best ever version I did hear live. So dark it was black. |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
lucky mountaineers you. you got Dark Train and Pearl's Girl. noice.
what's Shake that Higher btw? |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
and dirty epic... didn't someone request that one earlier in this thread to compensate for their ddisapointment?

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Oh man. I am so pleased for everyone after the downer at the beginning of the week! From the pix, looks like it was a great show. And what a truly lovely gesture to the US fans to do a special limited offer. These guys are awesome. :D

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
best show of the tour so far, imo.. absolutely awesome :)
sitting at the denver airport now.. exhausted. pics and vids will be uploaded as soon i get settled in NYC. bring on central park!!!! - dc |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
What an incredible show! I'm back in Tacoma exactly 26 hours after I left and I STILL feel the beauty of Glam Buckut all over me!
What a treat the boys gave us. Hearing Dirty Epic, Dark Train, Spikee for the first time live would be enough but nay! We were gifted with Karl's guitar and Rick's unleashed passion during G.B....AND given a copy of the new album?!? THANK YOU SO MUCH!! On a very personal note: I used the opportunity of this show to propose to my girlfriend during Born Slippy and she said yes! I introduced her to the band when we first met so UW have been a constant part of our relationship. The boys may as well have been around to witness the next step, eh? :) We met folks from Portland, L.A., and Atlanta, and a few that we know from here. EVERYONE had a great time. Epic is an understatement for this show!!! |

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
Such an incredible party, and easily the single best event I have ever witnessed. The energy Karl brought to the whole show, plus the connection that was clear multiple times throughout the show between the three was incredible. Rick losing it during Glam Bucket was great, and hilarious when he stopped Karl singing during Born Slippy. It was nice to see Dark Train and Pearl's Girl brought out for the tour.
All in all I had a great time, and it's very nice of the boys to deliver the album to us as compensation. Still in Denver until I return to Seattle tomorrow, so I wont have my photos and videos until then. ________ Vaporizer |
Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
now, are they mailing the CDs to you, and how? are they going to get the home addresses from the promoters that sold the tickets? - or did they just give the CDs out at the show?

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
It was the best thing in the world ever, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. I rocked out near the front with some friends who were just as into it as I was. Loved it. I really hope they post this performance on their website sometime. Apart from the one blip with Karl singing, it was perfect.

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
What a fantastic show! High energy all the way through- and a great set list. Watching the crew struggle with the big inflatable phallic symbols was hillarious. The crowd was awesome- full of energy, courteous, and a lot of fun. Thanks to UW for a great night. My wife can't stop talking about it!

Re: Denver show now at the Fillmore Auditorium
O
M G BEST SHOW EVAR! Many of you have heard me rant about never seeing UW live. That has finally changed! So amazing! Great energy, awesome songs, the stage show was bloody terrific, Karl's energy, and the playfulness of all of them on stage... just so good! Offering us all free copies of the new disc - how much cooler does it get? Got myself an OWB shirt, loving it, just loving everything. I only wish I could re-live this moment, and that I'd gotten to meet the guys - but I also hope that I can interview them for my electronic music documentary that I'm doing at some point here, so maybe I can still make that dream happen :) "Beautiful Burnout" was SO AMAZING live. Finally I have this to say: THEY OPENED WITH DIRTY EPIC!! My favorite song!! I know it's cheesey for me to say, but when that moment happened, for me, my first time seeing the band who is #1 on my list in so many ways, playing my favorite song, I just can't tell you how I felt. It was as if it was, in some small way, just for me. THANK YOU RICK, PRICEY AND KARL! You guys made my year! |
