is it just me, or is that short bridge around 2 minutes very "windowlicker"-esque? also, the main synths remind me of something....but it is rather catchy. much better than that escape mediocracy one.....

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

bas i am, i hear you - at 3 minutes, the radio edit of this is pretty tame. But i'm holding out for the LP version, and hoping also that the tracks are mixed - that makes it more epic imho,...think EPD and DYOH or the first half of Fluke's "Puppy". Whether intentional or not, a nice mix keeps the vibe high.

I'm also pretty psyched that people are still talking about the Chems 15 years after their debut. I have certain strong feelings associated with their albums, and while they may have faltered in quality lately, i stil have all the LPs, singles, EPs, sticker on my car bumper, etc. Unless "Further" is a total trainwreck, which i doubt, the Brothers will still be in my top 10 favorite bands...like them or not, there's always something interesting to hear in their tracks.

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

ok, for what it's worth/not worth, i read that "Further" is entirely instrumental. With the LP versions of "escape velocity' and "swooon" being longer than these radio edits, what do you suppose of a fully mixed, psychododelic concept album from the Chems? i could dig it for sure!

Even though i consider "Come With Us" (2002) to be their last great album, they've still had moments of genuine creativity amongst the sap and rap of the last two records. I hope they've realized with "Further" that they have their own sound and no amount of indie/hiphop guest vocalists will add to the album, just do it as they'd done in the 90's/early '00's - keep it heavy and keep it swirling!

I've been hoping they would release a live cd and I think now would be a great time for it. The closest thing I have to that in terms of quality is their 2005 Coachella gig.

Eik, I totally hear the Windowlicker vibe. Good call. Great track tho. I'm very eager to hear more now.

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

Windowlicker? Yeah, maybe for those few bars - of course, on the LP version, that could be substantial.

Still. I'm liking the prospects. I've been at the record store for every Chemical Brothers release and though all but the first two have met me with some surprises, i've always had the same eager anticipation and similar multiple plays, letting it sink in.

For example, "hey boy hey girl" and "It began in Afrika" didn't do much for me as promo singles, but on the records, they were just fine, amazing, even!

\
i have a good feeling for "Further"

Also, I thought it was pretty wild that "Wonders of the Deep" has been played live (as an intro) since at least 2005. Sounds fucking great too like their old album ending epics of the first couple of albums:

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

thanks, Mongoose, for the link.

it's hard to get a feel for this track in 2 minutes or so - yes, it definitely has the possibility of growing into an epic album closer, and i hope that whatever song makes the cut is indeed epic! At any rate, it's cool to know that the Chems have been tinkering with tracks for several years, just like our beloved Underworld. The Brothers are often slagged off as cheesy dance or populist electro, but i'm recalling interviews in the keyboard and remixing spheres where Tom & Ed admitted to being very much the eggheads and perfectionists when it came to producing sounds.
I never felt that they were "dullard geniouses" or disposable, but rather were really electro geniouses who sometimes fell victim to the demands of a fickle public who wanted more guest vocalists and streamlined beats/melodies.

UK dirts:

"Free Chemical Brothers CD

To get you ready for more of their block rockin beats, we’re giving you an exclusive 10-track CD handpicked by the band – including ‘Swoon’, a brand new track from the new album ‘Further’. Get yours free only in The Sunday Times this weekend."

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

Yeah, fine, the Uk'ers get a free Cd with "Swoon" and previously released material - a good cross-section of their catalog, but by no means their best.

Oh, but June's official release can't come soon enough! I'm more excited for this release than for the past two.

In 1998, i arrived late to the party and bought "Dig Your Own Hole". It was awesome, so i soon got "Exit Planet Dust". It scored my summer.

In 1999, i hoped for the best and "surrender" happened. It was different, but in retrospect, it was genius. More integrated, more pastoral, still rocking in spots.

In 2001/02, "it began in africa" announced tbe arrival of a new LP, and it was not to disappoint. Gone were most block-rockin' beats, but the album fit the CB mold of guest vocalists and psychodelic-electro. It was relentless.

In 2003, we got Singles. Nothing really exciting but a few more collabs - with "get Yourself High: we had an awesome video. With "Golden Path" we got a Flaming Lips reject/CB's b-side and harbinger of collabs to come.

In 2005, "Push the Button" appeared...i was none too enthused by Q-Tip, Bloc party or any of the collaborations. Sure, "Believe" and "Surface to Air" are classics, as are a few other cuts, but this was the first Chems record i sort of skipped through.'

2007 - "We Are the Night" - ooh, i tried hard to like this one, buying it the first day, as i had the previous couple LPs, and playing it over and over. Yes, there are a few ok tracks that remind me of the experiences i had around that time (hot summer ,moving homes), but mostly, i can't stand "salmon dance" and "battle scars" - other tracks like "modern midnight coversation" are just embarassing. i like the liv easpect to the title track, but mostly this feels like the CB's backing up the flavor of the month

2010: Escape Velocity and Swoon - while by no means my favorite Chemicals tracks ever, i've learned to love a lot of promo singles that didn't impress on first blush (e.g. "Hey Boy Hey Girl"; "It Began In Africa"). And the hope that there won't be guest vocals, or at the very least it will be a continous mix/instrumental/psychodelic really gets me ready!!

You can preview each track on the album: http://ie.7digital.com/artists/the-c...thers/further/

Horse Power sounds intense; it's become my most anticipated track on the album. I'm a bit disappointed with the overall time on the record though. 8 tracks to make a total time of 51:54. I feel like they should have thrown in 2 more tracks...but maybe they feel this record shouldn't contain any filler.

ok, i didn't really listen too much to these samples, because i sort of want to be surprised when i get the LP, but through the samples i have heard, "Further" sounds like a very psychodelic album.
I can hear bits of classic Chems album cuts like "Sunshine Underground", "Hoops", "Signal to Air", etc.
Bring it on.

Amazon has previews to the tracks as well but they are at different parts of the songs. It seems like the ones on Amazon are recordings from the beginning-ish of each song: http://www.amazon.de/Further/dp/B003...5410927&sr=8-2

I'm surprised by the drums in k+d+b; very very cool.

So I've got the promo to review and from the first listen, it's a brilliant return to form. Wish there were a few extra tracks or they were stretched out a bit, but sounding just like Dig Ya Own Hole/Surrender which to me is not a bad thing.

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

This album is amazing from start to finish, and a return back to what was great about the Chem Bros from the beginning. Very psychedelic and free flowing lp that's heavy on the ears in all the right ways. Trippy as all hell when combined with Winamp's full screen visualizations. Take your drug(s) of choice and drop out maaaan.

Current fav tracks on the cd (other than 'Swoon' or 'Escape Velocity'):
Dissolve
Horse Power
Wonders of the Deep

I agree with you guys; from the first listen, I admit it's an amazing album. You can hear some of their signature samples behind some songs. I'll need to listen to it again to wrap my head around it, but it's definitely a great album. I just wish it was longer.

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

This album is not too shabby...VERY good if you prefer the psychadelic side of them, which is what I love best about them. Beats can occasionally plod on a little too long and it can feel formulaic but it's really a grower. Some pieces of this are sheer heaven and the album is mixed together so there's good continuity between tracks. I'm glad they went away from the hip hop angle; it just never worked for them.

Can't wait to hear them open with "Wonders of the Deep" at the Bowl :)

On first listen... It sags a bit in the middle but otherwise is their best album in years and years. Since Surrender for sure.

Swoon is a bit Orbital, eh? (in a good way!)

I was on the fence about it, but after one listen through the album, definitely going to see them at the Hollywood Bowl in August.

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

I'm still praying they will tour the east coast this August (preferably the Florida region...seems like they only tour NY when it comes to the east coast). I was hoping to go to the Hollywood Bowl because I was going to be in the area, but I ended up going to Cali last month instead of this August. Did you guys score some good seats?

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

wow - this album is GREAT

I scored a promo leak of it a few days ago, then got the "Further - the Visual Experience" download today as a part of the iTunes pass

The idea of "no collaborations" is a bit misleading though... I originally thought that meant "no vocals" - which isn't true, it's just that they've gone back to using snippets of vocals instead of full "songs"

"K+d+b" took me by surprise, b/c it starts out so kraut-rocky then just builds and builds

...strangely though about the iTunes pass - you get the "Visual Experience" which is all the videos back-to-back. Then later you get each individual video (just seems like a lot of HD space)

//\/\/ 06-08-2010 12:15 PM

Is Tom the one that's singing on the majority of these songs? The voice is obviously distorted a bit, but it sounds good.

Fucking tight album, a real return to form for the Chems. This year's been great for electronic music, and here's yet another example.

Fighting download urge - gotta wait till the US release date in a week or so.

is it sad that i have bought the last 4 Chems albums the day they came out? That's how into them i was after "Exit Planet Dust" and "Dig Your Own Hole".

"Surrender" took quite a while to grow on me, as it was both more pastoral and more glossy than the sample-heavy big beat that preceeded it.

"Come With Us" (imho, their last great album) owned my stereo for weeks.

"Push the Button" and "We Are the Night" - they have their moments, but nothing that i really dig.

But i'm reallllly liking what i hear about/of this - return to form/by the numbers 90's era/ psychodelic, hatever - these are all good things after the crappy hip hop and flavor of the month collabs of the last two.

joethelion 06-11-2010 07:31 PM

Re: The Chemical Brothers - Further

I reconciled the whole "do I download" question by telling myself it was ok, b/c the entire video is already available on US iTunes

I agree about "Come With Us" - definitely their last 'great' album

I can never keep "Push the Button" and "We Are the Night" apart. I always confuse the two, b/c neither one of them had many tracks that really GRABBED me. That being said, I did like the Electronic Battle Weapons from that period... and the last track on "Push the Button"
