Re: 12x12" More New Order...Vinyl exclusives...

the problem with new order, is that there have
been thoughts of this project before (recycled
was the name)..

but it became too elaborate, and getting
peter saville to coordinate it became very
difficult..

i think something will eventually emerge,
but 'new order' aren't exactly on the level
that 'depeche mode', 'u2', 'blondie', 'madonna'
and 'erasure' seem to still have...

i think in between the box set - retro, and
the new 2xcd -singles collection, and all
the other collections, such as 'substance',
and 'the best of', and 'the rest of', there's
plenty out there..

it's rather hard to get it all in one place,
and would probably be rather expensive..

i remember about 3 years ago, i was trying
to make a tracklist for all their singles, and
it came out to about 30 singles or so...

Depeche Mode and Erasure put out their versions of these sets like what, a decade ago?

true... it's absolute crap that there's not a definitive 12" Collection... sure there's Substance, but that wasn't really complete though

and in response to negative1 about:

-> I don't think it's necessarily about them being on the same level as those aforementioned bands, I mean even Duran Duran released two boxsets of all the singles... (although it frustraitingly didn't include stuff off of Medazzaland [which, btw - I just rediscovered... and it's really aged well... I just wish I had gotten ahold of its corresponding singles])

So - is it just that DD have a bigger fanbase / more rabid than NO? I really doubt that... especially as the bulk of the second boxset pretty much highlighted their 'not so good phase' (basically '86-'93 when 'the wedding album') came out...

but to get back on track -

I don't see why NO don't do what U2 did on iTunes, and release a massive 'boxset' of all the album tracks / bsides / remixes. I mean, that was pretty much complete - save for a few cover songs and alternate soundtrack versions... and that even came with a nice 'digital booklet' which contained all the covers as well as little bits talking about the tracks ...I think the Edge wrote them

...and I just want to make it clear - no I do not consider myself a 'big duran duran fan' - I just liked their 90's releases, and a couple of the older tracks

The Duran Duran boxsets were really good.

I wouldn't mind it they just had a b-side comp or at least a way to get MTO and some of the other stuff without having to pay for tracks you already own from the other comp cds. Also no edits like they had to do on Substance.

I wish Underworld would do that also.

Unfortunately for us hardcore U2 fans, it didn't serve too well for us to get that whole digital box set. I mean we would have been shelling out $125 for a couple of records. Who wants to do that?

Re: 12x12" More New Order...Vinyl exclusives...

actually $125 sounds pretty good if it really was that complete..

by the way i also have boxsets from:
the cure (4xcd rarities - excellent)
both the duran duran boxsets
simple minds box (5cd)
big country (4 separate boxsets)

and of course my pride and joy -
kraftwerk promo box set - 12345678 which doesnt have
any extras but it is remastered...

maybe releasing all the tracks on itunes is the way
to go...because at least that way the fans would
have access to some of tracks in one format for the
time being..

yea but that U2 box set was over 400 tracks... that's actually quite a bargan. Now sure, if you bought all the cdsingles when they were released; then I can see the 'value' go down a bit, but still it was nice to have all the vinyl tracks released digitally, there were also quite a few promo-only remixes, and - of course the unreleased demos/outtakes/alternate versions of tracks (I still can't believe that they didn't use the 'alternate' version of Yahweh instead of the album one)

the only thing that frustraited me was the fact that there weren't any outtakes from the Achtung -> Pop phase, but you can win them all, eh?

Re: 12x12" More New Order...Vinyl exclusives...

you have to look at the labels that these afore mentioned bands are on also...

Mute, in the case of DM & Erasure, Isalnd, in the case of U2, and Blondie (EMI) & Madonna (Sire) Duran (Capitol?)

all major labels with the bands interest at heart in the main...and good at knocking out sets for fans, and specifically for fans - especially in the case of Mute

New Order started out on factory, which we all know made no money whatsever, and even lost money while New Order were selling Blue Monday, it was a 'laugh' label, with Tony Wilson taking the piss whenever he could

then they got sold out to London, who basically thought of the best way to screw the fans by releasing so many greatest hits versions, its painful...they must have been rubbing their hands together at getting hold of all that New Order material

Now, i don't think NO themselves care for whats being released, because they don't really care for the way the label 'controls' their releases, when they had a say in Factory they did what they wanted and perhaps would have brought out an expensive box set that no one could have afforded...but now they just let the labels get on with it and fuck it up...

i don't think the fans would stomach another 'compilation' either, we have had our share to be honest...yes i would like a definitive version, but many people would baulk at paying x amount for it because they have almost everything on the various other things...

the best way would be to release everything digitally and let the fans buy what they need to complete their collections...

i mean, i hardly need Blue Monday again on another compilation, but if a complete set arrived it would be on there...but i'm sure that there are a few b'sides, odd remixes etc that i don't have and would be quite willing to pay to download...

Re: 12x12" More New Order...Vinyl exclusives...

i like what a lot of other groups have been doing:

pet shop boys - re-released albums + extra disc of tracks
abc - re-released albums+extra tracks
big country - re-released albums+extra tracks
echo and the bunnymen - re-released albums + extra tracks
simple minds - remastered albums-digipack/
some albums remastered for SACD/DVD-A

duran duran - remastered albums digipack

and more recently , 'the cure' -
re-released all the albums + extra disc of tracks

talking heads - massive box set, with all the
albums remastered + 5.1 surround sound versions of
albums + extra unreleased tracks

that would be the first step,
just to remaster the albums, and perhaps put some
extra tracks on them..if they were generous they
could use an extra disc....

of course like you said the label would have
to be behind it...i wonder if a box set (or
several of them) could be done for the
'pet shop boys'...i know they have a
large audience, but aren't they on the
'london' label also? i think there was a
box set for madonna that was huge,
(i think it was only the single versions
without remixes)...but i'm sure there
was an audience for it..

i also think there is a better market
for these specialty collections in asia,
and then europe and the US, so there
might be a better chance of it happening
in other countries..

pet shop boys are on the parlophone label...

there have been quite a few pet shop boys greatest hits efforts over the years, again some of which have been met with some derision...

but i like the idea of remastered albums with the outtakes, and bonus tracks added...the pet shop boys ones worked pretty well...and they have served their fans pretty well over the years...

to be honest the pet shop boys fan base, i would say is much larger than new orders, and possibly slightly younger still, and as such are more succeptable to buying nice packages...the older you get the less liable that you are to be duped into buying a rehashed old album

anyway, isn't there another new order album around the corner...can't see anything until thats out of the way...
