yea - I know what you mean

but expectations have gotten so high (for me at least) on this release, that they've pretty much 'topped-out'

like... it's been so long, I'm just glad that they were able to get something done!

Yeah, at least it's happening.. and Beth's album with Rustin Man was a great great album, so I think they might handle this.

If this one doesn't live up, it might be the preassure, and they go back in studio and make a fantastic album while no one is waiting for anything.. .

Re: Portishead - Third.

I stopped waiting for Portishead a looooooong time ago. I remember they had their first album out at basically the same time that Tricky released Maxinquaye, and they both used the same base sample in Glory Box and Hell is Round the Corner. Because of that, I kind of equated them and waited for the next album from both of them. I got Tricky's Pre-Millennium Tension.....and waited for Portishead's next album. Then got Tricky's "Nearly God" album....and waited for Portishead's. When Portishead finally released their second album, Tricky was about to put out his fourth, had released a bunch of EPs, and then had a fifth full length the next year. I had already given up at that point. Granted, Tricky had some ups and downs, but he was exploring ideas and growing. That's why Portishead's second disappointed me so much. I, and most of their musical peers, had moved on musically, while they, after years, were still doing the same thing. They went so directly from innovators to stagnant. Can you tell that they really hurt me? :(

Oh well, like I said before, hopefully their sound has finally evolved after 11 years since their last full length release.

well, as someone who came a little late to the party, i definitely think their self titled is a long distance away from their first album, and much much better too.

but i wasnt really expecting a third from them either, so i'm anticipating it, but my expectations as to how it'll sound are pretty neutral. i'm pretty sure it'll be at least good, if not worth listening to several several times.

i for one hope they wouldn't make the same album they made over 10 years ago, but that's just me. a little evolution anyone?

but i understand your doubts, which did happen with tricky for me. after listening to vulnerable i almost lost complete interest in tricky for a long time. the lyrics just reeked of teen agnst rock themes and the rhyme schemes were about on par with a 6 years olds. plus that new girl's contributions vocally and lyrically ruined it for me.

It's out there, still taking some time to take it all in, speechless in other words.

this album sucks. only people who weren't around for the release of Dummy think it's any good. the rest of us know it sucks.

Um, no.

I've had this album for a good few weeks now and I think it's very good and a lot better than I was expecting after such a long time.

I wasn't around for the release of Dummy but I love that album and I enjoy Portishead (the album) in some places. I've heard Third once and it didn't really invite me to listen to it more. It might be a grower though, so I guess I should take a moment and listen to it some more.
